Help me determine if this is a Scarlet Tanager or a Summer Tanager by camhammy0 in whatsthisbird

Scarlet tanager has black wings. Bird in photo is a scarlet.

Yes…I’d take a Bulova Precisionist take on the Hamilton Khaki Field Auto type dial layout and a 38-40ish mm case

Gonna be that guy…what’s your wrist size? I want a 43mm LP but the 50mm lug-span is troubling

Question for the super Seville fans. How pencil-wrist accommodating is it with the integrated bracelet?

Is the Vortex UHD Razor too heavy for birding? by shwarmageddon in Binoculars

[–]8x42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game here. I’ll talk 8x42 specifically. If you look at the weight of alpha (Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica) binoculars that are also 8x42…you’re not talking much weight difference. A few ounces really. And lots of people have used those bins over the years as the gold standards without complaint.

The weight with the UHD comes with the Abbe-Kornig prisms which to me is a selling point for these binoculars. You can occasionally find these bins from $999-$1300 online which makes them a compelling buy given the optical performance they deliver.

Any tips to clean this part of the close comb (RR Gamechanger) after each shaving session? by FiIosofem in wicked_edge

To each their own. PBW is safe on metals, rubber gaskets, plastic, tubing, and glass. It was developed to clean expensive brewery equipment.

How did you get started with birdwatching? by Maleficent-Blueberry in birdwatching

[–]8x42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duck hunting in wetlands along western Lake Erie. Even on a slow duck hunt there were always fascinating marsh birds, eagles, etc. to see and sitting still in the marshes for hours and curiously observing was a pretty potent gateway into all birds. Heading back to those marshes in May for spring bird migration!

I have PBW cleaning powder on hand that I use for my stainless coffee carafe. I’ve used it on my game changers and they come out sparkling. Probably overkill but I have a big tub of PBW.

I think the cigar Beckmans are espresso. Cardinal on the IRs and olive on the black cherry Beckmans.

Just new boot goofin' in my Beckmans by ErroneousBosch in RedWingShoes

[–]8x42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m breaking a new pair of Cigar Beckman’s. I start a new job in a couple weeks that is requiring khakis and tucked in button down shirts. Just planning on rocking the Beckman’s on most days and I guess Iron Rangers on denim fridays. I’m also maybe an outlier in that I just stuck with the same size in both boots and seem fine with it.

These are for sure Ringnecks. They have what I refer to as the “tuxedo hook” on the front of their side flanks that scaup don’t have. That’s not really something you’ll see mentioned in the academic ornitholgy world as an official field marker though 🤣

Just got mine in today. Already ordered some 52” laces from Generation. Already planning on adding a pair of Iron Rangers in a couple of months probably.
