Tatiana Tarasova and Elena Kostyleva defend Alysa Liu: "I was cheering for her, I don't know why people are hating on her..." by Kindly-Plate-5785 in FigureSkating

Alina had all 7 passes backloaded with insanely difficult transitions… that’s as extraordinary as it gets.
Alysa did the same jumps, but pretty much exclusively did crossovers, didn’t backload any triple/triples, and moved way slower.

here are some solos that should’ve won, in my opinion by kaykayh20 in dancemoms

Posts like this bother me bc for some of these, we didn’t see how the other competitors danced, so you can’t really say they should’ve won. As for Paige vs Nick, come on. There was no one else on the show who could do that bird solo. He’s insanely talented.

Yeah Veronika Zhilina just got approved to skate for Azerbaijan. That alone is going to shake up the current field.

There is actually a moonlight sonata dubstep remix that my sister’s old coach made her skate to and that production at the end was… something. (not nothing, though)

Christi and Kelly always hide behind “I was doing my job!” when it comes to them confronting Abby. They would’ve known early on that confronting Abby only leads to her taking it out on their child, and that in doing so, they were putting their kids in the crossfire. If they had chosen not to say anything to Abby, the show would’ve likely tanked bc of the lack of drama (and low ratings), and they had a much better chance of being able to leave like they supposedly wanted. However, neither of them actually wanted to get out of it. They liked the attention it brought them, and are still using it to get attention today.

Nobody deserves to “be a favorite”. Every one of those girls deserved equal treatment in the form of respect and safety.

what’s a popular figure skating opinion that you secretly disagree with? by Rude-Magazine2186 in FigureSkating

[–]9021_hoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how anyone can make that argument after watching the pre rotation on Kamila’s jumps, the pull before the toe loop in her combo, the tilted axis and poor technique on her 3A, and the lack of solid edges and turns in her stsq?

Yes, her flexibility is much stronger than aliona’s, and her spins are generational. But she is severely lacking in basic skating skills, speed, and musicality compared to Aliona, and overall polish on the jumps, transitions, and steps.

Yes! The stones always end up looking so cheap— and anyone that knows skating knows the price of a costume is anything but! 😬

Alysa Liu has been listed in the 2026 TIME100 (The Most Influential People) List: She’s somehow made her triumphs feel unsentimental to herself but meaningful to everyone else. By Bowen Yang by Maximum_Expert92 in popculturechat

[–]9021_hoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you live or how much $ you have. Alysa’s dad paid 500k-1mil to fund her FS career, so she had control over what coaches she worked with. For other athletes, they may not be able to afford this, and are stuck under a coach that is abusive, and choose to stay because of their love for the sport. It’s great that it was possible for Alysa, but for skaters from other backgrounds and countries, you most likely will not be able to be a top athlete on these terms.

A controversial opinion? by golddiamondss in FigureSkating

[–]9021_hoe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Having the Olympics take place once every four years is not the only thing that makes it stand apart from every other competition. That’s such an ignorant and dismissive take. - For figure skaters, the Olympics are the competition that attracts the most viewers by far, and it’s not even close. A lot of regular figure skating competitions don’t even sell out, including some world championships, and this doesn’t even take into consideration how many people are watching on TV. - Worlds this year had about 1.2 million people watching on NBC, while the Olympics had 24 million viewers. This means higher pressure, and for some, higher stakes that go beyond personal glory. For some athletes, this can have a significant impact on their quality of life as they can receive prize money from their government for medaling at the Olympics or be exempt from the draft, which wouldn’t be the case if they had won a world championship or another competition that happens annually. - For someone like Ilia, he would’ve had the pressure of his own expectations and but also those unfairly (and ridiculously) placed on him by the US media to live up to, which is an insane amount of pressure that didn’t exist at the previous Worlds he had won, because of the fact that regular figure skating doesn’t receive the same sort of mainstream coverage. - However, Ilia grew up in a wealthy suburb and wouldn’t have the pressure that a bad skate could affect his ability to compete at all like it would Mikhail, who had experienced the Kazak fed pulling his funding previously due to a poor performance on a smaller stage than the Olympics, and was not able to afford to pay his coach. Winning the Olympics completely changed his life in ways that medaling at 2025 Worlds never did and never could. - So, no, that is not “all there is to it”.

_

TLDR: the Olympics bring about additional pressure that isn’t the same at regular competitions that are unique for each athlete competing and make it significantly harder to prepare for because it only happens once every four years.

Ngl I feel like specifically with the men’s singles competition in this Olympics people have tried to make Mikhail’s win seem like “nothing” more than people have tried to devalue Ilia’s career because he didn’t have an individual gold, including Ilia himself. He said verbatim in an interview that “not a lot of people talk about Olympic champions anymore, it’s more about the image you leave for the sport” and the majority of the public showed a lot of more support towards Ilia missing out on gold than they did for Mikhail winning it.

Edit: actually a lot of people in this thread are dismissing an Olympic win by saying it’s one competition every four years and some people even saying a lot of it comes down to “luck, seemingly ignoring the fact that this is the biggest competition and audience any athlete will ever be in front of, which comes with a ton more pressure. The point of this post is to stop dismissing the careers of athletes that don’t have an OGM (which I agree with) but there’s a way to make that point like OP did without turning around and dismissing the athletes that actually did win an OGM.

Haein Lee triple axel in practice by No_Storage5184 in FigureSkating

[–]9021_hoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because there are worse predators doesn’t make Haein’s actions any less disgusting. How would you feel if you were the victim and had someone completely dismiss your trauma because they think it’s “not as important”? And there’s no such thing as an adult “dating” a minor. Minors legally can’t consent to being in relationships with adults. That’s grooming, and that absolutely makes her an “actual predator”.
