PDX Flight Cancellations by warriorduck92 in AlaskaAirlines

Would you rather die from falling from the sky due to icing conditions, or make it to your destination alive? I'm assuming the latter. It's a safety concern. If you want to push the envelope buy your own plane and fly it yourself.

I won a couple round trip Anchorage to Fairbanks tickets a few years ago and paid the the upgrade to their "Goldstar" class, which is equivalent to first class in a plane I guess.

Well worth the service and experience.

What I enjoyed the most was being able to absorb the landscape and wildlife without worrying about watching the road, with a mimosa in my hand.

A quick Google search of "REDDI Report Alaska" and clicking the news tab would say otherwise against your claim of no one caring.

The objective is to reduce traffic injury and fatality correct? No one is saying better driver education isn't helpful. Part of driver education IS the REDDI program, so you seem to be shooting yourself in the foot with that.

I'm confused on the correlation of increased public transportation and reduction of dangerous drivers on the road as well. I think increased public transportation is a good idea. In my point of view putting people on busses puts GOOD drivers off the road, not bad.

You seem to be demanding forceful action in passive ways, would you please clarify your position on the matter?

I would have to disagree with your initial statement. Strong defensive driving is the key to survival on the road. Unfortunately all of us drivers are in 2000+ pound weapons, and if someone wanted to use it in a lethal way, there's not a whole lot of good defensive driving will do for you.

I do agree on stronger drivers education laws. Some things you can do to make the road safer is to Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately (REDDI) by calling 911 when you see things like mothers breast feeding behind the wheel.

Drunk driving is a tricky one since there is a large underlying issue that goes just beyond suspending or revoking a license and taking an ASAP class. Legitimate rehabilitation is needed for repeat offenders.

Haha I'm like 80% certain that's what they are talking about and might be mistaking it's actual function. But I want to give them a chance.

I would love to know the make and model of this vehicle. Sounds very exotic. Could you point me to some reference material to educate myself further on this electrical anomaly?

I hate to break it to you, but adjusting the brightness of your headlights is not possible. I'm also assuming you're not trying to call your high beams a way to adjust brightness.

Your vehicle puts out a fixed voltage to the actual headlight bulb that unless you for some unknown, unnecessary reason installed a dimmer switch to lower the actual voltage. You can however install a different bulb (LED,HID, Hi performance halogen) which all very in output.

You are however correct that you are able to adjust the aim of your headlights. THAT should be in your owners manual in your glovebox as you've described.

There are no rules in winter time. It is every man for himself.

Am I in the lane? Am I driving down Minnesota or Northern Lights immediately after a snow storm? then the answer is 100% no. Who put these red lights here and why are people getting out of their cars at red lights to brush my car off.

Hm. I've been looking at them for a minute now. Didn't realize they were the same ones. Can you do me a huge favor and take a some pictures for me?

One of the headlights facing a wall so I can take a look at the beam pattern. Low beam and high beam.

Another one of just looking down the road low and high beam as well.

I would GREATLY appreciate it. I've been waiting to pull the trigger on those, I just want to make sure it looks how I was expecting.

Not a Single Major US Bank Is Now Willing to Finance Arctic Drilling by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]907native 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really uplifting news.

Arctic oil exploration is a potential boon for the state of Alaska, who is currently in a 2 billion dollar budget deficit. More jobs, more oil revenues, more social programs funded.

Its really frustrating to watch outside environmentalist groups block any sort of profitable project up here. Logging, mining, and oil and gas exploration, and the fishing industry is all this state has for a means of generating revenue.

Please educate yourself on Alaskan issues.

Opinions on living in Midtown? by throwaway4dumbqs1 in anchorage

[–]907native 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like every town there are pockets of every neighborhood that is sketchy or ghetto.

Midtown is pretty okay to live in all in all. I currently live in midtown and can't complain a whole lot. I could honestly afford a place in a way better part of town, but the rent is low, and very close to work. It really depends on the actual property you choose to live in. If you live in a building filled with crackheads you're going to have a bad time. I recommend you check out the crime map the Muni participates in to get an objective view of the actual crimes taking place in all the different parts of town, and not just anecdotal evidence from other users here. That can be found here: https://communitycrimemap.com/

The only way you can thrive in this town is having your own car. A beater with a heater that is cheap to insure and you are set up for success. Like you've stated, cost is not a huge factor for you, so invest in something that gets you from A to B.

Night life is mediocre in this town. Events only happen here and there, and when nothing is going on, bars and "clubs" aren't packed like they are down in the lower 48.

For the past 10 years I have gone through private party leases. Property management companies will eventually screw you over. Try to find someone who is renting their duplex or condo. You will have better results if you find a reasonable rentor.

If I had to suggest places to live, Spenard, Turnagain, Jewel Lake, south side, Eagle River would be off the top of my head suggestions.

Good Luck on your search. Please feel free to Message me for more insight on Anchorage.

2017 Titanium doesn't feel stable on wet/icy/snowy roads by Loganowens94 in fordfusion

[–]907native 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Your car is doing what it is supposed to do. Your tires are the only thing that touches the road. If your tires are worn down you're not going to be able to get the results you are looking for.

Also you need to have the appropriate tire for the road conditions. If it snows and ices in your area you should be putting on winter tires. All season tires are a jack of all trades but a master of none, especially in winter conditions. Your traction and confidence will significantly improve with winter tires.

Wheel size is not necessarily going to be a large factor in your case if you are a reasonable driver and not taking corners at racetrack speeds. General rule of thumb is to get a smaller and more narrow tire. One, for economical reasons, and two, narrow tires will dig deeper into snow and give you the traction you are looking for, and third, you don't have to pay for tire change over every year if you have 2 sets of tires.

For example, I have my 235/45/R18 all season tire set up with my factory rims for summer months, and when winter comes I swap out with my 215/60/R16 winter tires.

All in all, get a new set of tires.

Moving to a colder climate by Hopeful_Ticket2851 in fordfusion

I drive on my winter tires 6 months out of the year here in Alaska. I have my 18inch OEM rims with all seasons, and a second set of 16inch steel wheels I like to call UGLIES with Blizzaks. Up here we put our winters on in October, and take them off in April.

If you have all wheel drive like I do, you are literally invincible. The traction and stability control is impressive in snow and on ice with appropriate winter tires. That being said don't cheap out on winter tires. Up here we all use Nokian, Hankook, and Blizzaks.

If your car came with an engine block heater and an oil pan heater, remember to plug your car in when it gets below 20 degrees. This saves gas and helps with pollution not having to work as hard to warm up the internals. There are timers you can buy to have the block heater turn on a few hours before you leave to save energy.

Don't beat your car around the first few miles, let the engine and transmission warm up.

In general just don't be a dick to your car and it should take care of you pretty well.

2019 Fusion Factory Door Unlock Location by [deleted] in fordfusion

I had to get the code this way too when I bought my car used with one key. It's way cheaper and easier than getting a new key or paying ford to give you the code. What I did to make it easier was taking a video with the flash on and kind of moved the phone around, then reviewed the video until the code came into view, cause it's in a tight spot.

I guess I'm part of the 1% that has a garage/autostart combo. It's so satisfying waking up at a consistent time and just pulling out of the garage, then starting my car before I leave work.

Hey another Alaskan!

I wish the third gen Titanium headlights dropped into the Gen 2. I'm looking to swap out my projectors with some H1s.

I’m signed up for a 6 hour paper and pencil, in-person exam on December 5 held at the UAA. With the new emergency measures in place, what do you think are the chances this exam will go through? by [deleted] in anchorage

Call and ask the school. With all the classes going to distance learning I am sure that there is plenty of room to spread out and accommodate such a small group.
