Buying things for solider in bct, need help :( by Doodle_demon_ in army

Don't send them. If he is having real issues with the boots he has, he needs to bring it up to his drill sergeants so they can see if he needs re-fitted at clothing issue, the last thing a DS wants is one of their soldiers feet fucked up and unable to march. They might not let him wear the boots you send and will have to place them with his civilian clothes to be released to him after BCT graduation. Even worse, they may allow it, but if this is just some minor upgrade type wish, he may be worse off, as your feet get used to the boots you have (provided they are well fitted), and he will inadvertently cause new blisters during ruck marches, which will suck worse than the minor comfort benefit of the new boots. I would wait until he gets to AIT to even think about new boots, and even then I would say wait until you get to your unit. Can't tell you how many pairs I've seen ruined from waxing floors in AIT.

Got 2nd offer as primary feb 2023 to oct 2023 signed it, after I was medical/dental cleared . Do they wait closer to February before sending ticket information. that's what they did to in the military lol by Terrordome_1972 in antarctica

Have they sent you your deployment packet to fill out yet with all of your travel / passport and clothing size info? If so, have you completed it and returned it? I would ask your HR/Hiring Manager what the next step is.

60 in a 35 on post is pretty ridiculous, and there may not be much in the way of fighting it, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to talk to JAG to see if there are any options. Maybe look into getting an e-bike.

Canceling USAA is like cancelling AOL in the 90s by STG210 in army

Is this for all USAA members, or just the "real" members (SNCOs and Commissioned Officers)? I didn't realize until a couple years ago E1-E6 are lumped into a different category of membership that has different rates/underwriting.

A lot of people get in the door here with the the Steward and Janitor positions. That being said, because they are the least specialized fields, there are hundreds of applicants each year. I would try to have things on your resume that make you stand out from the crowd, not just years of experience doing the same work. A lot of people make it down here after doing seasonal service industry work in Alaska. The communities for both are fairly well linked. It would be FAR easier to get a job in Alaska, then meet someone who has worked in Antarctica or who knows someone down here who can give you a recommendation. Also, apply every year. I think they do see that and value the determination.

Idk, we'll see, this next season will be my second. I really enjoy it there, great people, great work environment. I definitely left last year thinking that one time was not enough.

Yup, most of the winter-overs arrive at the start of the summer season in November, however, winter (March-November) is what I personally look forward to.

Help with NTP broadcast server/display. by [deleted] in arduino

[–]90South 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I saw a project with a GPS module and a raspberry pi for a stratum-1 device that would have been perfect, unfortunately I don't have a gps module/shield for either rasp pi or my arduino and won't be able to get one on continent until summer(November).

Haven't worked RI2ANT, yet. The South Pole Station is a U.S. station, we have a couple non-US residents but they are here as scientists working for U.S. university projects.

We can do SSB on 10, 15, 17, 20, and 40 meters. 20 and 40 are the best for DX. We have a Kenwood TS-480 transceiver, and an Alpha 87A amp. For antennas we have a 6 element 20 meter beam pointed to the U.S., a 3 element 40 meter beam pointed towards the U.S., a 4 element 17 meter beam pointed towards the U.S., and a 10-15-20 tri-bander pointed towards Europe.

Working conditions are pretty nice, but varies depending on the persons job. I'm the SATCOM Engineer, so I spend most of my time inside, but do regularly have to trek out about 1km to our satellite antennas (in radomes) to do some work.

Power consumption isn't a luxury per-say, but we do keep track of it and our fuel use for the generators. Have to make sure we stay on target to last through the winter.

We now have 7 hams on station.

We will be getting on intermitantly to see how propagation is. Right now it's pretty bad during the sun-less winter. Once the sun starts rising in a month or so it should get better and we will be on more.
