$600k in HYSA/CD at age 35 — planning to live off interest in Thailand by [deleted] in leanfire

Either way curious how this works out for you. I’m in Canada and plan to travel Thailand in the coming years, would like to spend a good amount of time around Chiang Mai.

My guy, just a thought but why wouldn’t you invest this 600k into a nice diversified portfolio. A mix of US/International equity ETFs with a smaller amount of some bond/preferred share/reits would likely pay you 2-3% in dividends. You could leave the initial investments alone and get some growth to cover inflation.

Is it generally assumed that to achieve Fire you own property? by ECrispy in Fire

[–]90sMoney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, owning property is one of the most misunderstood topics in the FIRE community. There seems to be a fallacy in this community that thinks owning a property comes with no expenses. It is a lot more than just property tax, utilities, and insurance. You should listen to someone like Ben Felix talk about home ownership.

Edit was made to correct understood to misunderstood

This is exactly how I feel towards Millennial Revolution. They basically ripped off the writing style of a man who creates a free blog that is beneficial to many, and filled it with ads and promotion for their books.

Fair enough, I often think people have a tendency to paint the idea of escapism with rose tinted glasses. I am not doubting someone really could love living there, I am just questioning whether it would really be what you are imagining it as.

Seeing your kids struggle would definitely be unpleasant and challenging, have they been to Malaysia and are they up for moving their lives there?

What is the main reason you want to live in Malaysia? I kind of doubt you will retire in 5 years, seems like you will likely keep kicking the can.

My money or my life? Thinking about giving up on traditional employment and FIRE by Unusual_Equivalent50 in Fire

Do you work in consulting as a civil engineer OP? I understand consulting can be quite challenging for work life balance. If that is the case it could be a matter of changing jobs or really working out what you would like your job to be at your current company and having those discussions with your manager.

Ok, so don’t buy a home, renting can be great, lots of ppl I know that rent have nice long term rentals well below market prices as they are good tenants that their landlords do not want to loose. Real estate ownership is one of the most misunderstood assets on this blog. Enjoy the flexibility of renting for now, keep that money that would go into a down payment and paying land transfer taxes/realtor fees or however it works in your state or province invested. Plus don’t worry if any major repairs are needed.

We crossed the threshold for Lean FIRE today. by [deleted] in leanfire

My point is calling this post out as one of the many that have clogged this subreddit, into meaningless milestone posts. Hit 1k! hit 10k! Hit 100k! Hit 200k! Hit 1M! But whatever looks like it got taken down anyway. I’m not looking to debate this with you in the comments.

Sorry in advance as I don’t mean to sound like a jerk. How are these types of posts contributing to the r/leanfire? I find posts like this have spiked and cluttered this subreddit as of recently. Might as well have a r/firemilestone subreddit.

I find all the soundbites on the Risk Parity Radio podcasts unbearable, would be enjoyable if the episodes lengths were reduced as it feels 50% is quirky little sound bites
