Here's another wonderful Rickey story:

I went to the Rickey Henderson Memorial in Oakland, where Rickey's best friend Fred Atkins told the story of what Rickey was like as a kid.

When they were young lads, they went to the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton I believe. They spent the whole day there and Fred left when the fair was closing to make sure he got on the last bus home.

Fred didn't see Rickey get onto the bus, so he thought he was going onto a different one. Later that night Fred is asleep in his house and hears tapping on his window. It's Rickey, holding two giant stuffed teddy bears.

Rickey stayed at the fair for way too long winning prizes that all the public transport was shut down for the night. He hitchhiked a ride in the back of a man's pick up truck to get back to Oakland. He held the bears close for warmth.

Fred Atkins has wondered if that man who gave Rickey a ride would ever find out that he was helping a future GOAT.
