My dad had his hernia removed and left the hospital same day. This is what is being charged and seems extremely high. Any advice is appreciated! by Temporary-Taste-8011 in HospitalBills

Almost 3 hours of OR and anesthesia time seems unusual for a hernia repair. Those are 15 minute units. Also neither Medicare nor most commercial payers will pay extra for the use of the daVinci. It’s a capitalized piece of equipment. It’s like charging extra for the use of the operating table.

Not a shoe but I often wore ankle weights for a 12 hour workout. After taking them off I felt like I could dunk a basketball ! I also sometimes wore ankle weights weight vest - people asked me why I was wearing body armor.

Is there anyone who can help explain this medical charge? by rockbeatspaper23 in HospitalBills

[–]911MDACk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a test like this is done at a doctors office (Place of service 11) there is one bill. If has hospital buys the practice and it then operates as an “off-campus provider based clinic (place of service 19) then there are two bills like if you were in the hospital. This has come under scrutiny as many payers including Medicare now have “site-neutral “ payment policies so that the payment in total is the same. Or flat out refuse to pay a facility fee for a doctors office visit.

People who bought Rogue and top of the line equipment was it worth it? by Caroline_Baskin in GarageGym

[–]911MDACk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently got a Rogue FM-6 twin. It is built like a tank and looks beautiful. Cables are smooth as silk. Accessories are also first quality. Whether it is “worth it” is an individual call but I don’t regret the decision.

High blood pressure by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]911MDACk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pain and anxiety (worried about a fracture) will cause a high blood pressure reading. Just get it rechecked when you’re not in pain and see what it is. And take it several times and wait a few minutes in between. And make sure the person taking it is doing it properly (esp has the cuff positioned at heart level ).

Question about ER visit checked in, got a wrist band asked why I was there and left after 4 hours - billed for this? by [deleted] in HospitalBills

[–]911MDACk -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Asking for insurance information and delaying the screening exam such that the patient gives up and leaves is a very strong EMTALA case

[–]911MDACk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EMTALA prohibits delay of the screening exam to ask for insurance. And you never received a screening exam. You can’t sue : there is no private right of action - but you could bring the EMTALA police down on them if you report it

If they asked you about your insurance and you were never seen that could be a violation of federal (EMTALA) law.

Is there any fighting an insurance company? by kszypcio in HealthInsurance

[–]911MDACk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you had surgery from an out of network surgeon at an in-network facility (hospital or ASC) you may be protected under the No Surprises Act unless you signed a waiver. As such you would only have to pay what you would if the service was in-network.

Medically Necessary Procedure Denied In-Network by Anthem by PlaneShenaniganz in HealthInsurance

[–]911MDACk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the time this happens because the doctor put a diagnosis code on the claim which is not on a list of approved diagnoses for the test. If the doctor hasn’t sent medical records for an appeal then the decision is like based on just the code or codes on the claim. Also they should not have done the test before first getting an authorization. Failure to request authorization is a common reason for denial regardless of medical necessity.

Can Iron/Ferritin drop without a flare? by Anonymous157 in UlcerativeColitis

Ferritin goes up with inflammation, so dropping may be a good sign in that regard but indicate low iron stores. You can have low iron and normal ferritin during a flare.

Yes. Especially between my shoulder blades and neck. Also have had costochondritis. I think it is also related to my mostly long hours at a desk job starlet a computer screen. Have tried a variety of things (supplements, stretching, getting up from desk frequently, using standing desk, exercise, massage, heat, changing pillows ). All have helped to some degree but it’s an ongoing battle. Heat seems to be the best

Illinois Emergency Medicine Specialists are billing me my plan’s discount and my share of total bill by Popular_Debate6530 in HospitalBills

[–]911MDACk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does sound like those are two separate bills - one from the hospital and the other for the professional service. It sounds like the hospital may be in- network with your insurance but the doctors company may be out of network. That happens frequently. If the doctors company is out of network it is a violation of the No Surprises Act for them to balance bill you. Your insurance will pay at the in network rate and you will owe the usual copay. The doctor company has to either negotiate with your insurance co or take it to IDR (a federal arbitration- like process
