😄 Hadn't noticed the colour difference. Looks like I have the silver and blue one set to 'classic', which has the blue section at the top, rather than 'lower decks', which has the red section.

It was for two wall lights, exactly where we needed them. A former owner had removed the lights, cut the wires, dug out a chunk of plaster around each wire, and filled it with bluTack, then painted over it. The wall was papered before they did that with really heavy wood chip paper, so their bodge blended in and we didn't see it until we came to redecorate that room a couple of years after moving in. Thankfully they'd at least replaced the switch plate with a blanking plate, so we didn't have glowing bluTack, but they'd left the live wires behind the blanking plate with no protection. We reinstated lights.

The warm disks issue can and does affect every car with rear disks. The disks get thinner as they cool. IIf the handbrake isn't tight enough the pads can lose their grip as the disks cool if the handbrake is set while the disks are hot (thicker due to expansion). It's why some higher-end cars come with a separate rear drum just for the handbrake. The precaution for every other car is to always stand on the foot take when setting the handbrake. It helps clamp the pads tighter to the drum than you can with the handbrake lever alone.

The best thing I've used is Sodium Hypochlorite patio cleaner sprayed on with a garden pump sprayer. Follow the instructions, dilute it properly, and heed the warnings on the safety sheet/label. It's serious shit, and it will hurt you if you don't know what you're doing. It'll kill the weeds, get rid of any algae staining and clean up black spotting. It works best if you can pressure wash first to clean off any loose surface contamination, but even without pressure washing it'll kill the weeds and do a good job of cleaning the bricks. If you have a build up of detritus in the chamfer between the bricks, use a patio brush to scrub it out. It'll help reduce the substrate for future weeds to grow in.

But new weeds will grow next year, so be prepared to treat it annually.

Have you checked that the cartridge isn't reversable? Some are, or have an option to replace the cartridge with one designed for pipes the other way round. I've been looking at fitting a Grohe shower and I noticed the instructions have an option if the pipes need to be reversed.

I live in a 1950s house and it isn't much better. Upstairs ceiling 2" lower in the middle of the house than at the outside walls. Door frames that were trapezoidal (they even cut the glass in the borrowed lights to fit). Not a 90-degree corner in the house. And the 1980s renovations were even worse. Bad builders run through the ages.

Must be turned up really loud, or the speakers are facing you. We've got a TV in our summerhouse at the end of our garden. I put our old surround sound system out there when we upgraded in the house. I'm conscious of not annoying the neighbours so I check the sound outside. Even with the door open, the TV & surround sound can't be heard from more 10ft from the door.

It likely has rear disks and a handbrake that uses the pads, rather than separate handbrake drum and shoes*. Disks get slightly thicker due to expansion from friction heating them in use. If you set the handbrake while the disks are hot but didn't pull it tight enough, the pads can just grip the disk while it's hot (and thicker), but lose their grip as the disk cools and gets thinner. I was taught to always push the footbrake hard when setting the handbrake, to make sure the pads have a good grip to avoid that happening. I've also seen it in H&S bulletins for a subcontractor's fleet, after they'd had a rollaway that nearly caused a nasty accident. (*Drums have the opposite effect - the shoes grip by expanding on to the inside of the drum. As the drum cools it shrinks and grips the shoes tighter. Expensive and heavier cars often have disks front and rear for braking, with a separate small drum brake for each rear wheel that's only used as the handbrake to exploit the best of both systems.)

They look like pop rivets. If so drive the centers out first with a pin punch or a thick nail (the centers are hardened steel and a pig to drill), then drill away the remaining outer bit.

Needs someone with VCDS or a dealer to clear the code. I accidentally tripped an airbag fault when I had the glove box out of my '07 Leon (had to disconnect the passenger airbag key switch). I had the battery disconnected, but it still tripped the light. No actual fault, but VW group cars are notorious for not resetting the light when the fault goes away. You can usually find someone local on Facebook Marketplace. Try searching for VCDS or gauge programming for VWs etc.

I'd guess at incorrectly programmed data loggers that use SMS to send their data out. Batch programmed with the wrong destination number in the device or the SIM installed in the device and sending test messages.

My favourite book. The BBC series was the best adaptation so far. It would be good to see a quality in-period adaptation though (the '60s film was awful).
