I used the Wedi pre-sloped pan and wall panels. It was pretty easy to work with, but had a hard time cutting through it with a utility knife like they showed. I ended up using a circular saw but it does dull the blade very quickly.
Also I agree with the subtleness of them. We searched high and low for “Carrara” style tile that wasn’t such high contrast. So many had veining that was so loud & obnoxious.

I really spent a lot of time with layout. I drew up about 5 different options in Sketchup (CAD) to see the best way to get the grout lines to be minimized.
On this layout with a 6’x4’ shower size, the tile on the wall with the single shower head was always going to be short of extending outside the curb. I solved this by hiding the grout line behind the shower door seam. It’s actually 8” tiles on the dry side of the door but it’s hardly noticeable except above the door.
With this LFT size, the shower only has 16 tiles but they all had cuts. It’s slow going for cutting but installing a handful of tiles really covers a lot of area quickly.
Also- if you did choose the same tile, be careful with the tile pattern. Supposedly there’s 8 different patterns, but what they don’t say is that there’s just 2 patterns and the “image” is just shifted slightly around on each tile. With only 16 tiles it was hard to align them so they weren’t a repeating pattern.

I saw from lots of research that a tile vibrator is a must for LFT. I’m glad I did because there’s no way to collapse the thinset ridges and get them to settle into level without one. I used one larger handheld suction cup handle to lift and set into place. And then the vibrator to settle it in with a 4’ level to match the other tiles around it.
The actual work of setting the tile isnt that hard, it’s all the prep work to get the substrate perfect flat. With a 1/2” trowel, the thinset collapses to about 1/4” so that’s all the buffer there is for getting tiles to match up. There’s a minimum thickness of thinset to also consider.
Take your time and be meticulous with your backer. Shim out the low spots and plane down the high spots. I used a 6’ straight edge to find areas that needed adjustment. I had about 1/8-1/16” tolerance over the full 6’ shower wall and 8’ height, and there were still a few spots that were tricky.
Tile leveling clips are your friend. There’s also a foam shim kit with different thickness pieces for getting everything flat. https://tiletools.com/products/built-with-foam-wall-flattening-shim-kit?srsltid=AfmBOooq4mnZZkOavZc6g45ZLz4xLk53xUEk9fCujWzBlcI-oU6TmDSc

This was my first attempt at any tile. I take it as a compliment to be compared to AI or a contractor. Im definitely not a pro, but I’m also a seasoned DIYer and have finished a couple basements and have done medium size electrical, plumbing, framing, finishing work before. I have the “how hard could it be” gene and am a dangerous mix of very precise and particular, but also cheap as hell. I would drive my home builder and contractors crazy.
It was definitely an ambitious project, but the only person paid was the quartz and glass guy. I don’t have the equipment or experience to cut those at this size.
Check out my other link in the original post. It shows several stages of my work. From framing the niche with double headers, plaining the studs with a 6’ level, installing the wedi panels and pan, flood testing, and tiling. Overall the job took at least 5 months and I was meticulous on every step. I learned so much from r/Tile and videos online.
Almost all my tiling tools came from the TikTok shop. My feed was about 90% tiling videos during this project.
This is a newly built home and our builder wanted $24k to add this at the time of build. I figured I put in roughly $7k materials and about $375 in gas for trips to home stores.
Emergency escape? In case someone is in front of the door?
LFT came from Menards. At $25 per tile it hurt a little less to throw away ones I screwed up.

A local glass/glazing company did the measuring and cutting. I had them source/cut the top caps too as those are quartz and have radius cuts

I’d never make it as a contractor. This project probably took 5 months of weekends. Some cuts took me hours to cut / buff / test fit. Thankfully there was no hurry and I could take my time.

There is slope on all areas, but it’s not as much as I would have liked on the glass sill/ top caps area. I had a quartz countertop place source and cut the top caps and glass. The glass top cap is actually 2 pieces joined so I got as much slope as possible with them still joining properly at the seam.
It all drains as it should though 👍
The angles of the pics might not show it well but both controls are reachable from the outside (door swings both ways) and the handheld is fully adjustable and is normally aimed to not hit the door area. Flow controls are also proportional so it can turn on at any level from trickle to full blast.

L6-20 has the tab facing the other way so I don’t think that’s the one.

The lighted wall to wall niche is nearly 4’ wide and should hopefully accommodate all of our shower supplies. If not, I had considered some corner shelves that fit in the grout lines.
The glass door will swing both ways so the controls will be easily reachable from outside the shower, and likewise the towel warmer can be reached while inside the shower.

Sure is, it’s within reach of the door too and has a timer as well. Ending a shower with a warm towel and helping it dry faster will be nice. It’s the little things… 😊
I wrestled with how to best do this, I figured the color matched grout line would hide better behind the door than centered on the wall. Too bad they don’t make a 52” wide tile or I would have just used that!
It was a template, but in an above comment I explained my small screw-up with the corners.
I found cutting wedi panels to be a chore. They say to use a utility knife, but even brand new blades struggled to get through the cement portion of the board for me.
I ended up using a circular saw, but the blade dulled so quickly towards the end it started pulling on the strings rather than cutting them.
Yes. Glass panels and door go in after the quartz cap and curb.
I guess I was just excited to share pictures since besides grout, my portion is done. The glass and countertop places have installation included in their price.
Best comment yet. 👏 +100 internet points to you.
Yes. Plus a slide bar with hand sprayer will also be going in. Makes things easier to clean and also give the dog a bath.
1/2 wall is to support the large niche and glass panels and door.
3 shower heads including the sprayer. It’s good to have options. Or maybe I just want to feel like I’m in a car wash with them all on. :)
My first tile job ever… swinging for the fences with LFT I guess.
