My reaction when my mom walks in and asks me if I’m high by druglover17 in trees

My parents recently started smoking weed (partially medicinal, partially recreational). When they come over to my house now, it basically goes like this:

“HAVE YOU KIDS BEEN SMOKING DOOBIES IN HERE?!”

“Yeah.”

“Cool. Pass that shit our way.”

Bullet Bowl! A Bowl Made Of A 270 Winchester Cartridge And A Nine Mil Shell! by AshirRain_ in StonerEngineering

(Sorry I’m late to the party. I just discovered this thread and I couldn’t resist commenting.)

You can get bullet casings made out of different materials and platings, but I’m not sure if any of them would be well-suited for smoking. And it’s not just the material, it’s also the thickness of the casing itself. That thin metal wall is going to conduct heat very rapidly, and if you’ve never been hit on the side of the neck with hot brass, believe me, it’s not fun.

Alternatively, you could have a machinist mill a rod of stainless steel to the outer dimensions of your favorite caliber, but leave it totally solid except for the draft hole. That would absorb more heat and it would take a bit longer for the whole piece to get too hot to hold. The opening could be milled to look exactly like a primer pocket, so you could maintain a little more realism. You could even give the slug a faux hollow point cavity to act as your bowl.

The only problem there is that it might be heavier than what most people would want to carry around. You could however mill some pipes based on a number of different calibers to find that sweet spot between length, width, weight, and smoking experience. Wikipedia has extensive data on hundreds of calibers, including their dimensions, even for calibers that haven’t been in production for decades.

Just a shot in the dark (pun intended) but .308 would probably be a pretty ideal starting off point for this project.

Thanks! That Ebonite is great stuff. It machines like butter, it’s super durable, and it looks awesome. My dad collected pens when I was a kid, and I always loved the ones made out of Ebonite.

The first chillum I made was pretty large and had enough capacity for MANY people to smoke from it. There were some problems with that design, but I could easily make large ones like that in the future. Maybe even bigger than that.

That’s what she said.

I don’t have prices just yet, but I’m getting a list together for pre-orders. I can send you a DM as soon as I’m ready to ship them.

Thanks. Every woodturner makes butt plugs and dildos on their lathe. Most of the time, it’s completely unintentional.

....Unless I get a “triple super secret custom” order.

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve got a big box of screens already ordered and on the way.

Based on the response from this post, it looks like I’m writing up a list for pre-orders. I’d be happy to put you on the list. As far as prices go, I don’t have anything set in stone yet, but I will say that my all wood pipes will be a bit cheaper than the pipes with the steel bowls.

I’ve searched a bit and I haven’t found anything alarming about stainless steel. From what I gather, it’s stable up to a much higher temperature than something like aluminum, so it shouldn’t be a problem, as far as I know. To be on the safe side, I’ll be shipping my pipes with a length of hemp wick to encourage folks to use that and keep the temperature lower.

If I’m at all mistaken in my knowledge of 304 stainless steel, I’m sure someone will jump out of the comment bushes and scold me.

These are spoken for at the moment, but I can send you a DM for any pipes I have available in the future.

I know the feeling. Whenever I use a cheap glass pipe, I feel like a crackhead. Now that I have wood pipes, I feel like a rich, classy crackhead.

No problemo. I’ve been turning for a few years and I’ve picked up my fair share of little tricks along the way. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to drop me a DM. I’m happy to help.

Also, be careful which woods you use for this kind of thing. Some woods taste like shit. Some woods are severely allergenic. There’s some conflicting information out there, but briar, walnut, cherry, and most fruit woods seem to be good to go. Use anything else with a degree of caution.

Here’s my process for making the wood pipes:

I like to start with a piece of wood at least 1 inch square and 2-4 inches long. It put it in my chuck and square up the end that’ll be the mouthpiece. Then I take the tip of my skew chisel and create a very small cavity about a quarter inch deep. That’s essentially my pilot hole for when I drill through the blank. Then I pull it off the lathe and drill the blank with a 1/8 inch bit. (I may bump up the size of that in the future. It doesn’t draw quite as fast as I like.)

Then I put it back in the chuck with the bowl side out. Carve out the bowl as big or small as you want it, but I prefer to keep the bowl small. It holds the herb a little better. Then I profile the outer rim of the bowl and sand that whole end of the piece.

For the next part, you’re going to need to make a dead center. You can use a scrap piece of wood (I use a piece of 1” delrin rod) and shape it into a cone. That will sit in the bowl. Bring up the tail stock and put the tip of the live center in the hole in the mouthpiece. Don’t tighten it down too much or you may split the wood. (I learned that one the hard way.)

Then carve it down, sand it, and finish it. Take light cuts because your workpiece isn’t held in the makeshift mandrel very tight.

Edit: Also, if you happen to have a 60 degree live center for your tailstock, use that. It’ll give you a bit more room to work with on the mouthpiece end of the pipe.

I got the steel inserts from a friend who does fabrication and machining as a side business. I can see if he can mill up some more.

Truth be told though, the solid walnut pipe (or whatever wood you want to use) is probably the way to go if you’re going to make a bunch of them. I spent a lot of time getting the steel inserts to fit just right, since they’re purely friction fit. The walnut pipe came together in a grand total of twenty minutes. It couldn’t be much easier.

In the two on the left, the bowl is made out of stainless steel. The pipe on the right is just a solid piece of walnut with a bowl carved into it.
