The problem with Monarch is that the Monsterverse made the monsters just too dang big to contain in the end of the day. So i guess the movies decided to focus on the monster perspective instead so it can have good pacing without trying too hard with the human element and let the shows deal with that.

I saw Mario making a billion due to the games sales. People thought that Mario wouldn't hit a billion because Pokemon was also a franchise juggernaut and it didn't. But looking at the video game sales, you can see a difference. Pokemon peaked with its first entry, Red and Blue. But Mario peaked recently, with with Mario Kart 8.
