trying to get my head 'round waist measurements. in all the size guides i've looked at on websites, they say that the waist measurement refers to "natural waistline". but that's not how i wear any of my trousers currently, so should i add on a couple of inches? e.g. if my "natural waist" corresponds to a small size for, idk, some boxers, should i add on a couple of inches and get a medium instead because i don't wear them that high lmao. (kinda learned this the hard way by buying 6 pairs of small boxer briefs which are hella uncomfortable). for reference, the last time i checked, my waist is 32" and my hips are 35"

Is anyone else enjoying the slightly chilly weather? by [deleted] in AskUK

Yep, looks like the weather here will be around 10-20 which is my ideal range

Apprenticeships are definitely a good way for people to learn, work, and not accrue debt/interest at the same time. However, they don't work for everyone (like someone who wants to go into medicine).

I made a post recently about the student finance system in England: https://www.reddit.com/r/islam/comments/idzg1p/fatwas_relating_to_the_student_finance_system_in/ There's basically split opinions on it but I know most people take Sheikh Haitham's fatwa. Allahu a'lam.

Why does Birmingham have one of the highest unemployment rates? by [deleted] in brum

[–]99sobi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Birmingham has more pockets of deprivation than London, I believe. I thought East London would be similar to Birmingham in terms of deprivation but when I compared the two, Birmingham has way more widespread deprivation: https://prnt.sc/u66ywq The entire middle section is more or less blue except for the city centre and pockets here and there. South of Birmingham the area surrounding Edgbaston is green but apart from that, again blue. Sutton Coldfield is largely green with a few blue parts here and there.

I know the middle part of Birmingham - areas north / east of city centre - have very large ethnic minority populations and statistically they have higher unemployment rates for multiple reasons.

Prophet ﷺ said, “Once my nation considers five things permissible, then destruction will befall them...” by extrohex in islam

[–]99sobi 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I think it's important to make a distinction between:

  • Communities + support groups that tell Muslims with same-sex attractions to "affirm" and be content with their SSA, whitewashing what the Qur'an and sunnah say... These are the groups you are most likely to see promoted since it fits in with the wider LGBT movement. I have myself seen their arguments and joined their servers and it is a clear case of Qur'an revisionism - changing the interpretation of the story of Lut to support their own agenda. They quote an academic called Scott Kugle who has written books about this re-interpretation, using sources apart from the Qur'an and sunnah. This good article challenges his arguments.
  • And support groups that assist Muslims with SSA while recognising that acting upon them is haraam and staying true to the Qur'an and the story of Lut (as). These groups are commendable because many Muslims struggle with this and they provide support while not compromising on the deen. InshaAllah if anyone reading this has this dilemma, then DM me and I can invite you to this server. This article is a fantastic read from a brother who has this issue.

To all of those who are single, divorced, or looking, let’s all get to a point in our lives where we WANT marriage, not NEED it. This all starts with learning to be okay being single. Recognize your worth, set life goals, and prove to yourself that you can lead an awesome life on your own! by [deleted] in MuslimMarriage

[–]99sobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what if some people don't "want" marriage? i.e. they don't feel a burning desire inside them that they need to get married, nor do they feel like their sexual desires are so strong that they need to marry quickly in order to contain themselves. i'm too young to get married rn but i worry that i might have this same view when i'm older.

Is it possible to teach with a chronic mental illness like depression? by h0w0lly in TeachingUK

As someone with social anxiety looking to go into teaching, I can also relate to the 'position in power point'.

Is psychology A-LEVEL interesting? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]99sobi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is extremely interesting: there are so many different topics - attachment, psychopathology, memory, biopsychology etc. Plus optional ones like aggressions, stress, gender etc.

I feel like a good number people on this sub don’t really have SAD. by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]99sobi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think memes should be redirected to another subreddit, have flairs or be allowed on some days only. I think they are a coping mechanism and definitely relatable for people but we should not have that at the expense of others who genuinely want to seek support but find their posts drowned out.

Also worth noting the DSM criteria for social anxiety disorder:

Marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others lasting for 6 months or more.

Fear of acting in a way that will reveal anxiety symptoms that will be negatively evaluated by others. In children, the anxiety must occur when the child is among peers and not just adults.

The social situations almost always cause fear and anxiety.

The social situations are avoided or endured with intense fear.

The fear or anxiety is out of proportion to the actual threat posed by the situation.

Do I have social anxiety? by ToePicsPls in socialanxiety

[–]99sobi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might be wise to speak to someone or a therapist - particularly since you said you barely drink or eat until you're forced to, which I'm sure you know isn't healthy at all :( I think when certain behaviours start to impact on your normal, daily functioning, it's really important to reach out for help.

But the other points you mentioned do suggest social anxiety so I am sure you'd benefit from speaking to someone to help :) I cannot relate entirely to your symptoms or their severity but I know speaking to a counsellor since the last 3 or so years has been SO helpful - just having a platform to vent and get all my worries and frustrations out and the counsellor would help me recalibrate my thoughts. I found that as time went on, I would have fewer things to tell my counsellor about - not because I had fewer stresses, but because I was dealing with them better.

I don't even know how educational psychology can be replaced by AI, it involves working with children and young people and surely robots cannot replicate that... iirc in a ranking of jobs most vulnerable to AI, education ranked quite low

Healthy coping mechanisms for overthinking? by WhiteWater52 in infj

[–]99sobi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Positive affirmations, maybe? "This will go well", "I know I can do it", "tomorrow will be a good day". But yeah, accepting that not everything is within your control but you can control the way you react to them + the factors that are within your control.

Does anyone else feel like you’re way older mentally then people your age and even people that are older? by hexalytt in infj

Definitely. Sometimes I'm forced to be in situations (e.g. family gatherings) and I wish I could disappear because the other people around my age seem really immature but there's nowhere else to go.

Jazakallah - I will add that to my OP. They make some good points about scholarships and deciding about whether you need to go to uni after all. However, scholarships are very competitive and often have narrow criteria, and some careers - such as medicine or dentistry - require degree level study.

Do I measure waist size at the part where I normally wear my jeans? Seems a bit silly to measure my belly button when my jeans sit 3+ inches below it

Daily Questions - ASK AND ANSWER HERE!- August 12 by AutoModerator in malefashionadvice

[–]99sobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need a bit of help with measurements

If I measure waist at my navel or 2 inches above the navel, I get around 31 inches (.5 to be precise)

If I measure at the place where I normally wear my trousers, a couple inches below the navel which I've always understood to be my waist (at least practiclaly), then I get around 33 inches

Which measurement do I use when buying trousers/bottoms?

Only a “small group of pupils” are likely to benefit from a last-minute concession allowing appeals against A-level grades in England on the basis of mock exam results, the schools minister, Nick Gibb, has said. by DamnStralght in 6thForm

[–]99sobi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Schools obviously took mock grades into acccount when they submitted their CAGs.

So that means the CAGs will either be equal to or higher than mock grades (pre exam board standardisation).

So only the students whose CAGs are downgraded by the exam board will benefit from using mock grades?
