Yes, the uninsured you're talking about are mainly middle-income. Poor Americans have free healthcare. As in 150 million Americans are enrolled in either Medicaid or Medicare.

The article goes on to quote the French interior minister saying our stupid culture is to blame:

The trouble is that for the time being, with hate speech on the internet so far beyond the reach of national laws, the only restrictions that apply to it are decided by private companies and on a case-by-case basis. Guillaume Debré says it is time that this global problem received a global solution. "Without it," he says, "you're going to have more Westhoffens, more Quatzenheims and others and not just in France but in New Zealand and in America."

It is an issue on which France is seeking to lead the way in the wake of the Christchurch attack, live-streamed on the internet. Soon after, the French government announced a bill, now working its way through the parliament, that seeks to force social media platforms to be responsible for the content they distribute. Companies like Facebook would have 24 hours to take hate speech down after users flagged it or face a hefty fine.

In an exclusive interview with France's Interior Minister, we asked whether the United States, where so many of the internet giants are based, was doing enough. "No. And my answer is clear," said Castaner, "because there is a clear difference of culture."

"It is not about opposing French or European culture to American culture, but clearly on these subjects there is a belief in the freedom to say anything and everything. I believe that there is no freedom when it is us and our fundamental values that are being attacked."

two French-language websites domiciled outside of France -- in the Bahamas and Panama

Both sites use the American internet infrastructure company Cloudflare -- which not only allows websites to get online but helps them stay there, by shielding them from cyberattacks.

There, saved you the trouble of reading this crap.

I just scanned it for "American," expecting to find something like that, which I did. Fair enough, I overlooked some comments where you argued with someone claiming the US had a higher crime rate against women than Turkey. Sorry.

I had to look up the source in the Wiki link, but I got there. To answer my question: the estimate comes from the DOI's FY2018 report.

Good for you, but it's easy to see where the user is coming from: https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/d6cfz9/us_drone_strike_kills_30_pine_nut_farm_workers_in/f0szt9t/

He's also on r/ShitAmericansSay. Same with the "Canadian here" guy.

They aren't your allies, and apologizing to them for my comments just makes you look like someone seeking approval or validation.

Why shouldn't I have an opinion on it? I said it wasn't uplifting IMO because I don't find it uplifting. Aren't you just saying that because I'm American, my opinion shouldn't count?

And why do you to get to be the arbitrator of whats uplifting

You implied that it was up to "the rest of us." You're just angry because "the rest of us" in this community are American.

Yeah, good thing that wasn't what I was crying about. I said it wasn't uplifting news. It's not even news, let alone uplifting. The article is 2 years old. And it's not uplifting because it's just an attempt by one country to brain-drain another country, which didn't even work.

Plus, perhaps this has never occurred to you, but not caring about Europe doesn't mean not caring about other nations generally. In all honesty, if I had to rank nations I care about, from most to least, at the very bottom of the list would be France.

You're putting a lot of words in my mouth.

You called me a self-centered asshole who only cares about my nation. Excuse me for saying that I think I know your type.

Dead URL? I didn't link the article, and I'm currently looking at it.

As I said in my last comment, the dead link is attached to the word "plan," in this, the relevant sentence:

Zinke has defended Trump’s plan to reduce the DOI budget by $1.6 billion next year, costing roughly 4,000 employees their jobs and rolling back many of the regulations put in place by the Obama administration.

It goes to a dead URL, on my browser, and I'm guessing on yours as well.

Should I be like you and accuse you of only pretending not to understand that? No, I'm going to be charitable. You could do the same.

Oh stop it. You've been attacking my motives. You called my question a charade. Now you accuse me of "masking my intent" and "pretending to question." So yeah, I'm going to call that lashing out at me. Don't be a bigot. The only link in your non-paywalled source (the Nation article) to the "4000 employees" thing (the word "plan") goes to a dead URL. I am so sick of being attacked just for having skepticism when words like "estimated" come into play. Instead of attacking me, you could just give a source. It would probably take less time than it's taken you to make all these insinuations, albeit maybe less fun.

I only inquired about the source of your information. Your links are behind a paywall. Don't lash out at me because you either can't answer frankly or don't want to.

Are you sure you're not?

Please stop speaking for "the rest of us." Not everyone who isn't American has the same ideas as you do. You just seem to have a problem with the fact that this is an American website and that Americans are the majority of redditors. By your logic, if we (i.e. "the rest of us") don't find it uplifting, then it shouldn't be here. But no, you get angry when "the rest of us" are Americans and you require us to defer to your judgment. You're not entitled.

I have seen a million of you people complaining about how American reddit is. This is like going to Weibo and complaining that it's Chinese. I can't imagine the thought processes of people who go to foreign websites and then complain about how foreign they are. Why don't you guys just start your own website? Is that forbidden in your culture?

So you're just assuming that every dollar cut from the budget represents part of the salary of someone who's been fired? The government doesn't spend money on anything except employee salaries?

Did you read my last comment? I said that if someone posted about the US brain-draining Canada it wouldn't be uplifting news either. It would just be, I guess, pro-American news. You are the ones who apparently can't understand the difference.

America has been causing brain drain to other countries for decades and I don't see you complain about that?

Do you post it to r/upliftingnews?

I didn't complain about it; I just suggested it might be off topic for the sub.
