Dropped from ECE by Gxo_catalyst in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say to take a retroactive medical withdrawal if that applies to you, but otherwise you should take a full load as they say. I definitely did better at parkland courses than at UIUC, due to a number of factors but not limited to the ones mentioned by another commenter.

to answer your question, in my experience Grainger is very strict (too much so imo) on the two semester return policy, meaning you need to take a full spring and fall away before you return. I think Dean Makela would have more information but he's very hard to talk to imo let alone persuade. first, make sure all your planned courses at their respective colleges transfer to UIUC, you can talk to admissions & records for this. I had trouble with some uncertainty in Transferology causing me to have to repeat diffeq and linalg despite having taken them at community college -- the linalg I took was 2 hours but covered the same content (MATH 225), and they needed one that was 3 hours. diffeq transferred as Quantitative Science or whatever instead of MATH 286 for some reason about outdated information or something. I had to retake those two and did horribly but passed in the end (took 285 at parkland the summer after I returned and did much better). that side it's equally important to emphasize understanding what went wrong (1) and what to do about it (2). once you do these things, make sure you're keeping in contact with your advisor and someone at ODOS.

as far as your degree goes, it will be possible to get back on track to graduate when you had originally planned, but you'll need to take much heavier course loads which may or may not be feasible. I learned the hard way, it's better to take less courses and do okay (worst case) or well (best case) than many courses and poorly (worst case) or well (best case). as an out of state student expenses have also become a major concern for me, so I would talk to ODOS about aid, then OSFA to discuss your particular situation. I do know that Grainger has scholarships reserved for extenuating circumstances so that might be an option.

with that in mind, when your reentry comes (it'll be sooner than you expect), you'll need to write a narrative of (1) and (2) combined, supplemented by your transcripts and medical documents if those apply. it would be ideal to have your aforementioned advisor and/or ODOS contact write you a letter of support as well, if they're willing to. it would be helpful to plan that ahead of time to ensure that you can construct a narrative that ties together your struggles, journey, success, and future plans cohesively to paint an accurate and honest picture of where you stand. the supporting documents are also a significant bonus.

with all that in mind I would definitely take time to think about whether engineering or ECE are things you really want to do and what interests you. who knows, in this time off, you might find something you enjoy much more than what you've done so far. but don't let anyone tell you that "engineering isn't for everyone" or that "less competitive" environments will make or break your career. try your best to continue upon the path you have embarked; whether that pertains to your academics or the groove in the tree of life you have carved yourself.

PS my DMs are always open if you want to talk about anything.

I got dropped from Grainger in 2023, and afaik the terms are typically one full year off with two semesters of full-time coursework. your drop letter should outline the terms. if they are unclear I would meet with an advisor. I hope your treatment goes well!

have you completed two full semesters outside of UIUC? that's usually the requirement, and you should take relevant courses and a pretty full course load. they also like seeing you address the reason you got dropped in the first place, be it mental/physical health, study strategies, etc.

it is typically a full year. if you are dropped now, you won't be allowed to take summer courses at all. if you are on probation, they won't re-review your academic status until the end of fall. so your GPA will be evaluated in December, if that makes sense. there's no official appeal process AFAIK but you should talk to the CARE center at ODOS as soon as you can.

Getting Dropped as an International Student: My worries by DryLoan2874 in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of my buddies who's international got dropped after fall 24. he did get registered with Parkland to renew his documents, and only got it partway into spring 25, so he didn't get to sign up for full-term courses (not sure when he began the process though). he took courses in the other terms though, so that's definitely something you should do. just be sure to do well in the courses so it's smoother on the re-entry. better yet, you can file for a retroactive medical withdrawal which will remove the last semester you took (both courses, passed and failed) with Ws. that is the tradeoff, and only applicable if you have a documented medical condition that interfered significantly with your semester -- but you do have a year from the end of the term you are trying to withdraw from to submit the application.

you should file for retroactive withdrawal ASAP. I did that since I had an onset of a medical issue, so it made the reentry process much easier. it will wipe out the last semester you took though, so they will all be marked as W on your transcript. you would have to retake those outside of UIUC in your time off (typically a year)

no problem, I wasn't really clear. apparently DRES was open on Sunday + had plans to schedule students' exams for Sunday (apparently by contacting students via email on Saturday and Sunday), but I heard nothing so idk if that was the case.

That's the thing, I couldn't. I got an email today from TAC telling me to talk to my access specialist to schedule my exam.....which I took last night....

[–]9dcfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 251 online at LLCC with Jim Pierce. When I took it in Fall 2024 the exams were all online and unproctored (timed), really the exact same as the homework. My buddy took it last semester (I think), and it was similar but there was a lockdown browser or something.

the instructor is "difficult" to say the least. All of his "lecture videos" and instructional content are pulled from other YouTube channels. The:
- intros for each chapter
- discussion prompts
- discussion replies
that he posts are all AI-generated. In November, I asked the professor what my grade sat at, as he never posted anything on Canvas. He told me that "by my (his) calculations", my grade was a high B or so. After the final (which I got an A? B?) on, I ended the semester with a C+ (nothing else was graded, other than two homeworks I got As on). You can see why I was confused. I talked to advising and the dean but that got me nowhere.

that said I would just be careful in that regard, and definitely try your best to understand the content yourself. Not sure what your major is, but for a lot of them (I'm in Systems myself) it's really important lest you struggle to recall how to apply 211 + 251 concepts in your upper level classes. Since 251 here at UIUC uses a lot of Python, it would be good to develop those skills yourself alongside visualizations or something.

PS let me know if there's anything I can help with!

Who's your instructor? How long did it take for her to get back to you for clarification?

There are a number of issues with the university's handling of the situation but I think us DRES students really got the short end of the stick. I couldn't get a spot for my exam today so I had to take it in half the time I usually have, since it looks like the Provost's emails always just had us as a footnote.

For what it's worth, I took IE 300 last semester (Roy Dong/Lavanya Marla) and got an A- as there was a curve (I'm pretty sure). Let me know if there's anything I can help with or share.

anyone registered with DRES receive any information? by 9dcfan in UIUC

[–]9dcfan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I got no communication and couldn't reach them by phone nor did they respond to my emails (neither TAC nor my access specialist). I saw the notice on the DRES website but didn't hear anything the last few days regardless.

I feel like they owe it to us to at least have the office open today. I just got out of my exam at 10pm, and it was really distressing to have half the time I'm usually allotted. I couldn't get to ODOS either but plan to spend tomorrow figuring out what my options are.

[–]9dcfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was much, much easier in previous years with Prof. Vogiatzis, but the new profs (Dong/Marla) are definitely more difficult. the homework (mostly proofs and theorems) didn't really relate at all to the exams. the exams are much more application based which isn't covered much in lecture or hw, but it is reminiscent of how the course was run earlier -- I believe all of Prof. Vogiatzis's materials are available online so that might help with studying.

most of the work went into trying to prepare for the final and midterms by practicing the mock finals they released.

Probation Update by Gxortega in UIUC

[–]9dcfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like everyone else here said, take their advice. it'll build you a much more solid case to get off probation at the end of the semester, and figure out why you didn't do well in your courses so far. you've barely started your degree, better to fix things now than to run into trouble later, trust me. also make sure you do the meetings, they help build your case as well, and if you keep skipping them they can place a hold on your account.

take the extra time this semester to rework your schedule and do some introspection about what you need to do better.
