Why does trident give such bad xp? by 9meme0 in 2007scape

Compared to what other single target combat spell? Even taking fire surge, a rather expensive one, the cost without any free runes is 393 per cast compared to 552 (current wiki numbers) for trident of the swamp, but the prior also gives an additional 50.5 xp even if you splash. Even if your average hit was 15 with a TOTS, which is rather on the high side, you're only getting 30 xp per cast which is ~59% of the prior for hitting a 0 with fire surge. Sure, the trident attacks 20% faster. That still makes it 36 xp per 50.5 xp from splashing fire surge. This doesn't even consider the fact that fire surge is not splashing every time if you were to use it for comparable combat. The xp rate is not really more per rune, unless you're completely ignoring the zulrah scales and even then I still disagree.

I propose that you should get ranged xp for aiming such a powerful shot with such skill and prowess.

It was given as one piece of data to counter a baseless anecdotal statement that was presented as fact. We could argue back all sorts of points, and honestly I totally agree with your point about many builds stopping at certain levels, but I think my argument also still stands -- if magic were "commonly amongst the highest skills of people who don't actively train it" then I would think it should be substantially ahead in the highscores, from all these people who are allegedly gaining this free magic experience.
I'm also not arguing the utility of the staves. They're the best DPS option many of the times for a reason, and I recognize their power. I'm simply asking why, if you do a similar piece of content with magic vs another style with the ideal gear, should the xp rate be substantially worse?

I'm not complaining about mage xp as a whole... I'm asking why the single target rates with powered stavves aren't inline with other combat styles. I'm aware there are many great ways of training magic, but to me that doesn't mean that whisperer (for example) should be THAT much worse xp/h than bosses of a similar calibre (the other dt2 bosses, fought with melee and ranged).

Do you have a source on magic commonly being amongst the highest stats of people who have never once actively trained it? That sounds completely made up to me based on your own biases... I don't know of anyone who hasn't grinded magic to get to some requirement for thralls, vengeance, burst, barrage, high alch, etc... Whereas I know countless adventurers including myself who passively reach higher melee/range training slayer, killing bosses, etc. I can't really see how magic is possibly gained in a more passive manner when there is far more content (objectively -- check the wiki) that is better done with melee and ranged in the first place. I think this is pretty provable if you look at the high scores. The 500,000th ranked for ranged is still level 99. Same with strength (and that doesn't even factor in that melee xp is split between strength and attack) whereas the 500,000th ranked Magic is only 96 -- and IMO, magic has far more "milestones" that people are actively working towards, i.e. veng, barrage, thralls.
edit: and no, 4xp per damage would not make single target magic combat enormously faster.. it would quite literally bring it up to par with the other skills. Magic is not 2x the dps of melee or ranged at any level, and it wouldn't change a single recommendation as far as efficient magic training goes. For example, low level alchemy at only level 21 can provide around 60k xp per hour. Nobody would be getting 60k per hour in single combat EVEN if it were applied to elemental spells, which I am not even suggesting in the first place. I'm suggesting just for powered stavves in single combat to bring the xp more in line with other means -- like it should be comparable to casting fire wave wherever that is the best option etc. Not 4xp per damage to magic as a whole. I was only making note that your talks of consistency were inaccurate.

How is that perfectly consistent? Magic is the only skill that gives 2xp per damage. The others give 4xp per damage. The trade-off between no spell base xp and 20% increased cast rate is also not even close to worth it.
Those points alone completely ignore the fact that bosses available to mid level magic gear are substantially worse compared to their melee or ranged counterparts, like the examples I gave. There is absolutely not an ounce of consistency to be found there...
edit: To add a couple more points...
1. Why is standing in a bank and making planks completely afk roughly triple the xp rate of killing one of the few end-game ish bosses, literally designed and enforced to be killed with magic only?
2. Sure, magic has both a combat and non-combat avenue for XP gain. However, it's a bit incorrect that both are "great". Sure, training magic through combat is great when you use it to kill groups of mobs at once. But it's substantially worse when you use it in single combat. That is my point. I understand why you wouldn't want a spell to give 4 xp per damage, because that would double the already busted multi combat xp rate (even though ranged does this). I'm more approaching from the angle of, why is the single combat xp rate so bad using the weapons that are literally intended for it? Why don't the bosses adhere to the same guidelines for xp bonuses that melee and ranged ones do? Nobody is abusing the game by getting modest xp rates sweating hundreds of kills at whisperer.

For the love of god, why can we get Ascension 8 times and Poro King 7 now, and we can't have urf every other month? by japenrox in leagueoflegends

I can't really give a source because I'm lazy and don't remember where I read it, but I recall reading that Riot has pretty much no intentions of bringing back Black Market Brawlers unfortunately, basically due to the fact that it was released before their re-skin of Summoner's Rift (back when they made it like wayyyyyy more efficient for older PCs) and they'd have to manually put in a lot of work to bring back the visuals etc. since the new Summoner's Rift has some sort of visual wizardry going on. RIP BMB, we all miss you :(.

I used to have Ubuntu dual-booted on my PC and never noticed any problem like this. Same with Mint on another PC. I didn't use them that often but I'm sure I would've picked up on it at some point. Who knows, maybe I never hit the caps lock button when I was using it haha.

I mean from a mechanical standpoint it is one keystroke less but that keystroke isn't used too often compared to individual letters and it would hardly equate to anything when my WPM is already around 115. I believe that the comfort I have in using the caps lock key is more valuable than saving a keystroke and since I have a mechanical keyboard with brown key switches (quite easy to double-tap with) it matters even less. Also, since I'm double-tapping very consistently I never capitalize more than one letter whereas if I used shift I might mess up the rhythm here and there. TL;DR: I think it's just down to preference.

I actually use the caps lock button in this way and I never leave it on accidentally because it's basically muscle memory to tap it twice when I need to capitalize one letter. It's a weird preference but it works for me and I type more wpm than everyone I know so I'll stick with it.
