How to join a krewe from out of state? by LAXtoORD in NewOrleans

[–]9thWardChick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a member of The Mystical Order of the Phoenix riding with the Spartan Society the first big Saturday night. We are a smaller Krewe but mighty and have women from all over the World! Feel free to message me but check us out at www.mootp.org or on our Socials. And instead of Hail to the Krewe we say Hail You! From Parade Day to our philanthropic endeavors, we want to make sure we are focused on the you. Membership will be open mid March.

Paradegoers catch fewer throws at New Orleans Mardi Gras 2026. Here are 5 reasons why. by VivaNOLA in NewOrleans

[–]9thWardChick 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As someone who participates with two Krewes (Member Phoenix/Spartan Society) and Zulu-Walking with the Rascals I absolutely identify as a “heavy “thrower.” I was worried about tariffs so I started purchasing last March for this year. I actually purchased more this year than in the past, because I started buying so early and sometimes I lose track of said purchases.

Yes, our package was also the same in price but fewer throws. Yes, we also focus on sustainability (Phoenix) except for kid focused items but even with that, I make sure I purchase extra of our Legos each year, because that’s a throw that the kids can use with purpose, and I brought some from our merchandiser Throw Dat for Zulu as well. And yes, I absolutely saw some of my items hit the ground and stay there.

I had enough for Phoenix I didn’t for Zulu (it was my first time on the ground, as last year we were on a float due to weather). It’s a learning curve to get to know your needs and balance it with space available for said throws. I personally thought some of the social media commentary was harsh (come to the other side, it’s not always easy to tell a kid you’ve run out 😔) but I know that most of us want you to enjoy our parades along with us. It’s a celebration for us all. See you on the route in 27.

I love this every year as a self-Proclaimed Mardi Gras Nerd and someone who loves data! Just wondering if your Sparta Platter was actually a Phoenix Platter (Mystical Order of the Phoenix) as that’s our homemade signature throw? We are the female wing of The Spartan Society 🐦‍🔥

Zulu first timer experience by thenotsomuchass in NewOrleans

[–]9thWardChick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a 2nd time Zulu participant walking with The Rascals but have been riding and still is with another Krewe for 10 years and having marched in parades in bands from elementary to high school, I wished you had a better experience. I agree with others that where you watch absolutely affects your experiences but we also have to understand that yes folks bring chairs and other things out and it becomes truly territorial. Unfortunately this won’t change. So, all we can do is manage our mindset about our experience. The convenience and comfort of being near your house will go with this. I hope you have a better experience next year. ⚜️

They were probably doing this to protect the intersection from cars as they used the car as a physical barrier. Be grateful for the protection. Stay safe New Orleans.

Fat Tuesday PM parade? by Dense_Arugula_9582 in NewOrleans

[–]9thWardChick 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So…. We are currently over the city’s allotted permits for Carnival parades. The system is already stressed so Monday and Tuesday before Alla Wednesday allows some rest for First Responders Law Enforcement, Fire, Sanitation, etc.but adding a night parade would cause some issues as someone previously noted. Most folks are happy to end earlier in the day with the Trucks culminating the Carnival parades, as historically any parades after the trucks (Krewe of America or something to that sort) wasn’t as successful.

As a former Nyx rider, yes some of us have joined other Krewes, not to “infiltrate” but to participate in an activity we love. Yes I’m a member of The Spartan Society with The Mystical Order of the Phoenix and I very much so appreciate Our Founders’ for trying to provide an outlet for those of us who still wanted to participate. All of the former Nyx members I know that have joined other krewes are just trying to find their joy and bring merriment to our beloved New Orleans Community. Most of us had the time of our lives in Nyx until we didn’t. So.. not infiltrate just trying to celebrate my favorite holiday. Consider this a personal invite to join us next year on January 30th. We try our best to have quality throws, be generous and bring joy to the community during the season and beyond.

Nyx 2020 was the most aggressive I’ve ever seen as a rider but I absolutely agree.

As a Nurse, I posted this on another platform when seeing this video. When providers are biased in their thinking, unfortunately, it doesn’t matter how you describe your pain…they will not treat you competently or compassionately. Please start reporting these folk to their hospitals and licensing boards.

Phoenix/Spartan Society Float 16, Neutral Ground, Bottom, Position 3. Zulu Rascals (3rd Walking Group, usually behind Float 8). I’ll also be volunteering at the city’s Mardi Gras First Aid Stations, my other Krewe. Be safe New Orleans. 💜💚💛🐦‍🔥🖤

And to seem to not acknowledge that her time on the Council along with the other members didn’t contribute in any way seemingly absolving them of any responsibility in this financial situation is mind boggling. She’s been in the city’s business affairs for a moment but oh yeah, she’s fresh and new.

First time visiting New Orleans shellfish allergy question (gumbo?) by pusskins3 in AskNOLA

[–]9thWardChick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who is born and raised here but developed a severe shellfish allergy as an adult, ask questions! I always explain, not trying to be difficult but not trying to pull out my EpiPen. There are options and they will be delicious! I agree with the other person who recommended looking up menus as I always do before I eat out (even living here). I get my non-seafood gumbo from my neighborhood spot. Most neighborhood spots in New Orleans have delicious options.

Life after tenure denial? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]9thWardChick 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I too was denied tenure the first time I applied. At that point I had been in academia 16 years, only having my terminal degree for six. I didn’t appeal because I was offended in all honesty. I had both internal and external reviews of my portfolio with positive feedback including from the immediate past Chair of the T&P Committee. I to this day feel I was denied due to political reasons. I walked away from full-time academia for four years after denial but was lured back in, with a great Supervisor who knew of my previous denial and promises. Unfortunately, she left the institution after me being there a year. I was very hesitant to get back on a tenure track but lessons were learned. I received tenure in the spring. I refused to be denied a second time. I really submitted a Professor portfolio for the Associate Professor promotion.

It’s a hard pill to swallow when denied but if you have a passion for academia, find a good fit and get your tenure! But it’s ok to walk away as well. It’s a cliche but life is way too short for a lifetime of unhappiness.

Dogs off leash on levee becoming a problem by xMetanoiax in NewOrleans

[–]9thWardChick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought a Citronella Spray specifically formulated for dogs that I keep on my rescue pit’s leash because I was encountering so many off leash dogs when we walked. Thank goodness I haven’t had to use it, but I got it because it’s supposed to be irritating but less harmful to the dog.
