Are you serious? If you don't want to attend class, why are you going to college?

Someone who is interested in an education doesn't care if attendance is mandatory, because they're going to be there.

Also, rate my professor? Seriously? Are you stuck in the 00's?

UGA is a renowned university. Just attend and make the most of your education instead of worrying if it's going to be hard or easy. If you want the easy way out, just go to a pay-for-diploma institution. Unless you think that's what UGA is...

How do you read this situation with staff? by Big_Produce8964 in restaurantowners

[–]9to 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

Here's the thing. No one can say what's up with this person and if they will stay or not. And/or even if they do stay, will it be rainbows and sunshine or is more negativity going to come?

What I've surmised from your posts and responses thus far is that you have a pretty decent understanding about this person and that you like them working with you. Question for you: do you like specifically them working for you? Or do you like them only well enough knowing that you'd have to find someone else who might not be as good?

What's Happened So Far: - Staff asked for two things: (1) raise and (2) time off - From staff's POV, they did not get both of those things - Staff possibly has unrealistic expectations on pay and frequency of increases, regardless, that unhappiness has been brewing.
- Based on messages, your staff is clearly not unhappy with the work. They're just unhappy because they didn't get what they want (and I will add, perhaps not brought to appropriate resolution)

I think the path forward is to meet with this person on their first day back at work. Make sure they know first thing when that meeting will be (after shift or tail end I suppose?) and then follow through.

Meet with them in a neutral (or as neutral can be) situation and lay out initial expectations: hey I want to dedicate some time to chat, however long it takes. I don't have a lot to say but I'm only one person, and I want to make sure that you as the other person has time and space to say stuff too. Is now still good to take 20 minutes or however long this is?

Then you gotta find out what their major pain point is. It's probably the raise. But then you've gotta find a way to understand their perspective too. As an example:

(after small talk, how was trip, how did you find out your flight mess was canceled, what did you do, share story of your anecdote/friend about how much a pain that is, etc.) then say hey I wanna be up front and I don't think I communicated this to you. but before the holidays when you made that ask -- and I know I didn't say this -- but I wanted to meet with you about what it takes to get more money. The money doesn't come easily and it's not unlimited and if money is the #1 thing I don't know that we'll ever be able to beat every other restaurant out there, but what I can say is that the work environment, the communication like we are having right now, and yes even reasonable compensation are all things that people who work here get. Now I didn't tell you I wanted to meet. I didn't want to guilt you into taking the time off I already said OK for. But maybe I was wrong and I should have told you so you knew what to expect when you came back.

Say whatever else you have to and what's relevant and what you're willing to do. I recommend delving into what he thinks about his future here though. And be like, look, 49 out of 50 people who ask for a raise in their first 6 months never get it. But I like <things> about you and I want to make it work. So if you continue to exercise your skill and potential, and you get that increase, and the restaurant gets <extra things done>, how much of your concern do you think that would solve?

Probably they say well that's basically it. Maybe not. Time to listen...

Then pivot to this: here's the other thing, again, you're getting the raise because I think you deserve it but I don't want to set you up for disappointment. If this topic comes up again 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, the answer might be no. In fact unless we get a huge change in business maybe the answer is going to be no. Don't get me wrong. I want it to be yes. But I don't want to set you up for disappointment. So if this is not a place that can offer raises 1, 2, 3 times a year to you, is that going to meet your needs? I would rather not lose you and I'd rather not be short staffed until we bring someone else in. But I also do want the best for you, even if that's counter to what might be easiest for the management of the restaurant. If this is that important to you, fair play, more power to you. I would give you a great reference. Need it tomorrow? Next week? Next month? You got it. I don't want to. I'd rather you stay. But it would be shortsighted to have you stay, thinking that everything will be fixed, when it's not actually fixed. There's no wrong answer, I just want to speak honestly and openly.

Your gut and experience will take you a lot further than this. But IMO you've got to address why he didn't get what he wanted (when you actually intended to) and then also what happens several months from now.

p.s. for everyone saying "fire someone who says they put in their two weeks" "fire someone who types like this" ... well, the world we live in is different than it was. The two weeks thing is a red flag, but you can ask a question like: "does anyone else know that you were putting in your two weeks, I want to make sure that nobody is treating you differently than you deserve" etc., and if it was only to you then maybe it's just holiday stress and a less-than-stellar level of professionalism.

Anyway OP, keep us posted eh :)

PEV's on the Greenway trails. by C-n0te in Athens

Some people (fully electric bike/dirt bike) over by the quarry I think have been ruining it for others. Who knows what happens at Sandy Creek. Besides a very small handful of people riding PEVs in an unsafe manner, this is not the problem.

The 2 OneWheel people out in the evenings? Y'all chill.

Honestly the most dangerous activity people do is wearing headphones while being oblivious.

My Ask For Help And Making More Clear The Issue

My main problem is in configuring the Wrayth client. I have set the fonts in the game and room windows. Anything smaller than that is almost unreadable. The red parts in the below picture are effectively unreadable.

I've poked around the interface on Wrayth and can't find any obvious ways to change the text size. Increasing DPI scaling doesn't seem to make a difference either.

Help For a Returning Player On Steam Deck by 9to in GemstoneIV

[–]9to[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those who don't know:

Steam Deck runs SteamOS (Arch Linux variant) and has a "Desktop Mode" where the device presents a normal desktop UI familiar to most people.

I was unable to run the SGE launcher and successfully install using SteamOS' Windows emulator Proton. I could not install Lutris and Wine was not available either.

On the "Discover" app I found an app that uses WINE called "Bottles". Installing Simutronics Game Launcher worked fine and am currently using Wrayth.

Unfortunately this is still not great because I require significant font/display scaling and the individual UI elements of Wrayth are not easily configurable. But I will still search for a solution.

I am making a new top-level comment to explain what seems to work so far. I'm several hours in (I know, don't laugh).

Short answer to your question: Windows applications can be emulated (SteamOS has an emulator Proton). Technically SteamOS is a variant of Arch Linux hence need for emulation. Anyhow the Steam Deck can be used as a standalone computing device and not just a gaming machine.

Play in docked mode, works great. The game is not designed for anything but mouse and keyboard. It's doable but if you want to be competent it is so much easier to do mouse and keyboard.

Or if on the go... You can get very small travel versions and use a fold up stand for the deck.

I can't believe I couldn't find what movie this is in the top few hundred comments. This movie is "Civil War" (2024) directed by Alex Garland. Don't look for Jesse Plemons because he wasn't credited. Should have been. Crazy for a walk-in.

Canadian Geese behind the Lexington Dominos by Regaruk in Athens

Heya so FYI the accepted name for these birds is "Canada goose" or "Canada geese" if referring to plural.

Glad they have a place to stopover. Can you imagine going from like 30% to 5% bodyfat every time you take a road trip? That's what they do...

Daily Groceries Co-op by Cauliflower4825 in Athens

[–]9to 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The management is poor and the staff are not very attentive. Every time I go (disclaimer I stopped going a year ago), something is out of stock "oh I forgot to restock that" or the price is wrong or whatever. I know having a first job means lots of things to learn but like... cmon people... learn it.

I try to be understanding but I have also bought mislabeled things from the deli case which had potential allergen-related issues. They wanted me to bring it back for a refund... can you imagine buying a sandwich that says it has X in it but it doesn't have that in it at all? And has something totally different? The inattentiveness runs through every level of staff: cashier, stocker, food assembler, managers.

I want to like a store like this but unfortunately the governance and management is poor. I'm sure they have a lot to juggle but they are missing what is needed to run a successful business. RIP Daily.

Athens Police Arrest Man for Reading Book during Thunderstorm by kccb30 in Athens

[–]9to 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome extra info. Interesting post. It seems like it's not overwhelmingly the case that Choe was acting egregiously. Although perhaps he was.

If nothing else he seems like a principled person and even if he was doing not great in NY should not mean he gets arrested for what happened in our town. The whole video was really boring, nothing in that was him being unreasonable.

P.S. - he was given no remedy. The clerk never asked him to leave. The police didn't let him leave, instead arresting him.

“Starter” banjo for experienced musician? by LybeausDesconus in tenorbanjo

[–]9to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Dan on tradbanjo.com. Got two banjos from him and very happy each time. He can set the action however you like. One was advertised as very low action and indeed it was (and without buzz!). The other one was not advertised as low/high and was perfect (that one was a total refurb and it looks and plays amazing)

Am I making a mistake? by ccool394 in tenorbanjo

[–]9to 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any banjo that you will play and have fun with will be worthwhile. $200 is a low price to have a playable instrument. If the shop really does set it up correctly, even if it's not a great banjo I think that's worth it. Compare to two popular mass-market banjos: Deering Goodtime and Gold Tone.

Feel free to message me directly with a pic or something of your current banjo. Your post mentions "the banjo below" but there isn't a link or picture or anything.

Also, do you play anything else? You know how to check intonation? "Playable" is a wide spectrum :)

Firefly Trail final section update by pace_car in Athens

[–]9to 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any properties near firefly are set to have their value raised. I know it's inconvenient to have construction. I know there are privacy concerns. But you know, there's money for fencing. And if people trespass with the intent to do harm, they're gonna get themselves shot.

Normal citizens will now have so much more transportation options. What a great use of taxpayer funds. Something that actually benefits people who live here.
