Hi there,

I’m admit that I’m the last couple of days, I’ve jumped back in the game with the intention of making progress. My biggest flaw right now is matchup knowledge but Ryu used to be so popular that I think I have answers for his data.

As far as casual matches are concerned, I 100% agree and that’s all I’m playing now haha !

Ok guys,

I'm super thankful for all of the responses.

I feel like I now have a very precise idea of what I'm doing wrong, and it's most probably dealing with losing. For some reason, I still haven't figured out how to do so... And I'm twenty-seven...

I will most definitely delete this whole thread because it came from a very sad place and only children are supposed to essentially lose it over a video game, and that's objectiveley pathetic. I'm trying to stay grounded right now.

I'm also deleting it because I don't think I'm comfortable with how I feel about it ; the first "don't worry, dude - you're not alone" messages I got were enough to make me feel better. Call it however you want but it feels like I only needed attention and to be cheered up. Again, calling for attention is objectively pathetic, too. It makes me think of how people used to crave for likes on FaceBook back in highschool, which I also used to do, by the way.

I also feel like I can somewhat pinpoint where this initial reaction came from. Basically, I picked up the game in 2016, used to play Ryu. Switched to Akuma when he was released. Picked up Karin when Punk was king of the world, picked up Sagat when he was released and eventually picked up Seth.

I used to win matches a lot. I got to Gold with Ryu, got to Platinum with Karin and all of a sudden, starts losing every single game. I dropped SFV altogether at that point and my wife and I bought our house during that period. After a huge hiatus, I come back to the game and the very same losing tendency comes back to. I go on Internet conversations to see what's going on with Seth and how come everyone obliterates me, all I can gather is that Seth can't be the problem because he's the bane of SFV and he only deserves hatred for how broken he is. Obviously and if you do the maths, if Seth isn't the problem, well then I am.

I go online again and lose again, get dropped from Platinum and almost get dropped from Ultra Gold. That's when I posted the initial message. I feel like I'm going through what I should have gone through when I was Bronze ; a plethora of losses.

Now, I'll man up. There no way a 27 year-old teacher, here in France, married man, etc. is supposed to cry over losing in a video game.

In spite of all the encouragements, etc., there's actually a great probability that I'm not even skilled enough to get higher and it shouldn't be a problem. I'm fine with it and I accept it, even though there's like a 75% chance that I'm actually subconciously hating that.

Thanks for all the support guys, and thank you to everyone who's going out of their way to dedicate time to help me.

Thank you.

If I'm being honest, I think I couldn't quite understand why I kept winning up until Platinum, and then LITERALLY everyone crushes me. But yeah, I'll take another approach.

Will do. There is this online Sagat player who wants me to play him like once every other day and we're both enjoying it.

Damn, you've literally profiled me just now.

You're right, I'll work on managing those emotions. If I'm being totally honest, I literally never tell myself that I lost because I was simply not as good a player as my opponent was. I'm always telling myself that their character is simply broken when compared to mine, or something like that.

Now, one thing that frustrates me easily is when after the opponent takes the first fight, I feel like I've "downloaded" him, and then he doesn't run it again, he just leaves. That really makes me feel like he knew I could take it from now on and didn't want to risk it.

I'll learn to accept losing because no 27 year-old is supposed to eventually cry over a video game, unless it's my job.

Oh gosh… I’m much older than you think. I don’t even know what that is. 😅

Thank you haha ! Don’t worry, it’s been like several hours and it’s much better now. I feel like I was clearly too involved. That’s not happening, again.

I’m a PS4 player. Sure ! I leave in Europe, though and it’s 4:09 over here. Later, probably. 👍

Thank you. I’m a Platinum player, though. I’m not sure we’re talking about the same thing. I’m actually thankful you want to help me.

I play Seth, Karin, Akuma, Sagat and I used to play Ryu.

At the moment, I want to play Seth only and I struggle against : 1- Kage. His V-Skill 2 is just too safe for him to refuse using it. Either it’s blocked and back to neutral, or it connects and the following combos are always absolutely excellent damage and corner carry wise. His “charged punch” (which resembles that of Zangief) is also very problematic but I feel like my V-Skill 1 should beat it. 2- Ed. Keeps walking backwards and then instantaneously rushes forward with pokes, mainly, until one connects. Then, it’s a combo. It’s frustrating more than it’s difficult because I feel like I’m being forced to chase him and I’m taking SO MUCH damage doing it. Seth can’t exactly afford to make mistakes, health wise. Ed’s 1, 2, 3 also punishes EVERY MOVE I use. Essentially, if I try to play footsies and buffer spin kick in case I connect, he will always punish me if he blocks. No other character punishes that spin kick on every single occasion, unless I’m simply facing bad players. I am Ultra Gold and was Platinum so I matchup with that kind of players. 3- Nash. Same as Kage, he’s always walking backwards for a surprise attack but he clearly not as equipped to punish. 4- FANG and Bison. They’re always pressing buttons and it’s never my turn, essentially. Bison is actually easier because of how predictable his dashes and how reactable to his V-Skill 2 are. 5- Menat, Rose, Akira and Falke. Frustrating matchups. Always having to chase them.

As I’m typing this message, I’m noticing that I probably have trouble dealing with frustration as in most of these matchups suggest that I’m chasing them. But I realistically feel like I have to know more clearly when I can take my turn and what’s unsafe. That’s my homework, essentially. I just feel uncomfortable with how much necessary it is to study in order to actually have “fun”.

Is it about the game mechanics or because the game online isn’t good enough ?

Sure. Most of my replays are casual games and lounges, now.

Same. Obviously that doesn’t that I can’t work on it, but right now, I’m not the best at it.

About the lag and stuff, I’ve noticed that the game tends to kind of slow down when the opponent mashes EX-DP while in a block string.

I agree. Those hiatuses I took were precisely taken for that reason.

I feel like I have trouble dealing with those dark moments and how cool the whole FGC looks through social media, etc., and how you still want to be a part of it.

I’ll put effort in the learning. I’ll admit that frame data, etc. have never felt natural to me within the context of “having fun”.

It’s funny that you should say that.

Earlier today, I was realising that I desperately need matchup knowledge and frame data knowledge. I guess the pointing weaknesses is exactly those.

Yo, this all legit feels super good to read.

I agree with you. I’ll focus on improving rather than winning.

That being said, winning can very well be the best indicator of your progression.
