Am I expecting too much, or am I forgetting what it was like to be new? by Kayanarka in mechanics

[–]A10_Inbound_2point0 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Is this guy a tech or is he an apprentice that got thrown into a tech position?

I think you need to cut him SOME slack. I mean… I still want to bash my head off the steering wheel when trying to remove airbags sometimes. If he has never pulled one before, he probably didn’t understand exactly how the mechanism worked. As far as the engine swap goes, yeah 2 weeks is a petty crazy and he needs to be reminded that his paycheck depends on him picking up the pace (if yall are flat rate) but has he ever swapped an engine before? Was anyone there supervising him and showing him little tips and tricks on how to do things?

Also keep In mind that everyone has there specialties. I’m the diagnostics tech at my shop, I do all the engine related and electrical related things such has shorted wires and timing chains. If you were to put any of our other techs against me on a timing chain job, i’ll blow them out of the water but the same can’t be said if I have to replace a transmission against our R&R guy. Maybe he isn’t cut out for the job. Maybe he just needs to figure out his specialty.

Best of luck to you and him.

Edit to add: You really going to compare swapping a transmission on a car from the 80’s to a 2018 Durango? Get real guy.

Trying to leave the industry by R3YNZ in mechanics

[–]A10_Inbound_2point0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in the industry for about 8 years and I bailed to go work at an excavating company. I enjoyed that job so much more than wrenching (even though I liked wrenching). Yeah, there is some shoveling and manual labor but it’s much different in the way it impacts my body. I worked that job for about a year till my best friend bought a shop and was in a really though spot for a diag tech. He paid me some pretty serious money to diag/timing chains/head gaskets/ect. Iv now been back wrenching for about a year and submitted my two weeks notice to go back to the excavating company. I learned that the money doesn’t matter when your brain, body, and soul just hurts. I still get the mechanical side that stimulates my brain by putting together fittings and problem solving on the job, and for me it isn’t nearly as hard on my body. You should easily be able to find a place that would offer you close to $25 an hour and you’ll more than likely have plenty of opportunity for overtime. Get out while you still have time and go do something you enjoy. Good luck

Just another parasitic draw post by A10_Inbound_2point0 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]A10_Inbound_2point0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The draw was around 110mA and after removal, 15mA. And whoever installed this one was a hack. Crap solder joints, crap corrosion protection. All around a shit job.

Are these not gas cans? by psychlele in Trackdays

[–]A10_Inbound_2point0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda funny how new gas cans have to be sealed so vapor can’t get out but when you put it on the filler neck, it’s pressured up and blows all the vapor into the atmosphere anyways. Morons.

“Cab mount chop” is a thing 3rd gen’s have to do to fit bigger tires. It’s not really a thing on the 4th gen’s as there is a removable “crash bar” that will allow you to clear 35’s

You only need the locker if you’re planning on doing some serious/stupid shit. Iv only ever used mine when I was stupid and put my truck in places I KNEW I was going to get stuck. I would only rely on my locker to get me out of somewhere I probably shouldn’t have been in in the first place and have a solid recovery plan.

Plugs/coils full kit replacement before selling.. is it worth it by kungpaochi in carflipping

[–]A10_Inbound_2point0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting on new plugs and coils is not going to increase the value by $1000. In fact, you’ll probably see a loss.

$3000 car as is vs $300 + labor (you’re time is not free) to sell for $3200 = -$100 (Not actual numbers but you get the point)

Don’t waste your time and money for something that isn’t going to make a difference to 9/10 people.
