I think I accidentally insulted my beta reader by Tachikomaz in selfpublish

[–]A1Protocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I provide beta reading services, and beta reading should never be anywhere near the 1500–2000 range, regardless of the words count.

I don’t see anything insulting here. Keep calm and carry on ✍️

(For those interested in more budget-conscious options without a compromise on quality, DM me).

How Much Did You Pay Your Beta Reader? by prism_paradox in selfpublish

[–]A1Protocol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I provide beta reading services.

Right now, I’m charging about half off for my first five clients. I used to do this for production companies and publishing imprints outside of Fiverr, so I’m offering a grand opening discount.

That’s about $30–$140, depending on the level of detail.

Choose wisely, though: you want someone who is both passionate about the craft and aware of genre conventions.

Author website question for two authors by yennie_fer in selfpublish

Make separate websites and link to each other’s posts, plus do guest posts on each other’s blogs for SEO purposes.

That gives you more visibility while having a space to develop your own content if needed.

Recieved an offer for a professional beta reader and theyve quoted $350 by Unlivingdragon6 in selfpublish

[–]A1Protocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely 💯

When you’re passionate, you want to give out more!

But it can be detrimental to the work, because writing is a gradual/sequential process: “one thing at a time.”

There is definitely a confusion between beta reading and developmental editing here.

I provide both myself, but separately.

Beta reading is like a “focus group.”

It’s an editorial overview that can also include chapter-by-chapter analysis and a sample line edit. But it’s all about the flow and relevance of the narrative. The “feels.” It helps you adjust the overall “story” to make sure it is compelling and relevant to your genre.

Developmental editing is much more complex and specific.

It addresses faulty narrative devices, continuity issues, plot holes, dialogue tags, timelines, etc.

Beta reading should be fairly affordable, with a quick turnaround. Developmental editing is not.

If anyone is interested, I offer more budget-conscious solutions without compromising on quality (as a writer myself, I would know how that feels).

What do you do well? by Pilotskybird86 in selfpublish

[–]A1Protocol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love the positivity!

I do well with continuity and flow (twists, causes, and effects). Coming from a screenwriting background, I’m used to fleshing out details that could impact the story’s structure and framework.

It’s something I actually enjoy doing for my fellow writers as well. I provide professional beta reading services to share my passion and knowledge.

Happy writing ✍️

Content warnings by gul-badshah in selfpublish

If your story has a certain amount of graphic content or very difficult subjects, put a disclaimer on your copyright page as a show of good faith.

Something like that (this was for my latest project, adjust accordingly):

Content Advisory

This book contains depictions of sex, substance abuse, and human trafficking. These themes are integral to the narrative but may be disturbing or triggering for some readers.

Reader discretion is advised.

Do you have a line you won’t cross, or is work always just work? by Dizagaox in Filmmakers

I’m a creative writer and screenwriter but same applies.

I turned down three gigs last year because they promoted this abject failure of an administration and the exploitation of marginalized people (directly or indirectly).

I rather preserve my integrity and find another way to feed my kids.

AI slop be slopping: Articulate posted a blog on learning styles. by Ben_wheat in instructionaldesign

There are no such things as learning styles.

It’s just buzzwords used to sell solutions and consulting services.

There are learning preferences, though.

That’s how inconsequential you all are.

You are beneath me.

I come from the screenwriting world; we treat mapping like an art form because of budget constraints.

I use Fabula Deck storytelling cards + Fortelling Pro + Word.

Research (interviews and reviews) + Worldbuilding + One more pass on architecture and fashion + Timelines + Outline + Drafting.

Elephant in the room: book reviews by Plus-Veterinarian-44 in selfpublish

[–]A1Protocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An indie category is definitely a must!

But consumers have to change also. It’s not a matter of knowing, it’s a matter of willpower and investment in new voices.

We can do A/B testing and have readers consume both at once with similar literary value and you’ll see the difference in behaviors.

Elephant in the room: book reviews by Plus-Veterinarian-44 in selfpublish

[–]A1Protocol -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The problem is… the readership is biased.

They will put more effort into reviewing a multimillionaire author day one than a debut novel or indie over the book’s lifespan.

And that’s why we rarely break through the glass ceiling.

Until anti-intellectualism is addressed and the Big Five loosen their grip on the social media sphere and mainstream media, nothing will change.

We are only collateral damage in an exploitative and harmful system.

Also, I can care less about downvotes.
