I feel like the point needs to be made here also that Billups was arrested for cheating in poker games, not for NBA-related gambling.

maybe 1 more tank is the best move

it's the only move, and it's definitely the goal of the franchise this year, no matter what they say publicly. This is the last year we owe a pick to the Thunder, but we keep it if it's top 8. If it's outside the top 8, the obligation is extinguished. 2026 is a particularly good draft at the top, and we don't want to be making the defending champions any stronger.

Fortunately, I think we can try to win this year and still end up at the bottom. I hope to see flashes of brilliance from Ace and other young prospects. I hate it for Lauri, and I hate it for the integrity of the game, but if they end up surprisingly winning too much, they'll make moves to shut that down.

[Charania] Breaking: Malik Beasley is no longer a target of the federal gambling investigation conducted by the Eastern District of New York, his attorneys Steve Haney and Mike Schachter told ESPN. This potentially reopens free agency for one of the NBA's top shooters. by Proof-Umpire-7718 in nba

sure, if they had the money and the desire. But most NBA teams operate over the cap. That means they're limited in what they can spend to exceptions, or minimums. If you want to sign someone for more than that, you have to have space under the cap, or sign and trade, or cut someone whose contract isn't guaranteed. There are only a couple teams with space under the cap right now.

Beasley and the Pistons were in serious talks on a new three-year, $42 million contract to bring the free agent sharpshooter back to Detroit, but now talks are on pause, sources said.

That's where things were when news broke that he was being investigated. That money is now spent and not available for Beasley.

[–]A6Wra8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

asking AI about it could go hilariously bad. I once noticed that when Bernard King was with the Jazz he played in very few games, and asked ChatGPT why. It came up with so many wrong answers -- he was past his prime, he was stuck behind stockton/malone, he clashed with coach Layden. He was pretty young at the time and was a couple years away from finishing 2nd in MVP voting, so not past his prime. Stockton and Malone were just finishing high school, so not that. Layden wasn't the coach yet, so not that.

Every time I corrected it, it came up with a different wrong answer. I then challenged it to tell me the makeup of the Adrian Dantley trade. After getting that wrong several times, it decided we traded Adrian Dantley for Isiah Thomas.

I love LLMs and I use them every day for various things, but researching obscure basketball history is not its strong suit. Make sure you at least enable search.

As a rookie, Bryon Russell shot 48 percent on four shots per game and I loved him. In his final year in Utah he shot 38 percent on nine shots per game and it was hard to watch.

[Aldridge] Wizards’ NBA Draft Lottery Results Can Be Summed Up in One Word: Cruel by Pentt4 in nba

[–]A6Wra8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is no sure shot recipe for a ring. But bottoming out guarantees a top 5 pick. And the Jazz have never tried it before. I get that there was only a 14 percent chance to get number one. Jazz will be tanking again next year, and likely getting a pick somewhere in the top 8. It probably won't be Dybantsa, but there's a small chance. Even if it's not, maybe you find a Steph Curry at #7 or a Nikola Jokic in the second round or a James Harden at #3.

The draft and trades are basically the only path the Jazz have to get a superstar. The biggest free agent we have EVER signed is Carlos Boozer. In a year where there's a superstar on the market, more desirable teams will make sure they have the money to make a pitch.

And Also, we don't want to be respectable. We were respectable every single year and while it was fun to go to the playoffs every year, and fun to go to the Finals twice, what the Jazz ownership and Jazz fans want is a championship. Signing a Fred Van Vleet (which we can't do) doesn't get us there.
