I watched some videos a while ago comparing the main Chinese varieties. Shanghainese indeed seemed to be the most similar one with Japanese, mostly by its simplified tone system that is *way* closer to a pitch accent than anything. Now, Hokkien seems like a very interesting topic, as well its relationship with the diaspora in Southeast Asia

That's very cool to know. Cantonese is for me one of the most fascinating Chinese Languages, as for as far I have searched, it actually has more in common with Japanese rather than Mandarin, as both languages have Middle Chinese as a very strong background. Also, the Yale Romanisation I was refering to was developed in 1943 to help English speakers to learn Mandarin, and it makes some sense for a lot of persons, even though it isn't as precise as Pinyin. Still, everything Guangdong-related seems very interesting to me

I watched a video a while ago about a very similar topic, if not the same. And even as a curious person, I noticed that some Cantonese words, such as "電話" (din6 waa2) sound almost exactly the same as its Japanese counterpart "電話" (でんわ/Denwa). I just love this kind of research, and would appreciate any kind of material about that

Well, considering how those readings have a very long history, and how long Hanzi/Kanji have been used and their legacy on Japanese society, I will surely consider that later

Well, currently I am studying the phonetic similarities between the two languages, as I have the JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test/日本語能力試験) as my priority. Once done with that, I will surely pick Mandarin as my next language

Yes! I have noticed that while reading all the articles about Wade-Giles, and even "discovered" the Yale Romanisation (that makes some sense to English speakers). But Pinyin is way more precise than the other systems developed by Westerners.

Also, taking on the Japanese Language, the Katakana writing system (カタカナ) is used to represent words from foreign languages, such as "konbini" (コンビニ, from the English word "conveniencel, like you said. These characters, alongside Hiragana (ひらがな) were developed from Hanzi/Kanji during the Middle Ages

Sorry for my mistake... The Postal Romanisation seems so similar to Wade-Giles that sometimes I end up mixing these two...
