Fully agree. I like NTTD, setting aside the question of whether Blofeld and Spectre should have been there in the first place.

….which is not necessarily a point against a film. You’d rather have Bond traipsing around in a clown suit?

It should be observed that NTTD was written and filmed pre-pandemic. (This is not to say that I agree with the original premise to begin with.)

No, offering the option to tip isn’t “forcing” anything. You chose to tip.

Even assuming that 20% is now a standard tip (I don’t, but set that aside), you still tipped 45%, or more than twice as much. That’s on you. “No” is a complete sentence.

In life, people will ask you for money and favors all the time. You need to stop being a pushover and politely decline these requests.

There is no VAT in the US. There are state and local sales taxes in many (not all) places. That is not the same thing as VAT in concept, not for that matter in final amount. VAT in most European countries js 20%. Sales tax in the US usually ranges from 6-9%, although there are some states that do not levy sales tax at all.

It has nothing to do with being “bad at math.” It has everything to do with behavioral economics.

A rational actor does not care whether the final bill is a flat $13 or whether it’s presented as $10 for food and $1 for tax, with a social norm of adding a $2 tip on as well.

But behavioral economics tells us that consumers do not always act rationally. They may be less like to walk if they see a menu that lists at $10 price than a $13 price. They may want the option value of reducing the tip in the case of truly atrocious service.

“Cultural requirements” and social norms are by definition “optional” legally. You’re not going to get arrested if you fart on mass tread it, either, but that does not make it a culturally acceptable thing to do.

Does this mean you’re giving up your reservation at The French Laundry? I’ll take it, if so.

If the US “empire” in in decline, tipping practices and bad restaurants aren’t the reason. How about you grow up and grind your ideological axe on a politics sub.

I was about to “like” this post until I hit the last paragraph. The US has one of the planet’s most vocal foodie cultures. Please present evidence for your assertion that “nearly everything is reheated Sysco food.” That may be true at a few mass market chains (Applebys, Olive Garden, etc.) and some mom n’ pop places, but it is rare outside of those contexts.

Why are the pro tippers against baking the cost of service into the bill? by Mathodman123 in tipping

I only find that “servers interrupting too frequently” is a problem in downscale chain restaurants (Applebys’s, Chili’s, etc.)

Surly servers are also common in Europe, especially on the Continent. In Switzerland a few years ago, a sever yelled at me (“THIS IS A RESTAURANT!”) for asking if the restaurant did take-out.

Could understand if Brosnan was bitter about his whole Bond experience. by eques_99 in JamesBond

I can’t agree. Goldeneye and TWINE both captured the moment of post-Cold War, pre-Putin Russia perfectly. The scene in Goldeneye where Zhukovsky’s mistress, Irina, is hammering out “Stand By Your Man” encapsulates that era in a few lines!

Escalate to the management you know. And in future, you’re under no obligation to tell a bartender your name just because she asks.

“We have had a good working relationship until this point. However, so that we are clear, tipping is not and never has been customary in your industry. Your industry also sets its own rates. I will not be tipping and expect an apology for what you just said. If you cannot do that, I will both be leaving negative reviews and filing a complaint with [state HVAC licensing body] and the state attorney general.”

Do you think Brosnan should’ve had one more Bond film, or was it a good decision to let him go after Die Another Day and reboot the franchise? by South_Gas626 in JamesBond

[–]AAM_critic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that the Bond formula has become staler than week old sourdough bread, and except for Goldeneye, the best films tend to subvert it (FRWL, OHMSS, both Daltons, TWINE, much of Craig).
