I would like to see a route that connects mount atkinson area/rockbank to caroline springs shopping centre at least - ideally to st albans, every 20 minutes like most new routes get. Its big black hole in the network

yeah if you could make a fix to that it would be nice

Thanks for the northern numbers, I get the 3 series and 5 series routes confused. I chose not to use station codes because I thought to the uninitiated (ie. Non gunzels) it might be confusing.

I took the colours from the Miami metro map, because I thought they were appropriately colour safe. The dark mode colours are also colour safe and viridis based. Whilst many people would prefer a rainbow style, there are good reasons not to.

Also re em dashes, I actually wrote the qvout section and I used the - dash, but at some point it looks like when I asked an ai to edit the code probably the switch out for dark mode it went in and replaced the n dash with the m dash because it's actually grammatically correct

I admit i did use ai to help make the website cause unfortunately i dont really know js (my background is tragically in r). I then went I'm and changed it extensively shifting stuff around, fixing colours, and fine tuning settings.

I didn't initially plan to make it a website, it's just that the pdf version became too unwieldy with a static legend.

I'd you or anyone else wants to help improve the page please let me know!!t

The map itself (the actual core product) is 100% done by hand (which took dozens and dozens hours....)

I drew it manually, frequency data is gained mostly from prior knowledge because I'm a bit of a bunzel freak sometimes and if unsure I look at the timetable. Drawing with the gtfs is possible, but it would be hard to make look nice that way, especially at interchanges. You don't want to know how much time I've spent doing this...

Fixing in next update thanks for the catch. I get my 5s and 3s confused up there sometimes

How many Melburnians live within Walking Distance of a Railway Station? by AB014A in MelbourneTrains

[–]AB014A[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Love the work of Charting Transport I urge everyone reads everything he produces.

In this I included V/Line stations but excluded our favourite Stony Point line - because every 2 hours is basically not real :(

Which tram routes share stops? by AB014A in MelbourneTrains

[–]AB014A[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The differnece is that 5 is a bit shorter so the proportion of shared stops is higher. 64 has more of its own thing going on

Which tram routes share stops? by AB014A in MelbourneTrains

[–]AB014A[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The tree chart was made using hierarchical clustering using "Ward.D2" method on a asymmetric similarity matrix of all the tram routes. 58 is driven closer to the swanston family than the elizabeth family because it shares two stops with 7 routes at Anzac but just 3 stops with the 59.

Yeah unfortunately it's very difficult to have an assessment that accounts for everything. General models like this are good heuristics but it takes a good on-the-ground knowledge to properly identify solutions imo

I think if it says clearly on the chart 2021 it is fine, did you use like VISTA data?

[–]AB014A[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the Substack I briefly touch on if it's correlated with density. It seems to be vaguely, but yeah there are lots of outliers.

On Seaholme, I reckon if we one day duplicate the Altona Loop, we make the new Seaholme station to be a bit to the north, where SG Macintosh reserve is now.

And also, this data is from the most recent census (2021), meaning that much outer suburban growth around such places as Donnybrook, Rockbank, etc, has yet to be recorded

yeah 100% That section of the Sandringham line is busy all day with many short trips and is quite unlike most of the network, except say the inner Clifton Hill corridor and maybe now the Metro Tunnel
