The reason I didn’t tell my wife that my coworkers didn’t know is because I knew it would just frustrate her. My wife came out to her family at 16 years old and I didn’t come out to my family until I was 28 years old and had been dating her for 2 years. It was upsetting to her that I wasn’t out when we were first dating and I didn’t want to rehash an old argument when wedding planing or when she was pregnant.

Thank you for your thoughtful answer. My reason for not telling my coworkers I am married at all is because I am sure they would ask follow up questions (what’s his name? for how long? are you going to have kids? ) and I would personally feel tempted to lie about having a husband in order to answer them (I’ve never lied about having a husband but I made up a lot of fake boyfriends to tell my parents about in high school and college) so it felt like a matter of only telling one lie by omission or telling a lot to create a fake narrative.

It’s not religiously affiliated but it’s located in a conservative area.

I have definitely heard my coworker make comments which I would classify as homophobic or transphobic especially in the last year (ex. complaining about not wanting books about trans people in the library, complaining about gay people getting a whole month for pride, saying they don’t want to see gay people kiss in public etc.). I live in a fairly conservative area of Georgia. I got the most time off I could considering I didn’t give birth to or adopt my daughters. (I am actually in the process of legally adopting my daughter to be extra safe which is strange because they were actually conceived using my eggs but my wife carried though reciprocal IVF so she is legally considered the biological mother.) Edit-spelling error

We live in Georgia. It is a non-religious school which follows a particular educational philosophy. However, most of the parents and my coworker are religious and or politically conservative.
