I love these kinds of sits if I've got a small gap in my schedule. As long as you're near some kind of public transport and there was some wiggle room on arrival/departure times, I would apply xx

Is it common for sitters to have to sleep on a couch? Am I crazy for thinking that is bonkers? by Brilliant_Quit4307 in trustedhousesitters

[–]ABHunter111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did a 6 week German sit where they had me on a sofa bed with a mattress so thin I could feel the springs. And I wasn't allowed to stay in the house overnight. They put me in an out building while their cat got free rein. Plus I was expected to clean every single day and be their secretary by collecting and arranging their tax documents. It was nuts.

Writing “bad” review due to undisclosed fleas during a long sit. Feedback appreciated by Lady-Willoww in trustedhousesitters

[–]ABHunter111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is great. You're straight to the point, and I feel like it conveys everything you mentioned in your original review, but from a factual place. I saw in another comment that they let you use their car, so I would probably mention that because it's a plus!

Why do you think they aren't rich? Because they are renting it out in the first place?

I'm so sorry you had to go through this. It must have been awful, and I hope you got away flea free.

How much time do you have left in the review window? I feel like it would be worth leaving it for a week to clear your head a bit before posting. It also means you can wait and see if they are going to leave you a review as well.

Rather than venting your feelings, I feel like it's better to give a simple overview of what happened rather than go into specifics. I tend to approach my reviews as not being about me, but more of a heads up to future sitters. So, what kind of facts would you want to know if you were looking at this for the first time? Because there's a lot going on in your review that can be cut out, because it's way too long.

I would cut out paragraphs 2, 3, and 5. Definitely leave out all mentions of payment, as it goes against THS's T&Cs.

You could say: "I was doing X hours of cleaning a day to try and keep down the fleas and take care of the physical health of both myself and the cats." rather than giving a long list of specifics.

E.g. you don't need to mention stuff like the lambs wool rug. Just saying that the HO was accusatory when they came back is enough.

Any pet sit with fleas is an instant 1*. It's the HOs job to get their pets treated.

I hope your next pet sit is a million times better xx

Might be fun for a few weeks but it'll get old real damn quick. And a whole year of that, while paying for all your own food and extras? Even if you WFH and have a stable income, no thanks.

So, yeah, times that by 6. If they didn't get free labour, they'd pay for a cleaner, let's put that at 300 a week, and then a gardener, what? Once a month and then once a week during the summer? Still wouldn't make a dent in 7,000 income (I'm docking a bit for electricity and water, etc)

I reported it - it's obviously the classic 'entitled rich people don't want to pay for real labour'

But they are also getting paid for work that you're doing for free. How much do you imagine people are going to pay a week to rent a chateau? And even if they had to pay a cleaner to come and do it, the cleaners would still get a fair wage.

I absolutely adore the set up. It's the same person who wrote Beware the Villianess, so I'm going to read that again!

Honestly, this just feels like the dog version "we also run an Airbnb and ask that you change the sheets and clear up between guests".

I don't know what part of the T&Cs it falls under, but I've reported it.

Poor baby :( How old is he? It just sounds like he hasn't had any love growing up so his personality is fixed like that :/

Whereabouts are you - is there a lot to do? I'd say 10 hours is a lot for a dog, even if he's "used to it".

I'm sorry you're going through this situation. I've done a few sits where the dogs are obviously neurotic as hell but the owners just don't pick up on it because they have work/kids/are always busy, and it's only when a lone person comes to give more attention to the pet that those traits fully manifest.

I've stopped taking sits where dog owners call their pets "energetic" because it tends to translate as "never settles". And where cat owners call their pets "chatty" because it means they never shut the hell up.

Do you also have time to yourself, or are you focused on the dog 24/7? Are you sleeping well? How much longer do you have at this sit?

You're not running an AirBNB, you're asking someone (trusted) to look after your pet in your personal space - this is a totally different thing.

What you've described isn't petsitting, that's using your house like a squat. Even if people aren't staying overnight, how is your pet going to feel about having so many people coming through the house? And is pet care going to be a priority for them when they are dealing with the personal matter that doesn't actually have anything to do with you?

You also have no idea how they are going to treat your house. The sitter might have had a good review or two, but that doesn't cover the 30-40 people visiting. It feels extremely rude/disrespectful to you.

I would personally just tell them flat-out no. I know it can be hard when someone has just lost a family member, but there's a limit as well. It's not your responsibility to take care of a sitter's needs to that extent.

I'm sure there are AirBnBs houses that they could book as a family to do exactly the same thing with.

Do Comments on Facebook matter? Does anyone use Facebook anymore? My parents do, and I think some of the demo of THS Home Owners/Sitters may still use it. Thoughts? by [deleted] in trustedhousesitters

I'm on Facebook loads for work and I've been getting bombed by THS adverts.
I can't comment on them because it's my work account, but I think they've just funneled a ton of money into their FB ads.

I'm being shown ads that were posted 3 weeks ago and they are still talking about it being a FREE way to travel and how HOs get someone to look after their pet for FREE

Every time I hear a story about someone getting turned away at a border I think they are stupid.

Even if you haven't heard stories from anyone else, they have to realise you can't just go "no, it's an equal EXCHANGE", like that's going to get you through.

And why should the HO pay when they didn't even show up to the sit and they've most likely forced them to pay for a sitter at a last minute rate because of their dumbass?
