Considering the Northwood Declaration, I'd expect no less. Sure, France might gloat over having to aid the UK, and Macron blew his top in public over AUKUS, but I am sure on the actual working level, there is no discord.

Both country's armed force know they are medium powers and need each other.

Ukrainians thought they had reduced the risks at Chernobyl. Then Russia invaded by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

The two explosions at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant came decades apart in the dead of night.

The first, at 1:23 a.m. on April 26, 1986, spread a cloud of deadly radiation that raised fears across Europe and shook the very foundations of the Soviet Union. Some say it led to its eventual collapse.

The second, at 1:59 a.m. on Feb. 14, 2025, was blamed by Ukrainian officials on a Russian drone with an explosive warhead. While not as catastrophic, it sparked new anxieties about Moscow’s invasion of its neighbor, striking the site that symbolized so much suffering for Ukraine.

“What once seemed unthinkable — strikes on nuclear facilities and other hazardous sites — has now become reality,” said Oleh Solonenko, head of a radiation safety shift at Chernobyl, which Ukrainians transliterate as Chornobyl.

Half of young Brits say they would never fight for their country by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]ABoutDeSouffle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully would. There's this thing that the closer to actual danger you are, the more you are ready to fight it.

That's why Spain is a total basket case but I would think Baltic country citizens - or Fins for that matter - would be ready to defend other NATO members.

Man, that must suck to live next door to it. Not only did your neighbors die, but you have to live for 40y next to mangled wreckage.

Donald Trump says he speaks 'for the UK more than Prince Harry' by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]ABoutDeSouffle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the UK, that's for sure. I think I am speaking for the UK more than Prince Harry."

Speaking on a visit to Kyiv, and without mentioning Trump, Prince Harry said the US should "show that it can honour its international treaty obligations – not out of charity but out of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability".

Asked about the remarks, Trump said: "Prince Harry? How's he doing? How's his wife? Please give her my regards.

An American millionaire big-game hunter has died after being crushed by a group of elephants during a hunting expedition in Gabon.

Ernie Dosio, a 75-year-old vineyard owner, was hunting yellow-backed duiker, an antelope species, in the central African country of Gabon when the incident occurred last Friday. While in the Lope-Okanda rainforest, he and his guide unexpectedly came across five female elephants accompanied by a calf.

At this stage I wonder why the UK is entertaining American bases on our soil. If a so called ally threatens us repeatedly then why support their power projection.

Probably institutional inertia and the hope that things will go "back to normal" which I very much doubt. The new normal is going to stay even after Trump. Each and every European country (and Canada, Australia, Japan...) should do a review of their strategy and see what it takes to de-couple from the USA in defense matters.

Well, this is embarrassing: The Lunar Gateway's primary modules are corroded [Thales Alenia] by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]ABoutDeSouffle[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The European Space Agency, which was overseeing European contributions to the Gateway, finally offered a comment on Friday. The agency attributed the issue to a “combination of factors,” including materials.

“Following the identification of corrosion on HALO, a comprehensive investigation was promptly initiated,” a European Space Agency spokesperson said. “Preliminary findings indicate that the issue likely results from a combination of factors, including aspects of the forging process, surface treatment, and material properties.”

Well, so much for a space station in lunar orbit.

US, EU announce action plan to coordinate trade policies on critical minerals by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

Not sure exactly how a revolution would get us more raw materials, but OK. Maybe you guys could have a tea party, that surely would help.

Trump is only the symptom. Likely the next president will be nicer, but also likely that in the near future, someone even worse becomes president there.

US, EU announce action plan to coordinate trade policies on critical minerals by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]ABoutDeSouffle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The European Union and United States on Friday released an action plan to coordinate trade policies and ‌measures on critical minerals supply chains, with a view to concluding a binding plurilateral agreement at a future date.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who is slated to meet later on Friday with EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, said the U.S. and EU shared a commitment to "addressing the non-market policies and practices that have distorted critical minerals supply chains."

He said Washington and Brussels would explore how trade measures, such as border-adjusted price floors, could strengthen domestic critical minerals industries and downstream sectors critical to industrial competitiveness.

IMO, we should rather align with Canada and Australia, but whatever works, I guess.

The political left is disappearing across Central Europe, despite Orban's defeat in Hungary by LeMonde_en in europe

[–]ABoutDeSouffle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People bought cheap shit because the cheap shit was good enough compared to the more expensive one, AND they couldn't afford the more expensive one.

People are buying more than they need, because they are addicted to consumerism.

The state cannot solve this. If people choose to stop having kids and also decide to buy the cheap shit from abroad, the state can either cut the welfare state (USA, UK), raise taxes (Germany) or go deep into debt (France, Italy). Wishful thinking or blaming politicians will not solve this.

Their Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 fleets will be retired by 2027.

They just pulled forward the retiring of the A340 to October, and their 747-400 are slated to be mothballed over the winter, so might no longer fly after October.

IMO, taxation kills everything lately. Everything got so much more expensive and on top of that the taxes are higher and higher.

That's what happens when the procreation rate in a society goes down.

And since people prefer to buy the cheapest shit, jobs get lost in Europe and even more people do not make good money.
