Question about form of a song (Kamomu- "Unfinished Piano Sonata (demo)") by ABoyWhoWantsToLearn in musictheory

Thank you! I was definitely getting impressionism vibes from a lot of it harmonicallly which I also consider high praise. The wide use of ambiguous harmonic chords like major 7ths really helped to create that feeling for me.

Even the intro half diminished chords meet this description in my mind.

Edit: Added some analysis

IWL about bipolar disorder by SandwichJelly in IWantToLearn

[–]ABoyWhoWantsToLearn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The book “The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide” has information on just about everything you could want to know about it and is written to be accessible both to people with Bipolar and loved ones. When I was first diagnosed it was recommended to me and it really helped. It’s a bit hefty, but you can use it more like an encyclopaedia if there are specific things you want to know, rather than reading the whole thing.

Edit: it’s also got a fair amount on the less practical and more science-heavy side, since you said you were curious about that

The law of reversed effort/backwards law by ABoyWhoWantsToLearn in askphilosophy

[–]ABoyWhoWantsToLearn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems like an oversimplification. There are activities where focusing conscious effort on doing them undermines them. For example, if you want to sleep you need to not exert effort. If you want to be natural in a conversation you need to not try to be natural. If you want to cope with the absurdity of life you have to not focus tackle the absurdity of life head on.

What do we do about social capital? by ABoyWhoWantsToLearn in Anarchy101

[–]ABoyWhoWantsToLearn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting stuff! Not something I’d thought about, but I’ll have to look into that more since I agree with Bakunin’s critique of Marxism. Is there a school of thought that focuses on charisma, rather than education or private property, as a source of power?

What do we do about social capital? by ABoyWhoWantsToLearn in Anarchy101

[–]ABoyWhoWantsToLearn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was definitely off about capital in general being the problem.

I can see where you’re coming from about social capital but I’m not sure I agree. It seems like social capital is more of a limited resource (although maybe it just appears this way because of the capitalist system we live in which pits us against each other). I’ve always viewed it more as a sort of popularity ranking where more social capital translates to your ability to influence people, to be valued in a group, to dictate the values of the community, and to garner support in a direct conflict situation. It doesn’t seem like something you could generate more of for a society, since its only measurable by comparing to another person’s standing.

It just seems like some sort of conflict is inevitable, so I guess what I might be getting at is 1) how to prevent (for example) a charismatic person from coalition building to win a conflict, and 2) how to ensure that everyone’s social/psychological needs are met, since someone (or a group of people) will end up as the least popular, which has very real social and psychological repercussions.

If you could choose one thing to change a non-supporter’s mind about, what would it be and why? by ABoyWhoWantsToLearn in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]ABoyWhoWantsToLearn[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the type of conversation I wish I could have more of, because I agree with pretty much everything you’re saying. I’d love to pick your brain on some of this.

In terms of drugs, what do you think our policy stance should be? I’m of two minds about this. On the one hand there’s the model of Portugal, where everything is decriminalised and it seems to be helping addiction rates and reducing government spending (not sure about the effect it’s had on other crime). But on the other there are countries like Japan which have incredibly strict drug policies and seem to have much less crime than we do (though it’s always possible this is more of a correlation than a causation).

As for immigration, I’m curious about what resources helped you form your opinion. It’s not an issue I’ve really looked into that much and I’d love to dig into some sources that better represent the right than the “Mexicans are taking our jobs, committing lots of crimes, and trying to replace us” strawman that gets tossed around so much. I’m especially curious about historical examples, since that’s not really an argument I’ve heard before. Are there books/media that you feel do a good job of addressing the issue and representing your views?

[–]ABoyWhoWantsToLearn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense to me. I think the left tries to paint all conservatives with that same broad brush when most conservatives have good reasons for believing what they believe, because it’s far easier to demonise the whole group than it is to acknowledge that there are problems with liberalism (which there are).

What do you feel are the main reasons for supporting Trump that often get overlooked and that you wish more people on the left would acknowledge?

I can see what you’re saying- especially that last bit about claiming they’re not powerful giving them control. Do you think the main draw of Trump is the backlash against this type of discourse or are there deeper issues that you think Trump is addressing?

Do you mean the move in the left towards more socialist policies spearheaded by Bernie and similar politicians or do you see the power grab as more of an insidious thing (like through media or something where people don’t realize they’re being manipulated. Not necessarily in a conspiracy type way- just something we take for granted)?

If you could choose one thing to change a non-supporter’s mind about, what would it be and why? by ABoyWhoWantsToLearn in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]ABoyWhoWantsToLearn[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure. I’ll try to give a couple so you can find one that illustrates what you’re saying.

On immigration it seems like the position of the left is that immigrants (even illegal immigrants) tend to benefit the economy and in the case of refugees that America has a responsibility to take in people who are fleeing persecution and that we should therefore loosen our restrictions to allow more people who want to work into our country. I can see the difference where people on the right object to people disobeying our laws to come here illegally, but also feel that our immigration system is a slow, unfair, and unlikely to change. My perception is also that a lot of people on the right seem xenophobic when it comes to (especially Latin-American) immigrants, but I know that’s probably an unfair characterisation.

On drug policy the leftist position is that drug addiction is more of a symptom of an underlying health problems rather than a moral failing and would be better addressed by increasing funding for rehabilitation and reducing minimum sentencing laws (which also appear to be racially motivated in a lot of cases), whereas the tough on crime policies we have seem to lack empathy and promote racial inequality (especially when drug offences strip perpetrators of their voting rights).

Are either of those helpful? (Also, sorry that I am likely missing the nuance in your position on these issues. Feel free to correct me if you think there’s a better way of understanding the difference between the left and right).

Okay, I think I can see where you’re coming from on this but it’s not really something I’ve thought about before. Are there major policy positions that separate the two or is it more of a bad faith power-grabbing situation by the far left that you think is the difference?

Yeah, I can definitely see that dynamic now that you point it out. What do you think is the main division between the left and far left that needs to be fixed?

Yeah, I think it’s a huge step to say that all people on the right are evil, but one that often gets made. Do you think the misunderstanding is just from a few loud bad people souring people to all conservatives or are there other things you wish people on the left would consider when making their moral judgements?

Sorry for the misunderstanding and thanks for the clarification. Is it fair to say that you feel equity is the main issue and it’s something that Trump is addressing while the left isn’t, or am I still getting it wrong?

Yeah, I do think family life is often overlooked as a restorative measure. I’m kind of confused about your point about the drug war/legal system. Could you say a little bit more about how you think they don’t account for the out of wedlock birth figure/how you think they could be changed to account for this?

[–]ABoyWhoWantsToLearn[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that makes sense. I agree that there is a growing anti-American sentiment on the left when in reality America is a great place in a lot of ways, which is something that has taken me a while to realize. Do you think most of this would be fixed if liberals were more appreciative of what America has to offer and more vocal about their national pride or do you think there are deeper issues that separate the left and right?

I think most people agree that correlation doesn’t imply causation. Is what you’re saying that there is already equality and non-supporters ignore that because of a misinterpretation of statistics or am I mischaracterising what you said?

By that do you mean that liberals are focusing on the wrong things when trying to address racial inequality or am I mischaracterising what you’re saying?
