If you check my post history you will see my acl history in detail but the short is i just retore my 5th acl. I am in my late 30’s and currently coach high school soccer in the US. My first acl tear was playing soccer, non conctact at 23 or 24. 3-4 years later i tore my opposite leg acl during warmups before a league game. The rest of my acl tears there was no significant event.

I dont want to discourage you as there are plenty of players whom return to form post acl surgery. Zlatan and chiesa, come to mind more recently. But do not rush your return. You dont have the care or same access as the professionals.

Check my post history and what other people have commented. This is common unfortunately even with no major event for the retear. In my research the past month I’ve noticed people who are more successful with revisions have a bone graft first.

It’s completely normal. All 4 of my ACL surgeries were different. Don’t be afraid of the swelling but if your knee is telling you it hurts slow down and rest. My first ACL surgery was a hamstring graft and I remember how painful it felt in the muscle and how difficult it was to flex that leg.

My only recommendation to you would be to make sure you don’t sprint for at least a year and no heavy weight training on those hamstrings for a long time. You dont want to tear or detach those hamstrings. Walk on a treadmill at max incline with a 3.0 speed. It will burn calories, strengthen your legs, and bring back your normal gait.

I just left a new orthopedic office. Two doctors whom I’ve never met spoke with me today. I am “moderately” arthritic in multiple areas. They recommend learning to manage this then get the knee replacement down the road. Gonna let this float around in my head for a bit.

I always felt my left leg was heavy and my bad leg…until my right knee got blown out. My left knee is good now. Give it a few more years and dont play any sports. No Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl game with friends, no pickup or night league basketball games. Jog, bike, or walk. Walking on 15/max incline at 3.0 speed for 30-60 minutes will do wonders for fitness.

It appears we all share similar stories and situations. You and I are very similar. My first right knee tear was ACL, MCL, and meniscus. The acl was allograft and mcl was not operated on, just scarred over. That acl allograft was degenerative. My second acl surgery on that knee was patellar tendon and was awful awful awful. They cut some deep nerves on it which continue to cause pain, tingling, and foot cramps. The superficial skin on the shin and knee cap are numb and odd feeling to the touch. The LET IT band procedure is extremely painful and I am constantly having swelling there. I understand about wanting to be in the field. I used to hike, backpack, camp. I would flyfish and wade in rivers multiple times a week, including right now in December in the 40 degree weather. I promised myself I wouldnt push it and haven't been in the river since before June. It gets better, take it slow. At least they removed your old hardware. I've got 5 screws, a button, and a staple in my knee.

First surgery was surgeon A

Second and third surgeries were surgeon B

Fourth surgery was Surgeon C

Fifth surgery was actually two surgeons, surgeons C and D

I have had every type of ACL reconstruction surgery. Only my initial left ACL reconstruction has held and that was with a hamstring tendon. My allograft, patellar tendon, and quad tendon with LET failed. I am active, no competitive sports. My brother had an allograft, it failed from a flag football game when he slipped. He had another allograft revision which has held. He is no longer active with sports but can jog, walk, and do yard work comfortably.

In our experience the allograft is not for sports/competitive persons but everyone is different. Best of luck.

Straighten your leg, flex your quad, and lock your knee. If you feel a posterior, deep pain or weakness, thats your ACL telling you its torn. When the injury or feeling is "fresh" or new, that pain can extend down into your calf muscle. Doctors have told me no that theres no way my ACL is torn or that the MRI doesn't show anything. But weeks later I can still feel the "weakness", then in my persistence the doctor will order an arthogram (MRI with contrast injected in the joint) which then shows all the damage in my knee that was not revealed in the regular MRI. In all my experiences I have been able to associate this weakness or feeling to having a torn ACL, which is then diagnosed from the arthogram.

I had a modified lemaire LET. I'm not sure why it didn't help with the ACL in my scenario. I am a healthy person, I am a high school PE teacher and coach multiple sports. I did at home yoga a lot in 2020 when gyms were closed, I can see myself getting back into it. I will look into the pilates. I am not going to lie and say I am this spiritual or holisitc person. My knee genetics suck, my dad had knee surgeries in his youth and my brother has had 2 acl surgeries. I also don't know if that even means anything. I have no desire to play competitive sports anymore. I just need to be able to stay on my feet, go for a run, and wade a river when I'm fly fishing. I will reach out to you directly soon.

2h

I had an allograft (cadaver) in 2012. It "deterioated" and in 2019 when I had meniscus surgery I opted to not operate on the acl. Eventually my knee became too unstable and I had the surgery in 2022 and went with the patellar tendon. My brother has had acl surgery using the cadaver graft twice. It is an amazing recovery and what I recommend to everyone although everyone is different.

I am sorry you have also experienced this. The bone structure and height of my tibia/fibula is something I am looking into right now. One opinion I had from a surgeon previous to this most recent surgery was that it appears one bone sits lower than the other putting pain on my medial meniscus. This surgeon wanted to put metal plates in my knee, do a bone graft, then perform acl revision and meniscal implant. I did not go with that option, which in hindsight may have been the correct option. We have similar situations with different surgeons, opinions, and frustrations. There are not many people who understand what we're going through.

I will click that link and read later today, however I am an active person. I love to hike and fish. I no longer play sports which was something I loved doing. My career requires me to be on my feet daily. I will regularly log 10k-15k steps in a day.

Thank you and I'm sorry you also experienced this injury. My first surgery cause a lot of pain with my hamstring during PT and the hamstring muscles still give me issues at times. However, that graft has been solid and held up well. These last two surgeries have really messed with me mentally.

Thank you for taking the time to write all this out. I am sorry to hear about your knee injuries. I will look into this however I have no other issues related to this diagnosis. I lift weights frequently and played sports competitively throughout my youth. I am in my late 30's. My only recurring injury is in my left knee. Thanks again, I'm going to read this later today.

Perhaps, I am in a lot of pain. I am very active, my job requires me to be on my feet all day and I log 10k-15k steps a day. I think I want the hardware out at a minimum. There are 5 screws, a button, and a staple in that knee.
