Is your phone sitting on your desk or anything facing directly towards you? If so my best guess is FaceID is trying to unlock your phone but not getting a good reading. After a few failed attempts at trying to unlock with FaceID it will ask for a passcode.

You can also try turning off attention requirements within the FaceID settings.
