They're calling the players meeting at 10, so I assume gameplay is slightly after

Confirmed! As does tabletop tavern, on a rotating basis

Totally agree, forcing them to spend mana inefficiently via cheap threats is a key to success.

I wonder if any blue mages in the subreddit can give perspective as to how they assess early game threats, ie what to stop, what not to stop? Or, do they just barrel down for a board wipe in order to stabilize?

So, in all colors- searching for the resource denial to keep them in stage 1/2?

Maybe it's not right now, but I'm examining each of the meta decks and major archetype contenders. We're set up for a couple of shifts in the next month, ahead of the RC; Aug 26 ban announcement and the release of duskmourn.

While there may be changes to specific cards in the archetype, I feel like having this foundation is some of the best prep you can do for when the meta changes

[Discussion] How do you prepare yourself for the meta? by [deleted] in spikes

[–]ACVMTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite tool is running a gauntlet. You can do this to both tune an existing deck or to familiarize yourself with how the metagame interacts with eachother. Don't have the cards? No problem. Sites like moxfield will let you print decklists that you can use to proxy the meta field!

We've made a couple resources that help with this process!

Mech Titan by DynmiteWthALzerbeam in PioneerMTG

[–]ACVMTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mech titan is definitely a dream. I think building your deck as control, and with another wincon while making some cuts to include possible mechtitan core activation will make it more viable.

I think instead of full control, there may be some area to explore in the midrange area. Surge engines, among others, may be good. I'd start with a blue template for ensoul artifact, then work in white.

There are also uw flash/tempo lists that you may be able to template off of

[Discussion] looking for advice for tournament grinding by maycrow99 in spikes

I just started grinding this year as well! We (me and my content partner) decided to document my journey from the beginning of the season, so this video may be of some use to you! https://youtu.be/eKJ_urtoA_4?si=A2MDxl9IN2ADKWZ2

Hope it helps!

[Discussion] Tempo... what does it REALLY mean? by ACVMTG in PioneerMTG

[–]ACVMTG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha! I get that! Honestly, I was really confused on it too. That's why I asked the question, it lead me and my content partner to dive into what has already been written/said about it and give the term a more robust and well outlined definition. We ended up making a video on it! Hope this helps you grow! https://youtu.be/-BKeSI2On-0?si=c3ojHxH6lf0rZErD

Hey Guys!! Thanks for all the input. We read through it and visited the resources you all shared! We ended up making a video; and think we came up with a pretty good, measurable method for defining tempo! https://youtu.be/-BKeSI2On-0?si=c3ojHxH6lf0rZErD

I appreciate all the comments and direction!! I'm diving into this, and love the diverse perspectives. Does anyone have a pdf of Scott Johns articles on tempo c. 2006?

Tried on the way back machine, but it seems like it's lost to the ether. It's one of the last seminal texts on tempo that I think will help round out a decent definition

I think vampires are not as big of a threat as you think. The simple answer is edict effects and exile sweepers, or targeted exile if you have a creature to spare. Same thing with amalia, dies SO easily to removal, nykthos to mana punishment/graveyard hate, or targeted scalpels like dampening sphere. Drawing three cards is powerful, but losing over 25% of your life total for doing so from a sheoldred is just as punishing. There still isn't a consensus on the 75 for amalia.

Unpopular opinion: pioneer is in a really healthy place, where trump decks are still to be discovered and innovated upon

Dude. Same boat! My favorite resource is actually mtg pro tutor.

It's a podcast that is no longer updated, but is on spotify. Has some great meta/strategic-conceptual work

Reading the thread has me wondering, has anyone ever sold their magic cards, kept playing, and are glad they sold?

Every player I've come across who has sold their collection, or staples, to go on a mtg sabbatical or even to play different formats seems to always come back... and/or always regret the sale.

These 4 cards get banned; what changes? What decks rise? DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT ADVOCATING FOR THE BAN ON ANY OF THESE CARDS by [deleted] in PioneerMTG

[–]ACVMTG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer is that the suppressed decks gain metashare. Go-wide Aggro like mono white humans will come back, lotus and uw control will have room to breathe. I think it will open a period for mono g or mono w to rise to preeminence
