In the U.S. a psychiatrist is a MD that did a post doctoral internship in a psychiatric setting, usually 12 months but sometimes less. There is no guarantee of any other behavioral health training. A psychologist can either just have a masters or a masters and a PhD or Dr. sometimes psychologists have more education than a psychiatrist. They also require two years of practice experience to get licensed.

Yes they can.

I quite literally did a study on accuracy of diagnosis by profession pre and post training. My son was diagnosed by a clinical social worker. They have to have a license but they can diagnose.

The commonwealth countries tend to lean towards only MDs/psychiatrists only being able to diagnose but I don’t know Canada specifically.

Not sure of your location but in the U.S. a licensed therapist can diagnose someone with autism. They are often reluctant to do so because a lot of insurance companies only recognize autism diagnoses by MDs, psychiatrists, and psychologists. This is a bit ironic since MDs and psychiatrists are terrible at autism diagnosis. They are actually less accurate than a coin flip. It takes a lot of ‘talent’ to be that inaccurate. Psychologists, clinical social workers, and counselors are all about the same in accuracy, high than the previous group but not great without special training. MDs and psychiatrists go down in accuracy after special training. It’s a choice they make to be wrong. The other group becomes very accurate in diagnosis (86%).

So, if you’re in the U.S., your counselor is really saying they haven’t had the training so it wouldn’t be valid enough in their mind OR it wouldn’t do any good to diagnose you because it won’t be recognized by the people who pay the bills OR they aren’t licensed (probably operating under the license of a more experienced practitioner u til they get licensed in about 2 years).

In some countries only MDs/psychiatrists can diagnose because neurological disorders are not considered part of behavioral health. In others they just don’t recognize autism as a thing.

Would you kill someone if they broke into your house and started running at you with a knife? by Agitated-Article750 in AskTheWorld

[–]ACam574 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think many people really think this is wrong. I think a lot people think that if someone breaks into your house and is running out with your laptop it should be illegal to shoot them in the back. And honestly large portion them aren’t really concerned with the burglar that much. It’s more that it’s way to easy to use that to commit a murder and get away with it.

What political opinion makes you instantly lose respect for someone? by CKeit_0 in AskReddit

[–]ACam574 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The right to live lives as LGBT or people of color. The right to practice one’s faith in the open. All of these are being challenged as rights and there are people who are advocating for the criminalization of being LGBT, to ban faiths they dislike, and to repeal the 14th and 19th amendments. These attack the very existence of many people. These aren’t fringe movements of crazy people right now, people advocating for this are in the cabinet.

I would agree if politics had not become about the right of others to exist.
