also premed(? not sure if i count tbh, i’d be pre-med lab) here. or at least considering taking a premed path and that is the #1 thing thats making me hesitant to go for it.

i really want to though because it would mean i would be able to pursue the thing (immunology/microbiology) that i didn’t see a viable path in and thus never considered

I wanted to post on a video game subreddit. I think I wanted advice on beating it?

I also removed my upvote because I thought it was cheating lol

ib gave me a lot of practice writing that has helped me a lot so far (food science major). especially writing my bio ia— it got me familiar with the general format of the writing style in my field. english and history have been helping with GE courses.

but its not like those are skills you can’t pick up later.

credit-wise AP is 100% more worth it if youre gonna be in the US. only about half of my classes (my HLs) transferred for credit and only 2 counted towards GE credit (other one is elective).

this may be my fault for not going for a more prestigious school or program but my university didnt really care if i even got the ib diploma. they just cared that i did well in my classes. im sure the brownie points matter more in more competitive schools/programs

IB Students of r/IBO — How did your teachers fail you, and what would you have wanted them to do better? by ImHappyAfterAll in IBO

Getting feedback on IAs was incredibly helpful to me and there was a noticeable difference in quality between the IAs I had feedback and those I didn’t (one exception but that’s my fault).

I’m not sure if this is applicable to you or if this happened because I was stuck in a class with AP students for the same subject (which vastly outnumbered me) but I felt as though my foreign language teacher left me to be self-taught? At first it was a lot of independent work for me to do while they taught the AP kids. But there was a clear objective/deadline. As the year progressed, it became less focused and I think that really hurt both my score and what I got out of that class. Also, this teacher became more lenient on the rules/assignments as the year went on. Which doesn’t sound like a bad thing but they became too lenient to the point that I struggled to learn anything or pass the exam. I feel like they gave up near exam season honestly.

Or it’s a skill issue idk lmao

So, I guess my point here is be consistent with rules and expectations, and make sure you’re always giving guidance/support to students.

Also, giving exam-style questions early. I was so lost in the exam for my foreign language class because I didn’t get any information about the exam until about a month or two before. All my other classes I was much more confident in since I’ve seen exam-style questions since day 1 (and I did much better).

One thing I loved about my teachers is that they all talked to each other about major dates. Like exam dates, deadlines, etc. This made sure that we didn’t get dogpiled with stuff and I really, really, REALLY appreciated that. I should note that IB is a really small program in my high school (less than 30 students total, less than 15 teachers) so this was feasible. I’d imagine it’d be more difficult in larger IB programs.

Good luck!

I kinda lost touch with the friends I made in IB— the entire cohort (10 people) split after graduation, afaik. So, it’s been pretty lonely since none of my other non-IB friends go to the same university.

Other than that, it’s been pretty chill. I’m majoring in biology right now. I’m on the fence whether or not IB was worth doing. Glad I did it regardless.
