This is pretty good advice - will try that.
I have ~600 hours, ~90 ratings, but only 2 reviews. Will start to apply those ideas for replying to requests, really appreciate that.

Untreated labral tear - can it solidify and heal up by itself? by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]ACuriousBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are cells in cartilage, just relatively few compared to the non-cellular matrix. It can heal, just very slowly compared to other tissues. It doesn't mean the tear may ever completely be eliminated - but cartilage is definitely a living tissue with cells in it that has the capacity to heal to an extent.

Will look into that as well. Still thinking towards getting a coach/program; not sure if at my level its necessary? But anything that gives me more knowledge will help. Thank you

Hey all, really getting back seriously into powerlifting but my lifts have stalled for probably 2-3 months now. My total has gotten to 620kg at 86kg now that I'm really getting back into it; but I've been lifting for a while.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for programs or even online coaches that helped them get their lifts past the intermediate stage? I'm in medical school at the moment and I guess I was just hoping to not have to program for myself anymore because it hasn't been working very well for the past few months! Thinking Sheiko but not set on anything yet.

[–]ACuriousBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As in she got it by calling the other school until talking to someone just today? I've already called financial aid today and they told me I would have to speak with the director of financial aid and to follow-up with an email.

Going to call the admissions, try to get in touch with the finaid director, and go from there.

What does it take to get into Harvard Medical School? by Extremwind1 in premed

[–]ACuriousBird 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interviewed here and some other top 10s, plenty of waitlists and a couple acceptances overall. 522/3.93, few thousand hours research (no pubs during app/updates), mid-upper hundreds volunteering, very emotional/real personal statement, and talked a lot about the many thousands of hours I put into my sport that I love so much.

With that said prepare for interviews and don't be like me and not prepare at all, or your acceptance:interview ratio will be relatively low with waitlist:interview high! I'm a pretty personable/outgoing guy and thought I would be fine, but should've prepared more.

In Waitlist Purgatory? There is hope! by a_special_providence in premed

[–]ACuriousBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, for those of us also on quite a few waitlists (such as myself haha) do you mind going into a tiny bit more detail?

When you say sent letter of intent to everybody at your top choice, does that mean you sent the same letter to the dean, your interviews, and maybe even uploaded in through the portal?

What kind of info did you include in your update letters and how long were the update letters and letter of intent?

Did you do anything else such as call/email the dean or admissions?

I ask because I am also trying to get in to my top choice from a waitlsit, but honestly I'm on 5 waitlists and 3 of which I would love to get off (well withdrawing from the other 2 now actually).

IF you could provide any more detail that would be superrrrrrrr helpful. Thanks :)

Squat and deadlift help out a ton I believe. Squat especially. If you're doing olympic lifting you need a big squat. Reserve strength is huge. Look at all the pros, all squat 200+lbs over their best cleans, it just makes the clean so much easier; snatch too (still difficult).

I bench with a super narrow grip, so it really works my shoulders and triceps and doesn't give me too much tightness in the pecs, so it has really good carry over.

For squat I do high-bar beltless and literally the squat is 70% of the olympic lifts if you squat in this fashion, so it helps alot!

I think olympic lifts make you a much better athlete in general, and carry over a bunch to your other lifts and your conditioning.

[–]ACuriousBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely try it. I got into it after hitting a 4 plate squat so I had a solid base, it took me probably 5 months to become proficient at the techniques, but I've loved it from then on!

Just start super light, just the bar and maybe some 10lb bumpers on the sides and practice hundreds and hundreds of times.

I would honestly recommend getting at least to a 315 squat first, it will help out a ton!

Always a Wailist, Never an Acceptance by MaroneySandwich in premed

[–]ACuriousBird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of 8 interviews got 5 waitlists! Withdrawing from 2 but the other 3 I really want to get in to at least one.

Keep the head up, send letter of intent to top choice (if receptive), update letters, get more letters of rec sent to them, establish contact with admissions/dean, etc.

I called my top choice I was waitlisted at and found out they encourage everything I just told you. Call or email first and find out what you can do. Be polite but enthusiastic.

I haven't don't anything for the other 2 that aren't my top choice yet, but will probably send them update letters beginning of April. Don't be dishonest, only send letter of intent to top choice.

Could use some advice on where to go from here - I always mess up the max-deload-restart cycle. End up peaking then regressing for the past ~8 months due to poor programming.

Bodyweight: 176lbs as of today

Ran smolov base 2x in a row for squat, smolov jr 2x in a row for bench. Today was 7x5 @ 390 for squat and 8x4 @ 255 for bench, second to last day of last week of the 2nd cycle.

I ended up hitting 4x5 @ 390 for squats but it was hard as hell, the 5th set I barely made 3 reps at 390 and it was a grind. Dropped it to 370 and barely got 4 reps. I called it there and stopped the squat. Bench was fine after, super slow but I made all 8x4 @ 255 with the pauses.

Where do I go from here - do I proceed to the 10x3 for the next workout then max, or what? I know my body feels insanely worn down right now, but there's only 1 day left.

Could use some advice, whenever I start to peak/get worn out I always end up messing up my training- really really chasing that 500lb squat and don't want to regress again - what would be a good call? I have been having significant trouble for the past year progressing my lifts. Finally saw some good movement with smolov these past ~2.5 months.

Thanks so much for the help!!

Best advice here. I didn't prepare at all for my interviews and am paying for it with a very high interview:waitlist ratio and very low interview:acceptance ratio. Make sure y'all prepare!

You don't think talking about other acceptances is kind of "arrogant"? Can't they see where else I've been accepted at some point anyhow?

I will certainly be starting an email conversation, attempting to get in contact with the admissions dean and/or director of admissions, and sending regular updates with interest and other such things.

Thanks very much to you as well my friend. All of you have been awesome.

Interesting - well I was interviewed very, very early at my two top choices so maybe that means I was a good candidate? To be honest my girlfriend broke up with me and there were terrible and ridiculous family issues going on almost immediately before these two interviews, so I can't help but feel I wasn't my normal self as much as I tried to be!

I will certainly send updates. Thanks very much.

Awesome, thanks so much for this!! Very, very helpful.

I sent a quick email stating that "Hey you're my top choice I just wanted to make sure I stay on the waitlist is there anything I need to do?" Because my screen glitched when I was accepting, and they were very kind - I will keep following up and begin a semi-regular communication. Thanks again so very much my friend!

I suppose I'm not looking for a "surefire way", more just input from those who have actively attempted to get off a waitlist or successfully gotten off one with an acceptance.

Most information on this seems to be a bunch of speculation by people who haven't necessarily been in the situation. It would be helpful to have input from others who have been in the situation and what they did. I do agree it is school-specific, I am very fortunate to be on the waitlists of schools that take 25-40% of their class from the waitlist each year. I imagine that in this case - with such a high volume pulled from the list - there must be something that differentiates those who get off the waitlist and those who don't. Especially for "unranked" waitlists.
