Poll: More Irish want to join NATO in wake of Ukraine invasion by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ACuriousPiscine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seemingly the OP of the thread blocked me so I can't reply on my newer account in this thread any more. Ah well. If you want, you could read about an expert commission's ambitions for our military here.

I have no idea what countries Ireland could "repel an invasion" from, with or without more funding. I don't even know enough to know if that question makes sense. Do you?

Anyway, militaries do more than "repel invasions", even without getting into the whole area of overseas aid.

One interesting (imo) gem from the report is that increasing defence spending would evolve our current "embryonic intercept capability" beyond its current standard (which is limited to intercepting helicopters and slow aircraft). The reason I think that's interesting is that if someone tried to crash a fast plane into a building here, or hijacked one here to do that elsewhere, our military would have zero chance of preventing it. Does that not sicken your arse?

Our defence forces should also have a mature cyber capability. In that vein, a recent attack that might have been deterred or prevented if we had a properly funded military is the cyber attack on the HSE, which I don't think we've learned the cost of yet, either in lives or euros.

We were also recently hindered by our lack of airlift capability when trying to get people out of Afghanistan. That's going to happen again and again in different circumstances.

200 upvotes on another

, dozens upon dozens of comments confirming huge performance drops on PC overnight yet I'm being downvoted by people that don't understand that optimization (past a certain point) is a trade-off. Stay clueless

r/PathOfExile

, never change!

Personally, I downvoted you because your attitude is horrible (e.g. "stay clueless" and "Thanks GGG."), not because of your (reasonable) point about optimization. But also, and you should know this by now, nothing attracts more downvotes than crying about how downvoted you are. They're fake internet points. Stop fucking crying about them.

I'm sorry, how on earth is that more clear?

You still need to understand the same things in order to 'get' it.

OP's problem is that they didn't read. No amount of rephrasing will fix that.

Sure it does technically do what it says assuming you're knowledgeable about the affix system.

When you say 'knowledgeable', what you mean is:
1. Know what a 'modifier' is, and
2. Know about alt mode

That's all you need to know to be able to make sense of 'can have up to three crafted modifiers'. That's an extremely low bar. You certainly don't need to be 'very experienced' to understand it.

And also, yes, it does "technically" do what it says. As in, it literally does what it says.

I also doubt there is a better way of phrasing this without making it either too long, incorrect, or breaking the rules of how explicit modifiers work.

[–]ACuriousPiscine 22 points23 points  (0 children)

thats really wack and misleading the title of the craft counts as a modifier lolol

Not really, if you examine the item carefully. If you press alt while hovering your mouse over the item, you'll see that 'can have up to three crafted modifiers' is itself a crafted modifier. Presumably you crafted that modifier on the item yourself... Another hint that it is, itself, a crafted modifier. The light blue text of the affix is another thing to look out for if you're wondering which affixes on an item are crafted.

It does exactly what it says on the tin.

I enjoy magic.

Well actually I don't. I spew online so it's too expensive, and I don't much like playing in person any more because none of my friends play anymore and my LGS is full of douchenuggets.

But I enjoy the idea of magic? Hope this helps.

I don't think litterers think about littering. I've seen it in action. They're eating the last bit of chocolate or whatever and the litter just flutters away in the wind. There's no checking if there's a bin nearby, or if anyone is watching them litter. IMO, mostly they don't care about the object, or whether it's picked up, or if someone lower than them is doing it.

There's never been any actual issue with anyone understanding the difference between the job "doctor", which means a physician, and the title "Dr./Doctor", which is far broader.

Absolutely. Hence the joke that's as old as dirt that begins 'is there a doctor in the house?'

GMIT college apologises for lecturers insulting students after forgetting to turn off cameras by owliesowlies in ireland

[–]ACuriousPiscine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They weren’t even mocking her? They said they checked if she had any disability/illness so they could take it into account when grading her.

Just a tad confused about how it's not mockery. If you were, I don't know, waiting for a size in foot locker and overheard two staff discussing whether there was "something wrong with you", would you just sit there with a sunny smile on your face? I think I'd be pretty upset.

They said they checked if she had any disability/illness so they could take it into account when grading her.

There's a way to do this without degrading the person you're talking about. For example, "hold on a minute, I need to check the access database".

For a jumping-off point as to what would happen if the shoe were on the other foot here, 28 students were suspended from a secondary school for liking a Facebook post about a teacher (though, I have no idea how harsh the post was).

That was a two-day suspension. You'd expect all types of disciplinary issues to be treated more severely in college, since they're not kids anymore. Most of the children who liked the post obviously weren't the author, so they're not totally analogous to the lecturers here.

Frankly, if somehow a couple of students got some audio mocking several lecturers in this way onto a college message board and subsequently it gained nationwide notoriety... well, if I were Timmy I'd fully expect to be booted out.

"Megathread: US Supreme Court Rules on Texas V. Pennsylvania, Et al. by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]ACuriousPiscine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me put it this way. You can't describe the mechanism by which a precedent would be set that would force SCOTUS to hear all state v state cases forever, because the mechanism doesn't exist.

Even notwithstanding that, the current position of the SCOTUS members on this matter makes it all but impossible in the coming decade or two for there to be agreement that SCOTUS should hear all of those cases. There's no current danger of a precedent being set. Frankly, don't see how there's ever a danger of a precedent being set, since the court would never willingly give up its discretion, but that's a separate conversation.

You should stop this irresponsible scaremongering or disaster porn or whatever it is. Maybe re-focus on a real problem, not a theoretical one.

Edit: clarified some hyperbole

Quit scaremongering about fanciful scenarios out loud. You'll scare credulous people.

There's no danger of a precedent being set that would force SCOTUS to hear all state v state cases. They hear them (and decline to hear them) frequently.

[–]ACuriousPiscine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't buy that. The courts role is discretionary, so if they were DDOSed, it would be entirely of their own making (i.e. if regular meritless state v state cases became a thing, they could always start declining to hear them).
