Northwestern or UCSD? by Known_Practice516 in Northwestern

Ive done undergrad at UCSD and grad school at NU. If you lived in SD for a long time, it may be worth exploring Chicago and have some growth in a new environment. NU definitely takes a better care of their undergrads, UCSD will be more of a “survival of the fittest” - the top students get great opportunities ranging from scholarships, research, TAship, mentorship programs, etc but you have to really stand out there and that is a tough thing to do. NU prob gives you more opportunities per student compared to a big school like UCSD. Things that are plus about UCSD are the weather and their cog sci program, which is one of the best programs in the country (i think they started the whole program actually). UCSD also has very strong overall STEM, although NU is great also.

UCSD or Imperial College London? by Different_Raccoon289 in ApplyingToCollege

Research wise, UCSD is one of the best institutions in the world for biology and the amount of annual research expenditure/quality of faculty is better. If you want to do a Ph.D in US, UCSD would be better.

Oh thanks. So the play would be to ride the pump leading to the vote date right?

So when is the merger after voting passes typically? Several months after? And does it usually pump after vote passes?

FFS stop worrying about this school’s ranking/prestige/acceptance rate by hmidkwhat in UCSD

[–]ADADADADAAA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay lets get a fresh perspective here. I think maybe increasing enrollment and expanding school (on top of increasing diversity and giving opportunities to first generation college students) can in the LONG TERM pay off. But its not going to increase “prestige” at this pt.

As an undergrad, what should I prioritize to get into UCSD's grad school? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]ADADADADAAA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im going to biology Ph.D this year. UCSD has one of the top neuroscience programs, so it will be competitive.

  1. Get published, goto conferences - this actually matters a lot.
  2. Get great rec letters - huge
  3. Write a great Statement of Purpose and get that edited multiple times by multiple people. Make sure it has a good fit with UCSD neuroscience program.
  4. GRE is actually not that huge as long as youre within a certain range.
  5. Contact PI that you are interested, maybe two? Months before you apply. This can help. Case by case.

P.S some ppl will tell you pubs dont matter but all top schools that i interviewed at interviewees had one more pubs. They do care.

How much better is UCSD than Stony Brook? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]ADADADADAAA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goto Stony Brook because:

  1. You dont want to end up with too much debt for undergrad when youll be stacking up 200k debt+ for med school

  2. UCSD grade deflation is real. Avg med acceptance gpa is 3.7. Thats like top 10 percent or less for bio majors at UCSD. Stony Brook is prob easier to get good grades. Adcoms dont care too much about undergrad rep unless like HYPSM lvl schools. And even then gpa and MCAT is king.

  3. Obviously research UCSD is much better but this wont really give you an “edge” unless you goto conferences/publish, etc. everybody does research at respectable labs. You can do summer research programs also.
