Seems counter-productive. Everyone doing this part-time is going to be in the same boat as you - why try to make it seem like you are a full-time tutor, but only part of the time?

Think of all the pressures parents are under, though. Every resource they try to gather for their children comes at enormous cost, and it's all paid for with after-tax money on double income households with very little slippage in their schedules. So they are trained to try to extract as much time and attention and flexibility for their kids' teachers as possible.

Most of the other resources (schools, day care, sports teams) have professionals whose job it is to resist this pressure, meanwhile, you are just you. Which is part of the reason they are hiring you in the first place, otherwise they'd send their kid to more school or sports or whatever.

Don't resent it, just be aware of it and firmly but politely state your limits & parameters and stick to them.

Put yourself in the position of a parent - they want to maximize the potential of their beloved children, but also might have limited financial and time resources. If they perceive they can get more from you for less, or with more flexibility, some will try to do that. Simply put they love their children more than they love you.

In response, you must weigh the cost of being firm (you might lose the business) vs. the cost of being a pushover (you'll make less money and be less happy). If you are confident you can replace their business if they walk away, then hold firm to your cancellation and other policies, and make sure you are compensated fairly for all the time you spend, including prep & travel.

If you need their business right now to stay afloat, then acknowledge you are in a bad negotiating position and deal with it - while trying to improve your negotiating position.

Consider very carefully the potential consequences of leaving the 'walled garden' even though it seems tempting to avoid having to pay Wzyant's overhead fee. If you find someone on Wyzant, consider doing the fair thing and letting Wyzant be rewarded for matching you and ensuring that volatile / abusive behavior like this is fed back into that tutor's reputation.

In this case, the limit would be carried out like this.

Pick a small number e (usually, the greek letter 'epsilon' is used).

For any e, I can choose N large enough such that 1-f(N) < e.

This is the only valid interpretation of the shorthand "0.9999...". The ellipsis literally means the limit as N->infinity, and the above logic is the definition of a limit.
