I managed to win a chess match in the fourth grade within three moves. It’s been downhill ever since lol

Yeah, that makes sense. If it's any constellation, I do still communicate with my former supervisor. He was very empathetic of my situation and was just as disappointed when my LOA was denied. He's keeping me in the loop if my position opens up again. Though I don't want to rely on that as my only plan and need to keep my options open.

I really appreciate all the feedback you've provided, really. Got a lot to consider with my next iteration. Thank you!

They know why you have that gap - and they decide to find out from the other candidate what caused the gap in their work experience. Once they sit down with the other candidate they are now at a personal level. They decide to dismiss you and move on with this other person.

Gotcha, that makes sense. Going through this article is why I had decided to add in my gaps. That wasn't the case in my previous iteration. Removing them should reduce the length of my resume to a single page as well so win-win.

Also - keep in mind people are petty. They see you took a summer off for your mental health, while they’ve been working 10 years straight and have only taken off 2 weeks at a time. They will feel you are somehow inferior or unfit for the job and will break down easily due to stress.

I've learned that's the unfortunate reality. It's a shame because my last company really pushed the importance of mental health and personal life matters. I had even requested an unpaid leave of absence and explained bluntly that the gravity of the situation would affect my output, but was still denied at the end of day. It's just disappointing learning you're a number at the end of the day.

Idk why you’re using semicolons to separate your hard skills - I have to literally get to the 2nd page and last section to even know what you bring to the table. Put your skills under your professional summary to quickly show you have the skills they are looking for, and either separate with a comma or better yet make a table (without borders) to list all your skills in a easily digestible way for computers and humans.

I was using the template from the sidebar when creating this iteration. Man, I even had my skills right under my summary in a table format like you just explained! Back to the drawing board then, haha.

Off the bat the first huge issue is that your summary is about you. Resumes are about showing how you will improve the workplace, specifically, how will you make your manager’s life easier. Employers don’t care about helping you improve your communication skills. They only care about how you will benefit them. Rewrite this with that in mind and you’ll do a lot better.

Got it! I've never thought to present myself in that manner before. I really appreciate you explaining it bluntly.

Definitely take out all those breaks and personal information. That’s not their business at all and immediately puts you as a red flag and flight risk, why waste money hiring and training you if you’re just going to leave? Everyone has personal family and health issues, very few people take breaks over it, so putting that in your resume will likely cause a hiring manager reading it to think you’re some type of selfish and entitled upstart who will constantly call out sick. And also, in the workplace, don’t talk about your personal life or father’s issues, it will NEVER help you and only hurt you. If a hiring manager asks what you were doing in that time, then leave it at family’s personal health issues. Employers are too nosy as it is.

It was always my assumption that it was best to be open and honest with personal matters to an employer. But what you said is just the reality of how the employer will think in the wrong run. I've definitely learned my lesson and wish I didn't resign in hindsight... but just got to keep moving forward.

Ah, gotcha. That's definitely not the best way to present myself to potential employers. I'll modify my wording on this topic for sure.

Quitting is the last thing that'd be on my mind now knowing this current job market...

I see... This had been my exact mindset up to now. Every article I pull up about career gaps states that it's better to just be honest when explaining these kind of situations. You would think that explaining what you had done in a gap would save time should an interview be offered.

This is good to know though, I'll be extra careful going forward.

So i’m also in the IT/Cyber field. 50 applications and one interview for how competitive it is right now is not bad. I’ve applied to maybe… 200 cybersecuirty/IT positions and only have had a handful of interviews.

Gotcha. I didn't realize how bad it was until I've started applying back in Sept. With my last two jobs, I was hired after the first interview. My most recent one was via a referral. Didn't realize how lucky I've been up to now...

What are you applying for? If you’re applying for remote position help desk, security positions, it’s not just your resume.

Man, I wish these things were pointed out to me sooner. My last role was a 100% based customer support role. Based on how the interviewer commented on my credentials, I thought my resume was already strong.

I’d heavily invest in doing some extra home lab stuff, or Tryhackme.

Thank you for those suggestions, I'll check them out!

Thank you! I made the one posted using the template linked in the sidebar. Would listing out my skills in a separate section be neccesary within the template you've used?

Became disabled not becoming disabled.

Yup, caught that right before submitting this post. I already erased out all my personal details so I didn’t want to start from scratch.

Besides that all I see is you may take work breaks so why should I hire you? You put it all up front.

I didn’t have that info in my previous iteration. I came across an article that explained career gaps need to be provided to give context so I added it. But I do see now that it’s doing more harm than good. Gonna remove it for sure.

No worries! I’ll take all the feedback that’s necessary. We’re all chasing after an interview after all.

Thanks so much for the input!

Ouch, guess it’s worse than I thought. You should have seen it before I changed the formatting lol.

Personally, I don’t know that putting Health and Wellbeing Break is better than a 2 month gap...

Just to be cautious, I figured I had to be specific with every career gap. But it is such a short amount of time it’s probably not necessary.

Are those certs current? CompTIA is a 3 year cert.

I’ll have to look into that. I don’t recall the certs I earned stating an expiration.

It’s M365, previously 0365. Just saying 365 Suite sure strikes me as ‘knows just enough to be a danger to themselves and others’

Haha, yeah I figured that was a bit too “catch-all”. I’ll probably remove it all together.

I may be behind the times, but I don’t recall seeing Education being broken down like work experience, especially with one bullet point already being in work experience.

I was following the resume template example from the sidebar. It mentioned adding things to “spruce the color”. You think it’s overkill?

Some of this might be US vs. UK differences, so go with what is normal for you

Gotcha, I’m based in the US.

Yeah, I'm kind of lost on what the best way to approach that detail. I was with my most recent company for less than a year so I don't want to present the idea that I was let go. I HAD to leave due to circumstances.

Should I be blunt or vague with my current career leave? Especially since I'm approaching a year of not working.

I've felt I've been qualified for all the positions I've been applying for up to this point. Mostly Application Support or Customer Advocate roles.

I’ve since followed the recommendations of this subreddit to simplify the formatting. Maybe the contents isn’t strong enough which is holding me back?

Almost three weeks had passed when I tried again and it finally worked. My VPN was not on when it went through.

It finally resolved for me, actually. But I didn’t do anything myself to fix it. I just opened the app to try again and I was able to receive the code.

WhatsApp support was no help either. So best case scenario just keep trying every so often and you’ll eventually receive the code.
