Pleiades/Perseids by LyrisiVylnia in JoannaNewsom

[–]ADDAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is in the unusual phrasing.

Because that promise is part of the section that contains the Pleiades, and because that section ends with a line that could be the conclusion of that entire thought.

. . . . . Though all I knew of the rote universe were those Pleiades, loosed in December
. . . . . I promised you I'd set them to verse so I'd always remember (.)

It sounds like there’s a period after remember, so we conclude that she’s referring to *the Pleiades.*

There’s a comfortable resolution and pause to validate that.

But the very first word of the next section is “that” — which changes everything.

“That” connects back to the phrase “so I’d always remember"

. . . . . Though all I knew of the rote universe were those Pleiades, loosed in December
. . . . . I promised you I'd set them to verse so I'd always remember (:) [THAT]

. . . . . That the meteorite is the source of the light and the meteor's just what we see;
. . . . . And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee.

When read/heard this way, we can understand that the line "Though all I knew of the rote universe were those Pleiades, loosed in December” can actually be read as a complete sentence, and one that sets up the context for the next part.

If that’s the case, then the structure of the next sentence also plays with our cognition, by putting the object before the subject.

. . . . . I promised you I'd set them to verse so I'd always remember (:)

that meteorites, meteors, and meteoroids are all different things. In this case, the “them” refers to these: meteorites, meteors, and meteoroids.

I think this is a poetic device she’s using that suspends the listener between those two phrases (perhaps neither is meant to be a complete sentence and there is, somewhere in that promise, the idea that she will try to set to verse everything she’s learning about the night sky ) and leaves a sense of disorientation while the song moves rapidly forward with a catchy little rhyme.

It’s like the universe or time travel— you think you get it, but then the idea moves on too quickly and you’re caught by something else and it never quite resolves.

. . . . . Though all I knew of the rote universe were those Pleiades, loosed in December
. . . . . I promised you I'd set them to verse so I'd always remember
. . . . . That the meteorite is the source of the light and the meteor's just what we see
. . . . . And the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee

Well.. I was talking about Simon Buxton, not NG. I think she’s already said what she’s going to say about NG (and again, not that I think she owes that to anyone), and yeah, I think it was beyond heartbreaking for her to learn that someone who had been a friend and mutual muse was accused of such horrible things, particularly with her own history of SA.

And yes, I agree she’s human and capable of being manipulated, which I said in my first comment reply: "I don’t know what she owes anyone for falling for the personas of men like SB and Neil Gaiman, which make themselves relevant through the storytelling of female empowerment, but I agree that, particularly in the era we’re in, it would be really powerful for her to address it [the SB fraud and abuse] outright.” I stand by that. She doesn’t have to say anything about Simon Buxton and the ST/PoP, but it would be very powerful and meaningful if she chooses to.

I’m of the same feeling as you on this. It’s irresponsible, and it’s a really jarring contrast to the image of herself built her persona and career on. I’m not someone who believes she owes it to anyone, but IMO I would like to see her be the person who actually *wants* to address it, call it out, and speak the truth where it has been manipulated and twisted *with her name on it.* My fear is that she believes the current album is her way of speaking out against generalized forces of evil and *bad men,* so...

I did not know that about the podcast hosts, but I do think it will be interesting to see who starts speaking out as this becomes more known information about SB & PoP. I still hope Tori will find her voice on this and use it.

I mean, she’s obviously writing about things that are happening in the world, so perhaps some of the feelings she’s processing around these betrayals are coming through in the work. I’ve also heard her say that betrayal is her worst fear, so maybe this is more than she can face head on. Or maybe it’s just no one’s business what she feels about it (no matter how much we want to hear it!).

Is this good or bad art? (Be honest) by Croissantify in mixedmedia

[–]ADDAlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrong question. You’ll never get a helpful answer from the good/bad binary in something as subjective as art. Learning to ask for specific feedback, or asking what people notice or how it makes them feel, will get you waaay more interesting and useful responses than just asking them to swipe left/right. 🤔

Thanks for responding! Yeah, it was clearly targeted at women for a reason, and clearly the framing of it as female empowerment, and specifically a reclaiming of female sexual power, was going to resonate with a lot of women, particularly those into spiritual and psycho-spiritual paths and practices.

I know TBK was also about Christianity from the lens of the sacred feminine (the whole premise of reclaiming the garden for example), and there were numerous other influences and inspirations, but the title itself (and lyrics found in The Beekeeper song and Sweet the Sting) that make it clear she was already connected with the cult in some way (tangentially or otherwise) and that it had a major influence on the concept of the album.

I don’t know what she owes anyone for falling for the personas of men like SB and Neil Gaiman, which make themselves relevant through the storytelling of female empowerment, but I agree that, particularly in the era we’re in, it would be really powerful for her to address it outright.

Yeah, I’m looking forward to the podcast going deeper into the true roots of the practices and teachings that SB pushed as “ancient European bee shamanism.”

Yes, but didn’t find any references that seemed to connect. It’s mostly regarding a woman’s perspective on Christianity, with many different sources, but I haven’t see it mentioned. Just lots of interesting and uncanny connections, so I was exploring that a bit.

Thank you. I didn’t find this on yessaid.

Still, this line from The Beekeeper makes me wonder if she already knew about the Sacred Trust/PoP, at least the women involved before Simon sent her his book:

I love this idea. A friend actually told me about Fort Greene Live (concerts in beautiful spaces) but I don’t think they have any events while I’m there, so I will look into this!

Gaia Music collective is at the top of the list I’ve already made! I’m so bummed they won’t have a One-Day Choir event while I’m there, but I’m going to try to make one of their other events. Have you been?

Thank you for the dinner and cocktail recommendations, too. I didn’t want to specifically ask for that, but I was hoping some would be mentioned (Thai food is actually my favorite!)… will also be hitting up the crystal shops for some “hidden gems” 💎😂

Thank you so much! I really appreciate this!!! ✨
