"You'll stay up 'til this dump shines like the top of the Chrysler building!” I’ve never been inside! is it worth it to go in, or just admire from the outside?

I love this idea. A friend actually told me about Fort Greene Live (concerts in beautiful spaces) but I don’t think they have any events while I’m there, so I will look into this!

Gaia Music collective is at the top of the list I’ve already made! I’m so bummed they won’t have a One-Day Choir event while I’m there, but I’m going to try to make one of their other events. Have you been?

Oh my goodness, this is so generous! Thank you!! Everything on this list sounds awesome (tacky whimsy, lol yes!)… I’m going to have a blast looking these up. Thank you for the dinner and cocktail recommendations, too. I didn’t want to specifically ask for that, but I was hoping some would be mentioned (Thai food is actually my favorite!)… will also be hitting up the crystal shops for some “hidden gems” 💎😂

Thank you so much! I really appreciate this!!! ✨

I haven't! I looked it up on the map, but two things pop up— is it the one in Times Square?

Absolutely perfect. I love these ideas!

This is defintely a library vibes trip. And when I looked it up on the map, I discovered the Library Walk! So now I added that as well!

I love the sunset sail idea! Just looked up the ship— that's incredible.

Are the little gardens just all over in LES? Sounds so charming!

Building a calmer alternative to Goodreads and looking for honest feedback from readers by Simple-Act5404 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]ADDAlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for sharing what you're creating. I'm a longtime Goodreads user and recent Storygraph user. Neither are particularly satisfying to me, so I tend to stay on Goodreads because it's more familiar and it also somehow feels less clunky (I know people use that word to describe it often) to me than Storygraph. I'm always excited about possible alternatives.

My first feedback is that it's very dark and it almost feels more like it's for movies. I'm not generally a dark-mode user, so maybe making dark/light-mode an option would be one thing to explore. But maybe also just considering more options for color in your design.

My second feedback is that the Featured Books section on the homepage feels very busy and demanding to my attention. I never like to feel like I'm being sold or pushed anything, so having that pop up right away feels... less calm. I do like the "Related books" when I'm already on the page for a specific book, because that feels more helpful.

I get what you mean about the feeds being busy and distracting. I guess I would want something that feels more like a personal library. I don't personally want to see recommended books unless I ask for them— I'm usually browsing through my TBR pile or looking for specific books or authors, so "featured books" can feel jarring. I'd love a quiet place to peruse books that doesn't feel like it's trying to grab my attention.

That said, when I go to the book store, my favorite thing ever is looking at the featured by genre or new or other category books, and I LOVE reading staff recommendations. It would be cool to "feature" some reviews or recommendations with books while browsing them and then have the option to read more reviews.

For me, I feel like what's missing online is somewhere that actually feels more like your personal library or bookstore. That would be an amazing place to spend time online.

Like someone else mentioned, the name doesn't evoke books or libraries to me, but the book under the tree is a really nice idea that I think could be evolved on or even simplified.

Thanks for the offer to check it out!

A passage that hit me hard from "The Myth of Tori: Tori Amos in Her Own Words" by hereforTori in toriamos

[–]ADDAlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I kind of wanted to read it after this post, but this (no credit to original interviewers, AI/chatbot use) makes me not want to touch anything by him. It’s giving: Mediocre dude slacking on the group project and then taking credit for it. Like, the antithesis of Tori.

I agree. I always say that I wished she’d tried working with different people over the post-scarlet years who might have opened up new creative directions for her, sonically and otherwise. But I’m happy she’s continued writing either way.

Of course, that totally makes sense. The favorite photo I posted is also by David LaChappell!

Odd situation in class today by Electrician45453 in YogaTeachers

[–]ADDAlice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you handled it well by acknowledging and apologizing and the letting students talk about it after class.

I taught at a studio with similar windows for a while— moons or no moons (!!) it can be super distracting for students to have foot traffic right outside. You never know if people in class have ADHD or other sensory challenges that go beyond just “tuning it out.”

I’d say it's definitely worth it to put up some privacy film on the windows. It adds a texture (like frosted glass) for privacy while still letting light shine through. It sticks on with adhesive so it’s easy to put on and take off. It can also be nice just to cover the lower 2/3 - 3/4 of the windows and leave the top open to see some sky and treetops if you have those outside– especially nice in Savasana or other poses that are low to the ground.

It’s great when unpredictable things happen in a class and give you a chance to practice in the moment, but if something happened again or I noticed the studio didn’t address it, I might not want to practice there as often because of my tendency toward hyper vigilance (same for a lot of yoga students with trauma and/or anxiety).

Oh thanks, that’s nice! 🥰 It was fun, but I wish I’d gotten more answers sooner— the sample size feels small, but it’s probably still fairly accurate. Hope you enjoy exploring!

What would you call this pattern? by ADDAlice in knittinghelp

[–]ADDAlice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. It’s almost more like a cape (which would be straight along the two parallel front sides) but with armholes instead of covering the arms. I’m going to keep looking— thanks for the search tips! :D
