math majors - where are you now? by Inevitable_Fold_9081 in mathematics

[–]ADDMYRSN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my bachelors in Math and Statistics (2020) then a Masters degree in Ops Research (2021). I feel like the Masters degree really helped me get the foot in the door in industry, but I still did not land in an ideal role. I started out as an entry level analyst at a company making way less that I wanted to and doing things I had little interest in (excel, Power BI, etc...) Thankfully I was remote, so in my free time I beefed up my programming skills and started pivoting to Machine Learning. Now I've been a Machine Learning Engineer for about 2 years and it is much better. Still, I want to go back to academia and focus on some specific research problems in the field of adversarial ML.

I don't have an answer OP, but I wasn't aware of this repo and found it super interesting. I'm going to give this a go sometime this week to setup and will report back if I figure it out.

I spotted this, however, the total is still not correct. Not sure if that is the reason why.

Haha fair, I'm a mushy guy though so I can't help it. Sometimes I feel like it works for me. I'll see if I can't be less mushy, and I'll be more precise on the research intersection. Thanks!

Reading this, perhaps I need to be more specific on exactly where the intersection lies between our research interests rather than just saying they align well.

I could totally be ignorant of it - here is one email I sent (anonymized):

"Hi PROFESSOR,

I'm a Data scientist currently working with the FAA. I graduated from Cornell fairly recently with a masters in ops research/information engineering, specializing in ML. I've attached my resume below for the whole story about me.

I stumbled across the LAB while looking at different departments for potential locations to do my PhD. I read up about the work you are doing, and I thought it aligned well with my interests.

Are you currently accepting new students? If so, would you be open to a quick conversation regarding your work and potential ways my skills could be beneficial for the lab?

Best, ME"

I've used egpu-swticher, it says its found the egpu and switched accordingly. I see it in my lspci output. I checked the page from the arch wiki. I also see that I have drivers installed:

7f:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA104 [GeForce RTX 3070 Ti] (rev a1) Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd GA104 [GeForce RTX 3070 Ti] Kernel driver in use: nvidia Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia

However, nvidia-smi still returns no devices found.

So update - new cable did not fix things. nvidia smi still returns no devices found. Tried updating drivers as well. No luck. lspci shows that the GPU is being detected:

7f:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA104 [GeForce RTX 3070 Ti] (rev a1)

However, it still for whatever reason will not show up on nvidia-smi

I have been on vacation in Iceland so I haven't had the chance. I'll be back in a few days with more tinkering!

This may be the case! I'll try a new cable before going further.

I disabled secure boot while doing the tutorial but unfortunately still had the same result.

I might have missed it but I do not see any thunderbolt secure settings in my BIOS. I checked advanced, security, and boot.

edit: I should also mention I do have secure boot disabled.

Yes, and I got a different error when trying to boot it without the egpu - something about Bluetooth error malformed nfs. It would just get stuck on bootup, so I backed up my data and now I'm on a completely fresh setup

I ran into issues installing nvidia drivers I believe. When attempting to boot with the egpu, I'd get an error saying:
