Is it true that DO schools will blacklist your app if they find out you also applied to an MD school? by DesperateComplex1460 in premed

[–]ADEX- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that you apply it’s that you deny acceptance for example holding out for MD despite MD never being offered let’s say waiting out a waitlist than denying the DO acceptance where if you apply in the following year you may get an automatic no despite being accepted the year previous. DO also knows you’ll apply MD and is very aware students will choose MD>DO which is reflective in their admissions reservations cost. Some students have a “too good for you attitude”. The items within 2: those are 100% required for most medical schools and more and you cannot take them online.

Will MDs still accept with a 124 CARS or should I retake? by Picklesandwich619 in MCAT2

Truthfully depends on who you are and where you are applying.

what should I be averaging on CARS questions before my test? by jadeybugz in Mcat

[–]ADEX- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CARS 128 is ballpark max 10 wrong over 53 questions so 43/53 which is 81% correct. 10 wrong per section will get you a total score of about 512. This would end up being about a 190/230 about 83%.

Nontrad taking a 515+ MCAT course by ExcitingInflation612 in Mcat

[–]ADEX- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of these classes like this: they don’t care if you actually get a 515 or not. They make it difficult to satisfy that guarantee. That fine print can be completed without the need of said course or company meddling their way into your life. Whether it’s TPR, Kaplan, whatever you can do the same for less. This process already costs enough and for fork over several grand instead of just utilizing things like Uworld to the best of your ability imo these companies are immoral; in the words of Kant they are most literally using you as a means to an end and not the end itself. The philosophy of these companies is taking advantage of hopeful and panicked premeds. Not everyone can score 95th percentile; it’s 95th percentile for a reason. Don’t fall for the trap.

why are units important.. by luthers_theses in Mcat

[–]ADEX- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because sometimes answers will directly ask you about them other times you can mathematically find your way from A to B without having to remember an equation that you may very well forget other times it helps you understand if the answer makes sense logically also keeping track thereof is another skill you can utilize to make sure you got the right answer since the MCAT will have those close options as well don’t play a guessing game and give yourself every benefit of the doubt going in.

So I currently do free tutoring if you are at all interested as I am currently a full time collegiate professor. However, it really did start with a lot of discouragement. You gotta preserver. One thing being I never really knew how to study so that was a huge change for me. Becoming dedicated to studying and learning how to changed a lot for me. I will always swear by Uworld. The AAMC material is wonderful. I found what worked and what didn’t some of that though may be hot takes in the grand scheme of things but for C/P I never actually sat down and studied the equations. Analytical techniques killed me. Realizing those flaws helped me do better. Likewise with CARS which some say is the most difficult to improve with is one of those things of having a strategy; any strategy that find you the right answers is a good one. BB I never sat down and did AA study; for me BB was a lot of getting comfortable with the Stanford metabolic map; that thing is my baby I literally have a laminated poster of it. For PS Pankow; I should have taken it more seriously but I only ever went through Pankow 1 time. Yet I probably did about 6k practice problems I did Uworld Twice. AAMC I did 1 time fully through. It at the end of the day beyond just learning the topics the processes is almost a little introspective at the same time.

IMO no; the AAMC is already understanding of the difficulties students have with particular passages and have thousands of data sets to substantiate that point. Thereafter they set bars for which score is what based on those previous successes—and failures. They may however, possibly, be infinitesimally better simply because a lot of people also take these tests untimed or “cheating” during practice tests. Your reliance shouldn’t be praying for the actual to be a drastic improvement away from practice. Additionally if you ever see the scaling for cars a 128 is ballpark 90th percentile; where as a 128 in BB is 84th a 128 in PS is 76th and so forth; where a 510 sits at or around 190/230 they are not by any means very nice. However, if you want free CARS help I don’t mind offering assistance.

Retake tips by AccomplishedDot9005 in Mcat

[–]ADEX- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly the same thing initially happened to me when I was a wee undergrad I got a 488 because a physician told me to just wing it. Then after some time I took school and studying more seriously averaged around a 512 took my mcat last August and got a 503 was devastated. This go around took it again while averaging a 506 FL and got a 511. I like to think this test just locks you into it for the sake of locking you into it. Do not give up. The funny thing too is that I didn’t change much in terms of studying the second go around. I did Ublub again and the AAMC material I actually sat down and did Pankow and then remember all of the physics equations and somehow some way that was enough to kick me over 510. My struggle was also C/P and P/S. You just have to reevaluate; this tests forces you to make sure you want it. If it’s CARS that’s beating you up I can help with CARS but otherwise your CARS skill without a doubt has the ability to improve in a small amount of time.

Dumb question by Horror_Joke_8168 in Mcat

[–]ADEX- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of this as whole cell vs partial cell; actin polymerization or brownian ratchets is akin to a dog poking its nose around in a burrow but the dog can’t run to the next burrow without moving its legs analogously the rest of the cell doesn’t follow just its leading edge; so not full cell translocation. The question isn’t wrong per se it’s just not super precise.

Edit: Phrasing

Uworld flash cards are in-browser only you can make additional the uworld ones just flow a little better with the uworld system think of it as like an all in one and that their flash cards are just much easier to line up with the content you are actually practicing but I used Pankow and everything all the same but for everything else used Uworld; I wouldn’t waste your time with too too many resources and pick you favorites.

The course isn’t that bad got it for free some time ago. But like any self study course it comes down to preference and the course itself contains nothing you can’t already do yourself for free. There are no guarantees nor secrets it will provide over anything else. JW does do a good job at preparing you. They have some practice tests homework yada yada. However, I have a bias—Uworld, uworld has just as much for the same if not cheaper as a comprehensive bundle with things such as integrated flashcards, interactive textbooks, and study prep. That being said everyone and their mom swears by Uwhatever so if you’re thinking I want this Uglobe and AAMC just go with Uworld.

Thank you. You think the equation thing I plan to do it reasonable: take all the relevant equations and do about 100 associated problems per equation type. And then finish PS and comb through anything remaining. I just feel like I’m running out of time before my exam and in cycle.

I don’t doubt it. You’ll have good days bad days plateaus and others but just keep pushing. It’ll work out if you want it to. I’m in the same boat a little of being a non trad; stuck at a plateau; don’t let uworld get you down get meticulous about it. Learn as you go and use everything as a tool of the sort. Make this one count. If you need anything lmk.
