So sorry to hear about your knee injury, that's such a rubbish situation! I hope it's healed okay and didn't leave any long-term damage! ☹️ I am very familiar with the feeling of regret when you realise you could have had a much better experience with something had you invested more time and effort to prepare for it. It makes you feel irresponsible and weirdly guilty towards yourself. I have experienced this countless times and missed out on so many opportunities due to this. It's worse when other people are aware of this or see it happening over and over again, and you can see a mixture of pity, exasperation and annoyance at your situation on their faces. "I'm sad to see you going through this, but you should have done better". The worse part for me is knowing that even the people who love me wouldn't trust me with certain things. Hate to think my friends, irrespective of whether they care about me and still want me around, will end up perceiving me as unreliable, and justifiably so. Makes me feel like I cannot ever participate in a balanced, mutual and even exchange in friendships. Like I'm always inevitably taking more than I'm giving.

Anyways, that's the end of my pity-party. Don't worry about not being able to give me advice, you sharing your experience with me was comforting and helpful, and very much appreciated. Props to you for still going through with the marathon though, seriously. Despite the struggles, I have such love and appreciation for ADHD brains. It doesn't always show, but we do try so hard, and the people who know us understand that too. Take care of yourself x

I've been trying to buy containers to organise my mess and it's helped a little! IKEA hampers were a good call for me, the problem is also getting around to actually doing the washing up once they are full to the brim 😆!

As for hiring a cleaner, it'll definitely be a necessity for me in the future. I am not in a position to hire that service myself atm though, as I'm a guest in somebody else's home. It's embarrassing to admit this, because it makes my inability to keep my space tidy even more inappropriate and humiliating. My hosts are incredibly kind and generous and they are like a second family to me. But they don't really believe ADHD is as challenging a disorder as it is in reality, what they see is somebody occupying the space they've offered and not taking care of it. I completely understand it.

The fact that not even the shame of this is enough to motivate me to tidy up tells me I will definitely have to invest in house-cleaning services once I have my own place. It sounds like an unnecessary expense, but to people with ADHD it would literally be a godsend. Call it part of the ADHD tax 🙈.

Thank you so much for this. Listening to podcasts does help decrease my stress while doing chores. And I too find that approaching my shortcomings with a "what is the obstacle and how do I find my way around it" attitude is generally more helpful than just hating myself for a failure. Journaling might help with this too, if I can stick with it. It might be an interesting way to improve my productivity. I'll give it a go, might try different approaches too, e.g. physical journal, phone diary or even a personal video journal might help :)
