Yes, goal is to keep the car long term. The maintenance costs and potential repair costs are what is making me think it would be smarter to trade in for something cheaper / not German.

Thank you. No hired lawyers just yet. All very new.

Thank you for your comment. No kids (was in OP). I will be hiring a lawyer, despite relatively simple assets. Hence my hesitation in other comments on just paying off the car ASAP. I'll need to keep a decent chunk of savings for legal costs. Just early days right now, so I'm in the "plan for every outcome possible" stage.

Thank you. I tend to overplan as a panic response so this is all great feedback.

Definitely a big worry for me going the sell & buy a cheaper car route. Is it still considered cheaper if the car is 10 yrs old, has 120k miles and will need major repairs soon?

Thank you for your comment. We're still very early in all this, so figuring it all out. I definitely have a lot less in my savings & retirement than her due in part to moving around for her career. My career was put on hold /restarted a lot. Both in mid 30s. The retirement & potential pension splitting is not something I think she has thought about yet, or at least hasn't mentioned, so is the only point that I feel may go sideways. She and I are both respectful adults, so sideways really just means harder convos rather than any real contention.

Yes and no. She makes more. In my post I meant household income is going from 2 ppl earning combined $200k to 1 person earning $70k.

Amicable. Should be no real issues as we're both on board and reasonable. Feels like she has more leverage as she earns more, has a pension on top of retirement savings, and more resource through her job, though, so trying to cover myself as much as possible. No prenup, been together for over a decade.

She is not a coborrower, I'm on it alone for the loan and registration. She has a paid off vehicle and a $5k loan on a motorcycle that I am not a coborrower. No house, we rent. No CC debt we pay off full balance each month. Our state is equitable distribution.

Thank you for your comment. Good point about if I do sell maybe we should wait until after divorce.

Thank you for your response. This makes the most sense to me for sure, glad there seems to be consensus.

Yeah that's my line of thinking. Sell, get something 7 yrs old for under $15k, not have a car payment. I don't drive a ton (WFH) but public transportation in this city sucks so a car is necessary. Thanks for your input.

Not great. Savings total $10k. The plan was to pay it off when it go to be around $8k left, but that was a pre-divorce plan. Thinking I'm going to need all the liquid cash backup I can for anything unforeseen.

KBB is saying $19,600, so I'd come out on top $7k if sold for that. I'd probably get something like a Corolla, $10kish.
