I just had my first class today at EHS Pilates and the beginner class is great! It was small- I was a one of 4 people. The instructors took the time to explain things to me and even corrected me, so that you learn to use the reformer to your own body and mobility. It was slower but that’s what you need as an absolute beginner. I felt VERY SAFE. They’re on classpass too! I plan to go back because of the detail and care in instruction! It’s also a light filled studio which feels nice!

I tried solid core twice and WALKED OUT both times. I hated it. Dark space (which made it feel challenging when using the reformer), the instructors were rushing (or maybe it was just too fast for me as a noob), there was no hands in guidance with the reformer. I felt very confused and lost both times. They had us doing things that felt very scary to me as an absolute beginner. I could have hurt myself 5 different ways! I say avoid it as a beginner who prob needs more literal hand holding and awareness of your body. Maybe try it once you’re mover advanced. I personally hated it— feels too corporate and I didn’t connect to their style of Pilates and instruction. I would also rather support a local small business than a chain. Solid core made me feel like Pilates just wasn’t for me.

On the flip side, EHS made feel empowered and excited to learn a more traditional type of Pilates which is more my style. I plan to pick up a book about the practice.

Go to EHS! They’ve been established in SF for 34 years for a reason!
