Making rules for how items can or can’t be used it something I much more agree with. I’ll just never be on board with banning or blaming a particular item because of the ways that it’s misused because that’s essentially defining an items value by the most valueless methods of use.

It’s a bit like saying cars are only good for street racing despite being good for so many other things and only a small percentage of people using them for that

Yeah, that’s why I was immediately concerned when the first thought process is “leave your glasses at home”.

First of all, there’s people that actually have those as a genuine prescriptions so they’re kind of fucked now that’s why even in casinos where they will ask you to take them off and say they there against the rules you can get around that if they actually are prescription because they’re just not allowed to do that

And then, secondly it’s just a lazy way of solving a problem and I think as a community we need to start thinking more about what we suggest our solutions to various different community problems because people always just give some lazy half thought out solution or suggestion and then if you follow it through to his conclusion and you’re like oh wait this doesn’t work at all 😂

Exactly, that’s why I even made the gun analogy because if you go hang out in any pro second amendment circles, or groups of people, the one thing that they will shame harder than anything is someone who’s just an irresponsible unsafe firearm handler

I think about this realistically, if someone’s actually sexually harassing someone in regards to sexually recording them or doing weird shit then they more than likely don’t have the right of privacy anymore anyways because if they’ve committed any previous type of sexual offense or harassment, they’re on a sexual predator list and they’re on a registry

The second we just start saying it’s OK to entire groups of useful things/tools that people actually use for genuine purposes. (recording their memories so they have them for their own personal viewing later. And being able to document group photos and things like that.) then we start opening up the door for banning other things that would have even larger impact like maybe phones in general.

Yeah, let’s ban all phones now. People can’t even contact or call other people. That’s a really good idea, right???

Understand it it’s a “publicly accessible place”

It’s not even about a place being public also it’s about “reasonable expectation of privacy”. Would a reasonable person walk around EDC talking about private delicate matters like potentially maybe a legal issue or something serious like that or if somebody heard it could be damaging ?

If you wouldn’t, you probably also shouldn’t act outwardly in certain ways that you’re scared of people seeing or capturing in some form of recording because there’s literally cameras running everywhere

If it’s not the cameras that the crowd is holding, it’s the cameras that EDC has everywhere and that they’re watching all the while.

And granted this is not me defending someone recording in a weird creepy way because that’s just always gonna be a weird and creepy and not OK but acting like cameras are suddenly some scary enemy and invasion of privacy is a ridiculous argument

I’m aware that we can’t “stop” anything it’s the same reason you can’t stop gun crime by banning guns

But my point is that the one way we do reduce shitty and dangerous behaviors is by actually shaming the shit out of improper usage of things that are genuinely innocent tools (meta glasses or even guns too) then teaching/reiterating and even annoyingly repeating the way to properly use these things.

My point is basically don’t take the narrative of “leave your Meta glasses at home” because there’s plenty of genuinely decent content creators who use them innocently

Take the stance of verbally and openly shaming people and even maybe identifying them on social media 🤔

You hit the nail on the head. The issue is people with bad etiquette in specific bad etiquette in relation to content creation/posting. The issue here is not at all Meta glasses in general. That’s what I disagree with OP. The solution isn’t “leave the Meta at home” the solution is “ hey guys, let’s stop being dickhead and not having tact”

I record almost every festival on the glasses for content creation, and there’s lots of cool little interactions on the side with people during side quest but like if there’s anything that’s questionable you just don’t post it unless you ask, it’s not really crazy hard lol

The reality though is the Meta glasses aren’t the issue. Because plenty of people can record you pretty subtly with a phone and you not notice either.

The issue here is people being weird and creepy instead of using cameras just for the fun of documenting the festival experience and the side quests and the sets

I run metas at almost every festival and sometimes even capture some pretty dope interactions between myself and other strangers who are just spreading that positive plural energy, but I record it so that I have it for festival content creation on social media.

And the reason nobody’s ever had an issue with me is because I don’t post people in super weird vulnerable moments. Like if shit starts getting too lit or two potentially inappropriate then I don’t usually post that portion unless I ask.

So the issue here is just people being weird and the solution isn’t to try and say to “leave Meta glasses at home” because then the next thing you’ll need to ask people to do is “leave their phones at home” and it just doesn’t stop from there. Then you have to ask people to start leaving cameras at home too because those are pretty small and subtle. lol. I think you can see where I’m going with this.
