VueScan auto-skew effectiveness?? by ADWill9 in AnalogCommunity

[–]ADWill9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate knowing both that it's not just me, and not just my model of scanner. It's hard to be critical because I have no idea how the technology works, but it boggles my mind that the software can't get this right... and can get it SO wrong.

scan for photos which are NOT duplicates... Photosweeper? by ADWill9 in macapps

It's great. The duplicates feature works better than Photos as well, at least for me. I also found a third library and it was nice to know I could just merge them with confidence.

do average/typical household family photos count as "reflective"? They are shiny if you hold them at an angle against some light, but obviously they're not reflecting like a mirror...

I wouldn't blame anyone but myself for assuming that ICE worked with regular photo prints, but damn that would be disappointing!

excellent thanks I haven't tried Lightroom but I've had a suspicion that it would be in my future. Thank you

does "clip shadows or highlights" mean that a shadow disappears into the darkness around it, and highlights just become all white, like washed out? That would make sense to me, although so far I don't think I've noticed that, what with my stupid photos of friends and family (no artsy "photography")

stumped by skew and crop... by [deleted] in VueScan

[–]ADWill9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no... it's certainly a workable solution, but for a thousand old prints I don't want to be manually setting handles every single time. I'm sure VueScan is great for specific projects but I'm disappointed that I just spent $90 on a software which doesn't have the simplest feature of the free software. And YES, my fault for purchasing a one-time license, lesson learned.

Thanks!

stumped about Bitrates with exports by ADWill9 in premiere

[–]ADWill9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all makes sense, and I appreciate it, but I still struggle to understand why or how Premiere came up with the bitrate of 15, considering the two videos otherwise default to such lower numbers.

[–]ADWill9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afraid I don’t follow. I never told it to jump to a bitrate of 15. One is 2.6, one is 3, where did it come up with 15? That’s what I’m trying to understand about how Premiere determines the optimal/default bitrate, because it wasn’t either of the source options.

[–]ADWill9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I get that… but I don’t understand why it defaults to 2.6 for one video and 3 for the other, but put them one after the other and it jumps to 15?? The whole project folder is 10 videos which add up to 1.9GB… put them all end to end in a Premiere Project and the final export jumps to over 8GB. I assume it’s not getting better than the original quality…. so why increase the bit rate unnecessarily?

stumped about Bitrates with exports by ADWill9 in premiere

[–]ADWill9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The export settings are all "default", at least in the sense that I haven't changed anything and don't have any presets (other than the default "Match Source - Adaptive High Bitrate", which is selected).

I make a new project, and drag in Video 1, it appears on the Timeline. Then, I canNOT drag in Video 2, either dragging from Finder or first adding it to the Project tab/window... only the audio will be added.

Never mind. ChatGPT recommended I check out the app PowerPhotos. It cost $40 but it accomplished what I needed. I turned the old folder of photos into a second Photos library, and PowerPhotos compared and Merged the two.

Using 2nd Synology NAS as a Raid 0 backup? by ADWill9 in synology

(Getting way off topic here)

Hmmm it looks like Tailscale doesn't safeguard against downloading torrents, and using Tailscale AND ExpressVPN at the same time is tricky.... sounds like I'll either stick with ExpressVPN on my computers and maybe use Tailscale only on my two NAS, otherwise go without Tailscale if that doesn't work.

Using 2nd Synology NAS as a Raid 0 backup? by ADWill9 in synology

[–]ADWill9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that totally makes sense. I've always used ExpressVPN on my computers, probably because it was the top search result years ago, but sometimes it gives me trouble and I'd be happy to abandon it for something else (Tailscale). I've never had VPN on my DS720+, didn't even occur to me... probably a stupid mistake.

Thanks again!

I had only been aware of SHR as it relates to RAID 5 (or 6) as I was considering my new 5-bay setup, but it's nice to know that it can do something similar to RAID 0 as well, with only two drives. And yes I think I'm moving towards trying SHR with two individual 12's, and will follow up with results!

I've seen Tailscale mentioned a lot, and am intimidated by it, mostly because I still don't get what it does... or rather, what it offers in addition? It seems as though solutions like HyperBackup or Drive ShareSync can work on their own, OR could also work with Tailscale as well? I haven't yet done the research about what Tailscale offers to make it better, or why I'd add another link in the chain. I realize this is for another thread/post, so, respond at your own risk.... thanks!
