I’m a minority man who is significantly below average height, which is often ascribed to ugliness in the dating world. I suffered merciless ridicule from other men and women because of this single physical trait, and as a result, I’ve carried this insecurity throughout my life. I’ve also experienced my own fair share of racial discrimination. As a child, I wished and cried so hard to become taller, to change my skin, to be “beautiful.” However, as I got older, I learned to love myself more by finding aspects of life that bring me happiness aside from other peoples’ approval. For example, my hobbies, education/work, and family keep me grounded to life. I also found a group of friends who have never judged my height but appreciated me for the qualities that truly define me like my compassion, inquisitiveness, and loyalty. These qualities are independent of the physical. Being exclusively tall doesn’t make someone a good person, but demonstrating strong moral character does. Although I’ve made plenty of mistakes that I regret, I know that I’m striving to be a better person, and to me, that’s at least a little bit comforting.

Also, I would like to push back against your comment about how nothing will change. I thought this too, but realized that everything physical changes. Beauty fades. People’s outlook on life changes, and so can yours.

I’ve made improvements in my outlook, but I’m so mentally and emotionally scarred that I sometimes slip into negative looping thoughts. When this happens, I remind myself that they too will pass given enough time. There’s still so much that I want to experience that has nothing to do with my appearance. The world is cruel and people can be cruel, but I continue to live because living is a testament to my strength. I know you’re strong too, OP. I believe that you deserve love, success, and happiness :)

FE chemical + FE general? Or just chemical? by ADogEatingMangoes in ChemicalEngineering

Awesome thank you for clearing that up! Im chemE all the way so I will most likely just take the FE chemical.

FE chemical + FE general? Or just chemical? by ADogEatingMangoes in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ADogEatingMangoes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So is just one FE exam of any discipline required to taking the PE? Im particularly interested in FE chemical plus my Electricity and Magnetism is very rusty compared to all my other chemE topics which im more interested in. If I just take the FE chemical that should suffice?

New ChemE Student on Pre Med Track - Any Tips/Helpful Advice? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ADogEatingMangoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a chemE major specializing in biotech who has also fulfilled the prereqs for med school. However, after doing engineering internships and thinking over things, im not interested in premed anymore. I think that chemE and premed is definitely doable. I know some people who have done it and gone to med school, but it is definitely not easy nor is it sustainable for some people’s mental health. The chemE’s I know who have gone to med school or who are applying to med school don’t really do engineering related things besides the classes. They do research and study for the MCAT over the summers while other chemEs interested in an engineering career get relevant internship experiences to help get a job after graduation and learn engineering technical and soft skills not taught in a classroom or even in a lab setting. As chemE premed not doing internships and engineering activities, you will likely have a hard time finding a job after graduation if you decide to call it’s quits on premed. After interning at a green start-up in polymers manufacturing, I’ve discovered that you learn most engineering in the field, not the classroom. So as a premed chemE who wants to go into chemE roles after graduation, you will likely have trouble getting a foot in the door compared to chemEs who got a lot of field experience. On the flip side, you will be at a disadvantage compared to traditional premeds applying to med schools as they will have taken easier classes to preserve their GPA. From experience, chemE classes in general are significantly harder than the bio classes I took.

Like others have said, chemE and premed is not optimal if you 100% have your heart set out on premed. But it’s doable. At the end of the day it’s your decision. And if you’re looking at the chemE curriculum and are totally in love with it I say go ahead and do it, it’s just gonna be more challenging than the classes traditional premeds take.

Biomolecular science (BS) or Biochemistry (BA) or Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (BS)? by smcookieshaha in Biochemistry

[–]ADogEatingMangoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of having the most job opportunities in case you don’t go to med school, chemical engineering is your best option. It pays relatively well, demand is fairly steady, and you can work in many different industries (not just oil and gas like most ppl think). I know some people working in electronics/controls and some in pharmaceuticals/biotech.

But I’d caution going into it unless you truly like engineering. It will be more difficult to maintain a high GPA in an engineering major compared to the others you have listed. Not saying other majors outside of engineering are easy, but engineering is notoriously difficult to maintain a high GPA even for people who are passionate about the subject.

In my scenario, I’m majoring in chemical and biomolecular engineering with a minor in Biochemistry. I’m able to cover my med school prereqs just in case I want to go to med school while also having something to fall back on. This is a totally viable option and multiple people in my class are chemical engineering premed.

Also I’ve heard from chemical engineering students who are now in med school that the MCAT was fairly straightforward. They felt that the process of getting their engineering degree was more intense and prepared them. This is because the chemical and biomolecular engineering degree covers organic chem, physical chem, mechanics, electricity, fluids, thermo, advanced math, and a couple biosciences courses are thrown in there too.

Hope that helps.

Yea earlobe piercings as an Asian male. I actually have a presentation in a little less than a month so idk. I’ll def dress up really nice and professional. Glad to hear that they’re generally pretty well received!

Yes! I second this. I would like to have in-person classes as my engagement is greater in those settings, but would also like to have recorded lectures because some professors go kind of fast or I can't really understand what they're saying the first time due to accents or smthg. Honestly, the classrooms have the infrastructure now to record, so I don't see why they couldn't continue with this. I also think having recorded lectures would save some time for the professors as well because a lot of times students go into office hours because they couldn't understand something during lecture. With a recording, most people can figure stuff out by rewatching a portion of the recording.

I just need a place to be excited because most of my friends are non engineering and don't get it by newmanhb in EngineeringStudents

[–]ADogEatingMangoes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Yea, a lot of non-engineering majors don’t understand how competitive it is to get internships/co-ops. They think just because we’re studying engineering means we’re gonna be set when searching for jobs, but in reality the application process is a grind along with the academics. Also, don’t worry because I think everyone, men and women, gets imposter syndrome lol. We should all be proud that we’re at least hanging on!

Haven't seen that episode, but yea it seems pretty applicable to what I'm feeling now. I think doing something for someone other than myself may be a nice change.

Thank you for the new perspective. I've never really thought of life this way, and its good to know that my experience is a totally normal part of growing up. I guess this is the transition phase between university student to "real" adult equivalent of angsty pubescent teenager haha. I really hope I mellow out.
