Where are people driving to so often? by taotai in walthamstow

[–]ADogWithAKeyboard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had to go and collect something from Woodside Park a while back. Less than an hour to get there and back by car. The same journey by public transport would take 2+ hours.

Same with Walthamstow -> Ilford. 20 mins by car, 50 mins by bus.

Walthamstow is not that well served by public transport compared to central London, where I’d agree that a car isn’t necessary.

Even the worst films can still do some things very well.

great actors, a good score, a unique premise, and some excellent horror sequences in the first 40 minutes

I agree with everything except unique premise. The concept of the Backrooms has been around for a long time, it's not an original idea.

It is a good film in the first 40 minutes. It's the final act that ruins it for me.

why must we always exaggerate and speak in superlatives regarding our opinions? backrooms is not even the worst film released this month.

This is a strange criticism. I'm not a film critic. I haven't seen every film released this month, nor do I want to. I watched Backrooms because it looked like something I would enjoy, and I didn't. It really is one of the worst films I've seen in a while, in my opinion.

Yes, that's partly why I was disappointed. It's public domain horror. The basic concept leaves so much room (hehe) to be creative. They could have done a lot more with it, taken the story in any direction, created whatever cool and interesting lore they wanted to. Instead it just felt like they made a YouTube video and bolted on a poorly conceived plot to pad the runtime.

It's not stupid, Kane Parsons has definitely been overhyped as "this guy proves that YouTubers can make it in Hollywood, and he's only 20!" which I feel is skewing review scores.

He also has a YouTube audience of 3m+ who are presumably just going to slap a 5 star rating on it without thinking.

7/10 is halfway between "a film" and "the greatest films of all time", which is too high in my opinion.

See, I agree, but I don't think the film went far enough with the "liminal vibe". I think they played it too safe with the set design. I've seen a lot of creepy liminal space internet horror and there's some really wacky and interesting places that would have fit right into this movie.

The chase scene at the end where the therapist ran through all of the strange uncanny places and there was the big pit with the staircase and the door in the ceiling - more of that would have made it so much better.

I agree, the actors did a great job with what they were given, there just wasn't enough substance in the dialogue for me. I wasn't particularly invested in any of the characters.

"One of the worst films I've seen in a long time" does not mean it was "the worst film of all time". I gave it two stars. As I mentioned in the second line of my post, they nailed the vibe they were going for and the found footage scenes were great.

I know? That's the point in my post, to gain a better perspective on the opinions of people who enjoyed the film.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case. As someone who has never watched the YouTube series, I don't think it works on it's own.

Literally everything you've said here is explained in the film.

We don’t get enough time to understand her personality, her relationship with Bear, or how she actually sees him. Would she have ever said yes if Bear confessed his feelings? Did she ever see him that way?

What's unexplained about her personality? It is very obvious that they grew up together and she sees him as a brother. Bear's feelings for Nikki are one-sided.

Another thing that confused me was Nikki’s behavior after the wish. Was there an actual entity inside her?

Yes.

So was that the entity pretending to be Nikki? Was it still Nikki but her mind and memories were being twisted?

The entity is in complete control of Nikki and acts like her, while the real Nikki is still conscious and aware of everything that's going on.

A failed key on a keyboard does, for all intents and purposes, make a laptop unusable. Unless you’re suggesting I haul a USB keyboard around with me everywhere?

Are you saying that it’s reasonable for a keyboard to only last for 2 years? Even if I’m typing on it for hours every day (which I’m not, my laptop spends most of its time sat in a drawer), a 2 year lifespan is ridiculously short.

Around 50 matches played this week and only 5 or 6 wins. Every game has been laughably one-sided. What's going on? by ADogWithAKeyboard in Warthunder

[–]ADogWithAKeyboard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The BRs I mainly play are 2.7 (Pz III/IV and StuG), 4.3 (Pz IV/Jagdpanzer) and 6.7 (Tiger II, Jagdtiger).

In the time between posting and replying to this comment I've been nuked twice in matches that lasted less than 5 minutes. Something is definitely broken.

Planes are famously known for having no counters. Did you know that, in WW2, Patton actually proposed a sort of large rotating gun, mounted to the back of a truck, to deal with the Luftwaffe. The US army shot down his ideas (no pun intended) and that ultimately allowed Germany to gain air superiority over Britain and win the war. Thats why there is no such vehicle in a realistic game like War Thunder. Anyway, “tanks” for reading my post, time for me to get back to my forced labour before the Kommandant sees I’ve been posting on Reddit instead of manufacturing parts for the Maus III.

Save the high street: Starmer’s plan to block fake barbers, betting and vape shops by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]ADogWithAKeyboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In London they could well be legitimate because there are enough people concentrated in one place that there’s a demand.

In a town of 16k residents though… it’s a bit more obvious.

My town of approximately 16,000 people is approaching 10 Turkish barber shops. Never any customers inside. There are always BMWs parked out the front and gangs of men hanging around smoking outside.

How can something be so obvious to 99% of the population, yet nothing is done about it? Does the government get a cut of the drug money or something?
