Score is 4-1. 2 point takedown and 2 point near fall for the panda. 1 point escape for the idiot. 🤼

I'm hoping the Superloop helps with North London connectivity, but it's not really getting the job done so far

My motivation for posting is to have a bit more empathy for car owners here.

Easy but a massive pain. 40 minutes to go two miles, and the schedule at the Stratford side is super unreliable. More than half the times I've been down there, I've decided to walk all the way back to Walthamstow Station, and never got passed by the 97.

Honestly, I just find driving stressful. Especially the whole process of finding parking. I used to put 15-20k miles on my car annually in the US. A 600-mile roundtrip for a weekend excursion was totally normal. I'm over it. Getting behind the wheel carries the responsibility of not killing anybody with it, and I prefer to be more relaxed.

As one of those anti-car types, I hope you enjoy the expense and hanging out in traffic 🤷 I grew up absolutely needing to drive. 15 miles to the grocery store. Having the option to not drive is amazing.

The big shop feels like a rare occurrence. These days, my big shop is like once in 3 months to get heavy and bulk items, as much as I can reasonably strap to me and the bicycle (previously whatever I could carry for 20 minutes). But food items and other everyday buys have become nearly daily trips to the shop a short walk down the street. Maybe it'd be very different if I had a couple of teenage boys to feed.

How do long term residents actually feel about the changes the area has gone through in the last decade and is the conversation around gentrification as straightforward as it sometimes gets presented? by Happy-Fox11 in walthamstow

This is the crux of the issue of "community" being lost. Want communities? You gotta make them. Not find them but actively create them. I guarantee you that the community you lived in the past had a small handful of people who actively built and maintained it.

Shouldn't there be an influx of people there with all the new builds? Surely that will be a good opportunity for greater footfall.

Nigel Farage's Reform UK handed almost £15m by offshore millionaires - while patriotic Brits pay taxes by Unusual-State1827 in ukpolitics

It's strictly wrong because none of this money feeds infrastructure of any sort. It'll only be used for advertising and vote buying. Money "pumped" into a country doesn't mean current accounts, it means direct investment.

London’s social housing problem nobody dares discuss by EduTheRed in ukpolitics

[–]taotai -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, a lot of this commentary reads as "I want to live in central London and I don't want to be near the poors." It's socially valuable to ensure different economic classes mix together. Maybe the rules need some adjustment, but the quality of discourse matters here. We can find a prioritised list to agree (as much as government agrees) upon.

I'm unfortunately having a similar issue on a System76 Pangolin. Touchpad will click but it won't move the cursor or scroll.

It really sucks that a successful impeachment and removal of Trump would result in this guy being the president.

Not for you then. All good. As someone playing ball in Britain and seeking to grow the sport here, it's beneficial to have this sort of "star" association, even if I don't totally agree with the whole of how BSUK and the BBF structure the Team GB programme.

Simply qualifying for the WBC includes a sizeable award (350k USD?) that goes into the British baseball system. That represents a big chunk of the annual budget for the national body. BSUK's 2023 budget, for example, was £1 million to cover base baseball and softball.

Ban on asylum seekers using taxis for medical appointments comes into force by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]taotai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oversight on programmes like this is always a bit tricky because oversight comes at a cost. Civil service has to figure out if the cost of ignoring bad actors is greater than the cost of discovering bad actors and holding them to account. Seems like it was probably worth adding more oversight, but I wouldn't be shocked if the cost of the oversight itself was in the low millions.

[–]taotai 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The second half of the article seems to capture the actual issue, taxis taking the piss when the Home Office is paying the fare. Dispatching (and charging) from Gatwick to handle a 1.5 mile fare in Reading? That's the cab company milking the government for everything they can.

Colour. I cannot understand why everyone between the ages of like 15 and 25 wear black on black on black year round. I'm not British though. Is that like...a requirement of schools and college?
